Annual work plan 2017
• Organised not per type of action but
around 4 STRATEGIC ORIENTATIONS:1. Fostering a sustainable biomass-feedstock supply to
feed both existing and new value chains (3 topics: R1,
D1, D2)
2. Optimising efficient processing for integrated
biorefineries (3 topics: R2, R3, F1)
3. Developing innovative bio-based products for specific
market applications (8 topics:R4, R5, R6, R7, D3, D4,
D5, F2)
4. Creating and accelerating the market uptake of bio-
based products and applications (2 topics: S1, S2)8
7 RIA topics in Call 2017
Objective: Filling specific gaps in the value chain
by validating a technology, process or materials/product at TRLs 4/5
- BBI JU Budget: € 36 million // Grant: € 2-5 million per proposal
Feedstock Valorisation of gaseous side streams (R1)
Processing Pre-treatment and separation of lignocellulosic feedstock (R2), Extremophiles & extremozymes for processing (R3)
Products Proteins and other bioactive ingredients (R4)Novel bio-based chemical precursors (R5)Bio-based plastics (R6)Novel secondary bio-based chemicals (R7)
Market Uptake
5 Demo topics in Call 2017
Objective: demonstration of the technical and economic
viability of a new or improved technology, process, product
or service or value chain, achieving TRL 6-7. They must address the
whole value chain, from feedstock sourcing to market applications
BBI JU Budget € 22 million // Grant: up to € 7million / proposal
Feedstock Valorisation of liquid and solid side streams (D1)Valorisation of algae into materials/additives (D2)
Processing
Products Bio-based chemicals without significant fossil-based counterparts (D3)Bio-based fertilizing products (D4)Bio-based fibres and materials for large-volume applications (D5)
Market Uptake
2 Flagships in Call 2017
Objective: deployment of a technology, which has been already
demonstrated leading to a system, which is complete and qualified
(TRL8) for successful commercial operation (large scale production
facility in Europe)
BBI JU Budget € 21 million / Grant: up to € 21 million / proposal
Feedstock
Processing Integrated ‘zero waste’ biorefinery utilising all fractions of the feedstock for production of chemicals and materials (F1)
Products Large scale production of proteins for food and feed applications from alternative, sustainable sources (F2)
Market Uptake
2 CSAs in Call 2017
Objective: non-technological actions supporting value chains
development through various means
BBI JU Budget € 2 million // € 1 million / proposal
Feedstock
Processing
Products
Market Uptake
Establish cooperation and partnership with brand owners and consumer representatives to improve market access (S1)Identify opportunities for ICT to increase efficiency of biomass supply chains for the bio-based industry (S2)

All you need to know before
submitting a proposal
• Basic rules for participation
– Who can apply
– The consortium size
– Funding rules & BBI derogation for large industries
• Read the topic text carefully
– Specific challenge (context)
– Scope (what the proposal aims at, and what should include i.e. TRL, LCA etc)
– Indicative funding (funding request range)
– Expected impact (contribution to BBI KPIs plus others)

• Industrial contribution matters!
• 3 types of contribution:
Consortium own contribution
In kind
• When industry is not funded: 100% of its contribution is in kind (industry commitment)
• When applicant request less than eligible (visible in part A: budget)
In cash
• cash contribution given to one or more partners
Additional investments
Additional Investments
• WHAT are additional investments?
Activities outside the work plan of the BBI JU contributing
to the objectives of the BBI Initiative (investments at the
implementation or exploitation phase infrastructure, durable
equipment,…)
• WHY do we need additional investment?
Industry via BIC shall provide at least € 1 755 million in
additional activities (*)
• HOW are additional investments registered?
Costs are not eligible -> not included in the budget table
But described in the proposal (part B)
At evaluation stage they are assessed within the criterion
Impact(*) COUNCIL REGULATION (EU) No 560/2014 of 6 May 2014 establishing the BBI JU.
Financial Regime in BBI JU Calls
Industry-driven programme
• RIA and CSA: no funding for large companies
→ specific for BBI JU
• Innovation Actions: 70% reimbursement rate
→ common for H2020
Consortium own contribution
– requesting less than funding rate
– « Additional investments »
→ specific for BBI JU

HOW?
H2020 rules apply: there are 3 main evaluation criteria
Impact *
SO WHAT?
BB
I sp
ecific
su
b-c
riteria
IA: coverage of the all Value Chain
RIA/IA: Extent to which consortium contribution, including additional investment, will help maximising the impact of the action
IA: Soundness of the business case and
business plan
IA: TRL
Scores 0 -> Proposal does not meet the criterion at all or cannot be assessed due to missing or incomplete information
1 -> Poor – serious weaknesses
2 -> Fair – goes some way to meeting criterion, but with significant weaknesses
3 -> Good – but with a number of shortcomings
4 -> Very good – but with a small number of shortcomings
5 -> Excellent – meets criterion in every relevant respect. Any shortcomings are minor
Evaluation of proposals Grant preparation Grant signature
Thresholds Excellence score = min. 3/5
Implementation score = min. 3/5
Impact score = min. 4/5
The sum of the three individual scores = min. 11/15
For Innovation actions, to determine the ranking, the score for the criterion ‘impact’ will be given a weighting of 1.5
Evaluation of proposals Grant preparation Grant signature
• Online grant preparation: The process is supported through the
Participant Portal.
• Follow your proposal: The grant agreement and its annexes must not
differ from the proposal. No negotiation in H2020.
• Timeframe: The Grant Agreement must be signed at the latest 8 months
after the call deadline
SME self-assessment (check beforehand - In RIA and CSAs: no confirmed SME = no funding)SME self-assessment
Financial Viability of the Coordinator (select your COO wisely) -Financial Viability Self-Check
