OCTOBER 2012
FOCUS ON……Support
The Support Unit has continued to be a hive of productivity. Mr Blaikie, Dale Norris and their students have
been busy preparing for the construction of the Support Outdoor Learning Area. The students have been busy
digging, levelling and boxing up in preparation for the laying of concrete slabs. New outdoor seating and tables
will be installed once the concrete has set. This will be an invaluable resource to further enhance the quality
learning environment offered to the students in the Support Unit. We would like to thank the McKean family for
their generous donation which has enabled this resource to be constructed.
The Support Unit travelled to Wellington to
compete in the annual Western Region League –Tag
competition. The students had a fabulous time playing
League-Tag and supporting their teammates from the
sidelines with an endless supply of cheers. The students
all showed dazzling ball handling skills, lightning
speed runs and most importantly, quality sportsman-
ship. Mitchell Nash and Breanka Smith were recog-
nised by the refereeing staff for their determined, fair
and supportive manner on the field. They were each
awarded the Best and Fairest medal and certificate.
The Bathurst High team made it to the finals but nar-
rowly missed out on winning, defeated by Wellington.

Miss Laird begins Transition in the next couple of weeks for students transitioning from their Primary
Schools to the Support Unit. Students will attend Bathurst High one day per week to assist in developing an
understanding of the high school environment while fostering positive relationships with staff and students
prior to 2013. We look forward to supporting students and their families as they move into the next phase of
their education.

This term we have welcomed back, from maternity leave, Ms Jude Murphy and Ms Stephanie Scott, both of
whom have been busy in the past year with their new additions, a girl and a boy, future students, for Bath-
urst High. However, we have also had to bid farewell to a much respected and loved member of our faculty.
Mrs Bailey, who has provided learning support for so many Bathurst High students in her 15 years here, re-
tired at the end of term 3.
Recently, Preliminary English students attended Faraway Films at Metro 5 cinemas to enhance their under-
standing of the tools of film production for the HSC and some of them were also entertained by a great local
performance of “The Club”, by David Williamson, a text they had studied in term 2.

On Friday 26th October, the Preliminary
Advanced students took advantage of a
travelling workshop by Bell Shakespeare
on one of their HSC texts for 2013, “Julius
Caesar” and learned about iambic pentam-
eter by limping across the stage. Great
representation!

A great day was had at the State Library of NSW
when Ruby Conlon-Barrett travelled to Sydney
with her mother and Mrs Chapman for the Sydney
Morning Herald Young Writer’s competition
award ceremony. Along with the other regional
winners, Ruby’s story was published in a short
story collection as well as online, and she received
a prize pack that included books, certificates, an
original illustration of her story and membership
to the Writer’s Festival. It was a wonderful day, a
great experience for Ruby and her mother and a
proud moment for Bathurst High.
Mrs Wade travelled with a group of BHC
teachers to the Solomon Islands in Octo-
ber this year, teaching at our sister school,
Goldie College. Mrs Wade worked pre-
dominantly with senior students, teaching
demanding texts from their syllabus such
as the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe
and Guy de Maupassant. A highlight was
when the students performed a dramatic
representation of To Sir With Love. Some
of the junior students enjoyed hearing
about Rapunzel and the holes between
classrooms meant that two groups could
be taught at once! There is no better way
to travel to school than by boat – even
when the frequent rain left teachers
feeling thoroughly water-logged. Mrs Wade and her Goldie College class
In term 4 this year, the Year 10 English classes have been working on Project Based Learning Activities.
Students have been able to choose an elective, with the aim of creating a real life product. Two classes are
working on creating short films for the 2013 Tropfest competition; one class is organising and creating the
advertising campaign for the school’s Aquaculture centre; another is working in groups to write and produce a
graphic novel; the fifth class is learning how to create their own musical piece using computer software and
then market their music, while the sixth class is producing a range of magazines for different purposes and
audiences. It is hoped that the final products will be available on the school website in 2013.
Finally, we would like to wish our HSC students the best of luck with their exams. May your hard work lead
to great results!

News from the Principal’s Office
Jenny Stirling
Relieving Principal
I am at present relieving as Principal while Geoff Hastings relieves as the College Principal. Reading this
newsletter it continues to amaze me how busy the school is. There never seems to be a “quiet” time.
The new syllabi for the Australian Curriculum in English, Maths, Science and History are now finalised for
implementation in years 7 and 9 in 2014. Next year will be a time of planning ready for implementation the
following year. The Board of Studies website has a section for parents and is available at http://
syllabus.bos.nsw.edu.au/support-materials/parents-guide/
The Millenium Parent Portal now has a calendar of events. This allows parents to see many of the announce-
ments received by students in the Daily Notices each day. Parents also have the opportunity to view student
attendance period by period, their timetable, their positive recognitions and any behaviour issues that may oc-
cur. The student’s marks for assessments and reports are also available. Please contact the office and give them
your email address to receive your log in.
On Friday professor Jane Mills from the University of NSW is coming to Bathurst High. She has been work-
ing with our Year 10 Japanese and Photography students on a film project. Students are producing videos of
daily life in Bathurst using their smart phones. These videos will be given to the students of Ohkuma and will
be part of a film festival in Japan. Ohkuma students will producing videos of Japanese life for our students.
We have a strong link with our Ohkuma and this is yet another opportunity to share our experiences with
them.
The planning for our school gym and hall continues. We have recently received updated plans for both areas.
Geoff Hastings, Andrew Smith and Catherine Reid recently visited Wollongong School of Performing Arts to
look at their performance spaces. Some of our areas are similar and it is good to see how other schools are uti-
lising these areas.
Congratulations to Lill Nunan in year 10 who is the proud recipient of a Housing
NSW Youth Scholarship for 2013. Lill is a dedicated student who always strives
to do her very best and she should be congratulated on her achievements. Her
scholarship will be sued to support her study throughout years 11 and 12. Lill
will think carefully about how she can best utilise this scholarship.

News From The Senior School
The Senior School began the term with two major events: Transition Tuesday and the Biotechnology Expo.
Students in Yr 11 were interviewed regarding their pattern of study for the HSC course which commenced at
the end of week one. Each student received their HSC Assessment Schedules and Wall Planner. Students filled
these in and have a visual reminder of due dates for their subjects. Please contact myself or Des Crawford
(Careers Adviser) if you would like to discuss your child’s pattern of study.
Students in Year 10 excelled in presenting their biotechnology projects to an audience of appreciative peers,
parents and teachers, at an expo in the school hall. What a brilliant finale to the integrated unit of work com-
bining the study of genetics, marketing, historical research, economics and imagination. Congratulations to
Mrs Bertolin and the team who worked so hard on this major learning initiative.
The Higher School Certificate Examinations continue until Thursday 8th November. We have a wonderful ex-
amination team of external supervisors. All Year 12 students have been informed of signing out procedures
and have information about the Grad on the 16th Nov.
Congratulations to our students who have been recognised for their outstanding performances in Drama, Mu-
sic and Dance. Details are in this newsletter. Our Creative Arts faculty have not rested since the school musi-
cal and are now involved in Schools Spectacular rehearsals and preparing for the end of year performances at
Commendation Assemblies and the MADD Night. These are always great events as we celebrate the achieve-
ments and talents of students.
The Positive Behaviour for Learning Team are preparing the end of term Rewards event and are working hard
with students on the PBL Matrix which outlines expected behaviour in all areas of the school, ensuring safe,
respectful learners.
All the best for the rest of term,

News From the Middle School
Geoff Tindall
Relieving Deputy Principal-Middle School
Congratulations to our Mind Marathon Tournament team members Jack Knox, Isaiah Radburn and Thomas
Scott Palmer who came second in their regional round of the competition. The competition was held recently
over a full day challenging entrants’ working knowledge of Mathematics, Literacy, History, Science and Gen-
eral Knowledge. The team, accompanied by Mrs Bertolin, now go to the final of the competition in Panania.
We wish them luck.
Cyber Bullying is an important issue which is an emerging problem in a society which is becoming increasing-
ly dominated by social media. At Bathurst High Campus, we are constantly trying to educate students in the
responsible and ethical use of social media. Matt Holden the Police Youth Liaison officer will be running a
year 7 cyber bullying information session with all Year 7 students at school on the 28th of November. This
should be an interesting and worthwhile program.
On Friday Swing Factor went to Orange where along with Orange High School's Big Band they participated in
a workshop run by Mount Gambia's Generations in Jazz Big Band. The GIJ Band is the product of a one year
selective Jazz course run at Mount Gambia which is open to skilled musicians aged 18 to 20. Competition for
entry to this course is very high with the top young jazz musicians from all over Australia audition for only 18
available places. We are very fortunate to have one of our own, Bathurst High's former student Anna Leckie,
in the band this year and next year current student Brendon McLeod will be joining the program.
The workshop was a great success with tutors commenting on the high level of musicianship displayed by our
students. After the workshop they stayed on for the GIJ Big Band concert which was a truly inspiring perfor-
mance as they heard the band play some really challenging but well rehearsed music. This was a great experi-
ence for all involved.
On November 14th, 16 Year 6 Indigenous students from our partner primary schools will be attending a Year 6
into 7 transition day. Students will be involved in a range of activities including a trip the Agriculture farm, tra-
ditional sports activities, making roo burgers for lunch and art activities.
Our Schools Spectacular students, along with Ms Reid, have been busy rehearsing, mastering choreography
and lyrics. They were all extremely excited to attend their first combined rehearsal at the Sydney Entertainment
Centre last Monday, where they were able to see other groups perform and gained insight into how the final
show will be run.
Last week Pat Ford and Joe Hardy travelled to Grafton TAFE to complete their studies in Certificate II in Aq-
uaculture. Completion of their training should benefit all students undertaking Agriculture and provide lots of
exciting learning opportunities in this area, especially with our magnificent new Aquaculture facilities at the
school Ag Farm. The work shop attended by Mr Hardy and Mr Ford involved some theory work and practical
activities. The practical activities involved catching and harvesting 900 live silver perch for the Sydney live
fish market. It also involved work with packaging, including live yabbies. The workshop was well worthwhile
and now gives these teachers confidence in harvesting our own rainbow trout in a safe and
ethical manner at BHC.

Year 12 Presentation Assembly
Year 12 attended their final assembly on Friday 21st September where they received their portfolios. This was
a wonderful celebration attended by a large number of teachers, parents, family, friends and supporters. Our
graduating class of 2012 were officially recognised for their achievements.
Congratulations to the students who received the Academic Achievement Award: Lauren Inwood, Brendon
McLeod, Disapol Savetsila & James Sewell This award is presented to the three highest achieving students in
their HSC assessment (which is calculated mathematically averaging their HSC assessment positions). This
year we had a tie, so 4 were awarded.
A new award was introduced this year, the George Shoemark Trophy, which will be awarded each year in
recognition of Mr George Shoemark’s contribution to sport at Bathurst High over his long career. It will be
awarded for Sportsmanship and this year was awarded to Jayden Tumeth-McLeod for his wonderful sports-
manship at the Regional Cross Country Championship.
Year 7 students from 7D, 7Y and 7N were also a part of the audience and must be commended for their ex-
cellent manners and behaviour during the assembly.

Swing Factor performance at the Caloundra Festival
During the
holidays
Denison Colleges’
Big Band, Swing
Factor, headed
north to
Caloundra in
Queensland for
the annual
Caloundra
Music Festival.
The band spent
four days work-
shopping with
other big band
players and they
performed twice
to large and
appreciative
audiences at the
festival. On the last day of the festival they were invited to perform on the main stage as support acts for
Nicky Bomba and the Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Boom Crash Opera, and The Cat Empire. Their performance
was an absolute knockout with the crowd who were stunned by the standard of musicianship, and left them
begging for more. As a result Swing Factor has been invited back next year.
While at the festival they were also able to watch some great performances by John Butler, The Living End,
The Beards and Noiseworks. The
highlight for band members
however was watching, and then
meeting internationally
acclaimed jazz/rock bands,
Trombone Shorty’s Orleans Ave-
nue, and Stanton Moore’s
Galactic.
This was certainly a gig they will
remember forever!

CSU -Theatre Media Course
Schools Spectacular 2012
Sophie Shephard recently participated in a modelling campaign at CSU for the Communications Theatre
Media course. Sophie along with others worked with professionalism and diligence throughout the whole
process.
Sophie along with students from other schools were required to be present at numerous trials and technical
rehearsals for a parade where they were to showcase the Makeup of the Major work 'Faces of Sprung'. They
also had to model in front of a large crowd of people including lecturers, students and family which they did
with poise and open mindedness.
Schools Spectacular Update: Only one month to go until 2012 Schools Spectacular.
Students are busy mastering choreography and lyrics.
Congratulations to all the students involved in our fund-
raiser on Fri 26th Oct. We raised nearly $600 from both
out of uniform funds and a cake stall. A special thank
you to all the dancers who performed the flash mob on
the quad. A very successful day for all involved.
Next on the Schools Spectacular Calendar is the first
combined rehearsal at the Sydney Entertainment Centre
on Mon 29th October. Students will get to see other
groups perform and get an insight into how the show
will run. I think it's going to be a very exciting and long
day ahead.

PDHPE
Open Boys’ Hockey Finalists.
A fantastic effort not only reaching the finals series but making the final match of the series and competing
against Oxley High School from Tamworth for the gold medal and title of State Champions. The team beat
Moss Vale HS 3-1 with Luke Thorncraft scoring 2 goals and
token soccer player come hockey expert Andrew Collins with
1. They then beat Taree HS 5-4 in a very close tussle to make
the final. Riley Hanrahan with a hat trick of 3 goals, Mitchell
Wheeler and Daniel Plicha with a goal apiece meant that a
shot at the title of the states’ best hockey team was in their
reach. Oxley High’s team consisted of a player considered to
currently be the best in his position in Australia and tipped to
be in the Kookaburras within the next 4 year. He caused most
of the damage scoring three early goals. Another player had a
father who was a previous member of the Kookaburras! The
final score of 5-2 was very respectable with goals to Luke
Thorncraft providing a very close game despite the final score. Keeping 3 of their reserves without game time
showed the lengths to which their team was prepared to go to win the final. In closing, the owners of several
businesses around Newcastle commented on the behaviour of the boys while traveling in the team bus and
stopping at places to eat, Darby’s Pies and Pastry in particular saying that they “were the friendliest and most
polite group that she has served” making a very proud coach and teacher Josh Lawler.
Cycling
Harrison Carter has been extremely successful this year in his chosen sport of
cycling, making the Under 18’s state team recently and showing excellent form
in both track and road racing. He is hopefully about to gain selection in the
NSW Institute of Sport team to compete next January in the Youth Olympics in
Sydney
Tayla Buckley recently competed in the State Age championships in Track Cycling. She was
extremely successful, winning each of her 3 races and the final, becoming age champion in
the 17 years division, a division nearly 2 years older than what she is. Fantastic effort Tayla!
Lawn Bowls
Cindy McGrath has been selected in the Country team for lawn Bowls series coming soon,
playing a city team in the upcoming city versus country tournament and a junior state
representative in the past.
