All the Activities! Programs return after expansion hiatus
Library staff are pleased to announce the
return of many popular programs which we
had to put on hold during the expansion and
construction work last year. They aren’t all at
the same times they were last year, so keep in
mind the dates.
Get Caught Reading
March
Take a photo of yourself, a
loved one, or even a pet
reading! Submit them in a
contest judged by library
staff.
Art in Bloom
April
Our annual fund-raiser for
summer reading programs
will resume, with local
artists painting flowerpots
which will be then
auctioned off to the public. Previous year’s
efforts had raised up to $1,200 each auction.
LEGO Contest
May
Children of all ages are
invited to submit LEGO
creations which local
artists and engineers
judge. Prizes are awarded
to winners, and
certificates to all
participants, plus we’ll
have ice cream sundaes
for all.
Don’t forget—Summer Reading
starts in June for all ages!
Grown-Ups Only!
We’re starting a new
program just for adults, with
a kick-off the evening of
Friday, Feb. 24. There will
be snacks, beverages, a
scavenger hunt, and more.
Everyone over age 21 is
welcome. We’ll plan some
more evenings throughout the year, with various
activities. Please stop in or call us at 684-5546 to
reserve your spot. See you soon!
Rare map finds a home at the library
The library was recently gifted an 1885 map of
Wyoming, printed by G.L. Holt of Cheyenne. Mary
(Holt) Hastings, 102, of Bedford, Mass., will soon
move into an assisted living facility and wanted the
map to come back to her “home” of Buffalo. She is
the aunt of Ray Holt. The counties depicted on the
map are Uinta, Fremont, Sweetwater, Carbon,
Albany, Laramie, Crook, and Johnson. The map will
hang on the south wall of the library.
Thank you to The Harry & Thelma Surrena Memorial

library programming, and much more...

Our next book discussion
is on Whistling Past the
Graveyard, by Susan
Crandall, at 7 p.m. Monday,
March 6.
The Winter Reading
program, entitled “Catch a
Dragon by the Tale,”
concluded on Tuesday, Jan.
31. The winners of prize
baskets for the five age
groups were as follows:
Preschool-K: Cordelia Cash
1st to 3rd grade: Miranda Ford
4th & 5th grade: Franklin Ford
Teens: Maily Potter
Adults: Charlotte Heinle
Our adult participation was so great—four times the
next largest age group—that we chose two other
winners to receive coffee cards. They are Joan
Buckingham and Krisynda Austin. Congratulations
to all the participants!
Johnson County Library Foundation The foundation was created in 1976 by patrons who saw
the need to ensure the future of the library. Through
donations, memorials and fund-raising, these volunteers
have successfully supported special needs of the library

Did You Know? Librarian Connie Norton
oversees outreach by taking hundreds of
paperback novels to local hotels, campgrounds,
and other locations. Over the last year, Connie
took 1,900 paperback books to the various
locations. Our patrons took home another 1,900
from the library. If you have a place in mind
you’d like to add to the list, please contact her at
(307) 684-5546.
Quilt Show Begins in late February
The library is again preparing for its annual quilt show. Participants in the
2017 National Quilting Display may drop off their quilts at the library on
Friday and Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Quilts will be on display
at the library through the month of March, beginning the next week.
Every show sees more and more amazing creations arrive. Last year we had
36 quilts on display, plus the Wyoming State Quilt which will be raffled off.
Tickets for the statewide raffle may be purchased at the library.
Sponsored by the Buffalo Quilting Gals and the National Quilting
Association.

librarian
It is February in the Big
Horn Mountains and we can
thankfully depend on the
WYDOT snow plows to clear
Hwy. 16 over to Ten Sleep.
Here in this
photo taken in 1924, we see a
group of men using their own
personal shovels to clear
snow from the pass over the
mountain. It does look like
they are having a good time sharing the labor. Word has it that men from
Buffalo and Ten Sleep would start shoveling to clear the road until they met
each other somewhere on the mountain.
