Joys and concerns
ALL are welcome here.We believe every person is of sacred worth and created in God’s image. We commit to Jesus’ example of inclusive love, care, and intentional hospitality with persons of every race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital sta-tus, faith story, physical or mental ability, economic status, or politi-cal perspective. We respect our di-versity of opinion and expressions of faith. Therefore, as God loves us, so let us love and serve in the name of Christ.

ESL class tradition continues online
Since the coronavirus pan-demic halted in-person English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Belmont, dozens of students have continued to work on verb tenses, cultural traditions, and pronunciation lessons through virtual classes via Zoom. The digital sessions are no substitute for the camaraderie of the Tuesday/Thursday class-
es previously held in Belmont’s education wing. But there have been advantages. Mary Jane Duke, who is teaching Level 2 classes, says one of her students has logged in from Brazil, while another student and new mother has arranged naptime with class time. Level 2 and 5 classes, taught by Dick Bowers and Jane Du-
ESL class tradition continues onlineContinued from page 1Bose, continue in January after a holiday break. Keeping these classes going maintains a more than 50-year tradition of ESL instruction at Belmont. Volunteers also have con-ducted separate conversation groups online with students. As the classes have progressed, students and teachers have not only shared language, but also technology lessons. Anyone interested in learning more about Belmont UMC’s ESL program can contact director Charlie Hewgley at ESLinfo@belmont.org.

In our music, notes connect to other notes, measures to measures, and soon a complete piece of music is created! In our lives, music brings back memories, brings people closer together, and without a doubt, is an invisible thread that connects us to God. All children are invited to connect with the Children’s Music Ministry. Infants and preschoolers can connect through Parent and Child Music via Zoom on Friday mornings at 10:00am. Children ages 3, 4, and 5, 1st and 2nd graders, and 3rd-6th graders can connect through children’s choirs, beginning Wednesday, January 13, from 6:30-7:00pm via Zoom. We offer three separate children’s choir gatherings. Musical connections will be explored through crafts, drama, scripture, songs, and games. Please join us and invite a friend! For more information, please contact Amy Cooper, Children’s Music Director (amy@belmontumc.org).

Music Connects
Belmont UMC’s Encore Ministries se-ries will resume this week on Wednes-day, January 13, at 5:00pm via Zoom. Our three gatherings in January will be light-hearted sessions to open the new year. Later, we will touch on some weightier topics such as the CO-VID-19 vaccines and other topics on senior health. Make plans to join us for these ses-sions: Wednesday, January 13 - Name That Show Tune, led by Mike Fitzpat-rick at 5:00pm; Wednesday, January 20 - Backyard Bird Watching, led by Herb and Sue Mather at 5:00pm; Wednes-day, January 27 - Name That Hymn, led by Gayle Sullivan at 5:00pm. An email with the Zoom link will be sent out to those on the Encore mailing list each week prior to the Wednesday class. If you do not already receive En-core emails and would like to be add-ed to the list for a specific class or all Encore emails, contact Jim Robinson (Jim.Robinson@TNUMC.com).

Belmont UMC’s Children’s Music Ministry has persevered through the pandemic by teachers maintaining virtual contact with children and families through choir rehearsals and Par-ent and Child Music. In addition, they have offered musical moments in person, outside at children’s homes.
