WHAT IS BLOCKCHAIN?

Blockchain is a peer-to-peer distributed ledger technology for a new generation of transactional applications that establishes

trust and transparency, while streamlining business processes. It has the potential to

vastly reduce the cost and complexity of our current ways of doing things.

Blockchains have been called the ‘internet of value’ because they enable the seamless

exchange of value.

KEY FEATURES

• Distributed ledger of transactions that occur between participants or

peers of a network

• Maintained by the network nodes who ensure that there is no central

point of failure

• Transactions are intermediary-less; allowing for cost and timing

savings

• Transactions are validated or verified via a consensus algorithm

• Transactions are grouped in blocks which are added sequentially to a

chain and are encrypted to keep them secret

• Transactions are ‘hashed’ meaning they are given a unique identifier

which allows them to accessed at any time by the parties who have

the key to ‘unlock’ that transaction

• Blockchain is an enabling technology; when combined with smart

contracts, it is being used across a large number of industries
