Air Slate Defined:

Air Slates are interactive tools used in the classroom that allow teachers and students to have control of the computer/projector screen without using a mouse.

They are blank “slates” that utilize an electronic pen to write/draw on projection screens in the classroom.

How do teachers use the Air Slate? Teachers use it as a tool to free them

from the computer and projector area of room.

Slates allow teachers freedom to teach and simultaneously stand by students as they work.

Teachers use slates to work “hands free” in order to utilize more visual aids/ manipulatives.

How can students use Air Slates? Students can answer questions on the

screen when using the slate.

Students visually share their responses as they work on the slate.

Students with slates are allowed to interact easily with class members.

What are best classroom practices for when a student is using the Air Slate?

Student who are not using the slate work on individual white boards, construction paper, in groups, with manipulatives, etc.

Other students who are waiting for their turn must be engaged in other ways.

What are best practices for teachers using an Air Slate?

Teachers should have a back up plan in case the slate malfunctions

Teachers need to have a participation system to ensure all students access the slate during a class day.

A plan for increase of student response time when writing on the slate should be in place.
