DESCRIPTION

BrihadAranyaka Upanishad is considered by several scholars to be one of the oldest Upanishads together with Chandogya. Consequently, it aims to synthesize the ancient ritualistic religion with more philosophical currents. The book itself opens with verses from the Krishna Yajur Veda, giving an extensive metaphorical exegesis of the famous Vedic Ashvamedha, the Horse Sacrifice, giving symbolic correspondence between parts of the horse and that of the cosmos, unifying the macrocosm and microcosm within the single framework of the Ashvamedha sacrifice. One of the greatest Mahavakyas, Aham Brahmasmi (meaning, 'I am Brahman') occurs in this Upanishad. Presented here with an authentic translation of Sri Bhagavadpada Sankaracharya's bliss-yielding commentary.
