•What is the Teacher Toolbox?

SWIMMING THROUGH THE COMMON CORE2013-2014

SCHOOL YEAR

OBJECTIVES:

• I will be able to locate and unpack CCSS resources.

• I will be able to develop a plan of implementation of the CCSS in my classroom.

WHAT IS COMMON CORE?

CCSS are a consistent and clear understanding of what students are to learn.

45 states have adopted these new standards.

All students are now on the same level playing field.

WHAT CONTENT AREAS ARE EFFECTED?

Math and ELA will follow the CCSS. Science and

Social Studies will incorporate certain CCSS into their existing curriculum.

RF for Kindergartner:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.a. Follow words from left to

right, top to bottom, and page by page.

b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.

c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.

d. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

1. Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

a. Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0. For example, a hydrogen atom has 0 charge because its two constituents are oppositely charged.

2. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.

a. Understand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as (–1)(–1) = 1 and the rules for multiplying signed numbers. Interpret products of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.3. Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational

numbers. Computations with rational numbers extend the rules for manipulating fractions to complex fractions.

CCSS MAIN FOCUS

The Math and ELA standards are focusing on rigorous shifts.

ELA shifts: • Building

knowledge through content rich nonfiction

• Evidence from text

• Complex Text and Academic Language

Math shifts: • Focus skills and

standards• Coherence-think

and link• Rigor-conceptual

understanding and fluency

• Application

WHAT’S YOUR NEXT STEPS?• I hope that some light bulbs

came on for you today and that you have a better understanding of CCSS.

• What steps are you going to take now to help implement CCSS in your classroom?

• List three things that you are going to do to help implement CCSS in your classroom.
