BLOGGING & PHOTOSHOP
By Wiley Olmsted
OVERVIEW
We have learned some basics of utilizing two
communication tools in Communication Technology
so far; blogging and Adobe Photoshop.
The following are some of the things I’ve learned,
what I’ve liked, tools I’ve found useful and how I
hope to improve my skills using each in the future.
BLOGGING
My new blog is the second one I have worked on. The first
I wrote in 2010 for a Multimedia Journalism class.
The first blog featured a wide range of my interests. It was
called Wiley’s World; featured music analysis, video game
impressions and thoughts on living in my first apartment.
New Blog is focused on video games. Having a specific
subject has helped narrow down my target audience and
allowed more in depth coverage.
DO I LIKE BLOGGING?
Blogging is a modern communication tool that makes it possible
for anyone to share their thoughts and views to a wide audience.
Before the advent of the internet, having your voice heard by a
wide audience was far more difficult.
I enjoy the freedom available on subject matter and content.
The main problem with blogging is that there is so much
content out there, making your intended audience feel a need to
read your material is a real challenge.
I went for black
background with white
text for my blog.
It doesn’t distract the
reader.
Brings content to the
forefront.
DESIGN DECISIONS
Easy to read and
navigate is a must.
Target audience
(gamers) don’t usually
enjoy websites with
clutter and irrelevant
content, so a minimalist
design made sense.
PHOTOSHOP IMPRESSIONS
I have wanted to learn Photoshop for a long time.
As a total novice to the program who is still very
much a beginner; I feel quite overwhelmed with the
available options and how to navigate through them.
I have enjoyed my experience, but feel far from
comfortable at this stage.
PHOTOSHOP TOOLS
I am also taking Introduction to Photography this semester.
After taking hundreds of photos, many of which I thought were
great; it turns our many were very overexposed!
Photoshop allows you to create a new “Layer” for photos, a
Levels Adjustment layer was one way to make the photos look
better.
Clicking “Auto” often creates great results; but sometimes
adjusting levels manually gives you what you’re really looking for.
PHOTOSHOP EXAMPLE
Overexposed Correction
I would like to improve as
a writer and find a unique
voice and spin to make my
subject engaging.
Improve on taking my
opinions and putting them
into cohesive words.
How to effectively edit
overexposed and
underexposed images.
Adding fun effects to
images and learning how to
combine images well to
create humorous memes.
