Elevast™ performance and processing benefits may include: • Enhanced compression and tension set and durability, particularly for technical
applications requiring a broad service temperature range • Tighter cure for enhanced mechanical properties • Improved surface appearance • Ability to eliminate blooming, bleeding, fogging and iridescence • Improved low- and high-temperature performance • Significantly low compression and tension set performance • Retention of hardness and better feel • Improved flow characteristics for reduced processing time and energy requirements • Improved dispersion and mixing • Ability to process high Mooney-viscosity materials and highly filled compounds • Minimal impact on optical properties, crystallization behavior • Easily incorporated
Polymer modifiers C, E and R seriesElevast™ C, E and R series are novel specialty hydrocarbon fluids engineered to enhance polyolefin elastomers and compounds based on them. Elevast™ polymer modifiers are very pure, carefully tailored hydrocarbon fluids that efficiently upgrade key performance attributes and processing characteristics. They are also synergistic with other ingredients commonly used in elastomer compounds.
Enhanced low- and high-temperature performance, low compression and tension set, and improved initial and aged mechanical properties — while reducing Mooney viscosity — can be achieved. As a result, Elevast™ polymer modifiers deliver a unique balance of properties that may enable innovative solutions for a wide variety of applications and processes.
ExxonMobil Chemical’s Elevast™ polymer modifiers enhance the performance and processability of EPDM and polyolefin-based elastomers. These novel plasticizers can add value by allowing the reduction of expensive ingredients such as accelera-tors, coagents or curing agents, and by extending performance over a broader service temperature range. With Elevast™, formulators gain opportunities to fine-tune perfor-mance and develop new innovative solutions.
Elevast™ C, E and R series product features include: • Exceptionally low glass-transition temperature for extending low-temperature
service range with exceptionally low compression and tension set • Near-zero volatility for high permanence and long-term stability, resulting in
retention of mechanical properties — thus extending the service life of parts • High transparency, with exceptionally low color and odor • High purity with no aromatic, naphthenic, halogen-containing or polar components • Outstanding thermal and oxidation stability • Low specific gravity • Expanding food contact clearances
Grade SelectionElevast™ C, E and R series come in a wide range of molecular weights. Selection of the optimum Elevast™ grade will depend on a number of criteria, including polymer, perfor-mance targets, service-temperature windows and product-life requirements. Preferred loading levels will depend on the polymer system and application requirements. Contact ExxonMobil Chemical or our distributors for more information on specific applications.
Some considerations for choosing which Elevast™ grade is best for your application: • Molecular weight influences the ability of Elevast™ to enhance processability and
properties. In general, lower-molecular-weight grades are available for extremely cold temperature performance. Polymer processing conditions and application service temperatures will help determine the optimum molecular weight of Elevast™ for each application. Higher-molecular-weight grades are available for higher service temperatures.
• The compatibility of Elevast™ with a given polymer depends on molecular weight, polymer morphology and polymer type. Elevast™ C, E and R series polymer modifiers are purely paraffinic, and therefore are highly compatible with a variety of polyolefin poly-mers. In general, lower-molecular-weight grades provide better compatibility and can be added at higher levels than higher-molecular-weight versions.
• Elevast™ is readily incorporated and homogenized into polymers using conventional compounding equipment, with no special mixing required. The amount of Elevast™ that can be incorporated will depend on formulation details (e.g., level / type of fillers). Blends of Elevast™ have been demonstrated to deliver unique advantages. Preferred Elevast™ loading levels will depend on application requirements.
