LACTOSE INTOLERANCELactose mal absorption is one of the common disorders found in children. A study showed that
Indonesia is one of the Asian country in which 6% - 10% of its adults have this disorder.
What Is Lactose Intolerance?Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest and absorblactose (the sugar in milk) that results in gastrointestinal
symptoms when milk or food products containing milk
are consumed. Lactose is a large sugar molecule that is
made up of two smaller sugars, glucose and galactose.
The glucose and galactose are then absorbed by the cells
lining the small intestine. The enzyme that splits lactose
into glucose and galactose is called lactase, and it is
located on the surface of the cells lining the small
intestine.
What Causes Lactose Intolerance?Unfunction of lactases roleLactose intolerance can be caused by reduced or absent
activity of lactase that prevents the splitting of lactose
(lactase deficiency).
Person habits who is not consume milk and its productfor a long period and its carrying until adultLactase deficiency develops over time and begins after
about age 2 when the body begins to produce less
lactase. Most children who have lactase deficiency do
not experience symptoms of lactose intolerance until
adolescence or adulthood.
Genetics FactorResearchers have identified a possible
genetic link to primary lactase
deficiency. Some people inherit a gene
from their parents that makes it likely they will
primary lactase deficiency. This discovery may be
useful in developing future genetic tests to identifypeople at risk for lactose intolerance.
Intestine DiseaseLactase deficiency results from injury to the small
intestine that occurs with severe diarrheal illness,
disease, Crohn's disease, or chemotherapy. This type
lactase deficiency can occur at any age but is more
common in infancy.
Case HistoriesSusan Age 18Susan has the strangest case oflactose intolerance yet. If she eatseven a spoonful of low-fat pudding herstomach begins to gurgle and she will
have some flatulence. With one cookie she will has gas, bloating, cramping, and nausea. If she has even a small amount ofcheese or something else dairy that's more than thesize of a cookie she will be on the ground, in the fetalposition, clutching her stomach, with gas, nausea, sweating, tremendous pain, and sometimes vomiting.Usually her symptoms occur within 15-20 minutes ofeating something with dairy in it, and can last for 8 or
more hours. After she controlled her condition, nutritionist recommended her to consume foodcontaining milk and dairy product slowly. Thereforeit wont cause
gastrointestinal disorder.
Lactose Free Diet - Foods to
Avoid
The following foods contain the
same amount of lactose as half
a cup of milk: Condensed milk (2
tablespoons)
Evaporated milk (1/4cup)
Processed cheese (85 g) Sour cream (1/2 cup)Yogurt (1/2 cup) Ice Cream (1/2 cup)
These foods contain small amounts of
lactose, and can be tolerated by most
people: Butter Cottage cheese Cream cheese Cheese (cheddar, Swiss, etc.)

What Are The Symptoms Of Lactose Intolerance? The common primary symptoms of lactose
intolerance are gastrointestinal include:
Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, and Flatulence (passing gas).
Less common symptoms of lactose intoleranceinclude:
Abdominal bloating, Abdominal distention, and Nausea.
1. Drink lactose-free milk productsReplace cow's milk with a lactose-free
product.
2. Research the lactose content in yourfavorite dairy products
If you're going to have a dairy
product, limit yourself to foods
with less than 12 g of lactose
per serving as a starting point tohelp control symptoms.
3. Use supplements with active enzymesto relieve discomfortResearchers found that many of the
supplements on the market were
useful in reducing discomfort while
others weren't as effective.
4. Be aware of lactose in surprising foodsWhile it's well-known that milk
products like yogurt and cheese
contain lactose, there are many
other foods that contain lactose. Inaddition to baked goods, pastries,
and waffle and bread mixes.
Lactose can also be found in potato chips, soups,
processed meats, candies, and veggies like rhubarb
and spinach
Unfortunately, these symptoms
be caused by several
conditions or diseases, so the
presence of these symptoms is not
very good at predicting whether a
person has
lactase deficiency or lactose intolerance.
How Is Lactose Intolerance Treated? The most obvious means of treating lactoseintolerance is by reducing the amount of lactosethe diet. Fortunately, most people who are lactose
intolerant can tolerate small or even moderate
amounts of lactose. It often takes only elimination
of the major milk-containing products to obtain
sufficient relief from their symptoms.
Thus, it may beto eliminate only milk,
yogurt, cottage cheese,
and ice cream. We may
changes milk and dairy
product with soya milkand another food that
be made from soya milk
like ice cream.
