Almost 70 percent of world cassava are concentrated in five countries, namely
Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia and the Congo Democratic Republic. Cassava
is grown on all provinces in Indonesia. Both cassava roots and leaves are suitable
for consumption. By innovating zero waste concept the peel of cassava can be
consumed. The members of student team of IPB in MIIIE 2015, Mr. Farauq
Arrahman, Mr. Galih Nugraha, Ms. Putri Vionita, dan Mr. Abdul Azis, succeeded in
producing liquid sugar using specific enzymes (alpha-amylase and
amyloglukosidase). This sugar, named "Gucakusi", has lower calories
(106kcal/100gr) than sugar cane (364kcal/100g) thus it is suitable for diabetics.
IPB is the only university from three Indonesian universities that received a gold
medal and three special awards in the event of Macau 4th International
Innovation and Invention Exhibition (MIIIE) held on July 2015. The event was
organized by the World Intellectual Property Invention Association (WIIPA) and
Macau Innovation and Invention Association (MIIA). The special award to the IPB
team of innovators is given by Polish Innovation Institute, the International
Federation of Inventors Association (IFIA), and World Intellectual Property
Invention Association (WIIPA). IPB team, as the representative of Indonesia, was
able to beat 250 competitors and 80 other innovations from 22 countries in the
world such as Thailand, Philippines, China, Canada, South Korea, Poland, Taiwan,
and other countries.

IPB 3S and 4S, the New Rice Varieties
for National Food Security Program
Rice is the most important food crop grown in
Indonesia. It is the main staple food for most the
population. National self-sufficiency in the main
staple food, such as rice, corn, and soybean,
becomes one of the core objectives of agricultural
and economic policy in order to increase domestic
production and to fulfill domestic consumption.
Innovation plays important role to meet these
objectives. One of the innovations to support rice
self-sufficiency program is breeding the new
varieties with high productivity.
The new varieties or the new plant types
(NPT's), named as IPB 3S and 4S, were
developed by experienced breeders of Bogor
Agricultural University (IPB), led by Dr. Hajrial
Aswidinnoor. The innovation comprise of two
components, i.e. improved rice seedling and
implementation of best practices in cultivation
with the increase of organic materials for
improving soil fertility. The average yield of rice
planted on 500 ha rice field was 8.5 ton/ha,
much higher than the average national
productivity of 5.5 ton/ha. This innovation
potentially support the establishment of food
security in Indonesia in the near future.
