The owners of a new dental practice in East Vancouver have a second business — Accentuate, in
downtown Camas.Dr. Michael Koceja and
his wife Sandra, of Camas, have opened Columbia La-ser Dentistry.
The advantages of laser dentistry, according to Dr. Koceja, include precision in filling placement with-out the vibration and noise from a traditional drill and a faster healing and recov-ery time. He said laser den-tistry minimizes bleeding,
swelling and the chance of bacterial infections, and many procedures may not require anesthesia.
Koceja, a 1986 graduate of the Marquette Univer-sity School of Dentistry, served in the Navy. He trained in all areas of den-tistry and had a peridontal fellowship as well as a den-tal practice in San Marcos, Calif.
Koceja has lectured
in the U.S. and overseas about the use of lasers in dentistry. He has achieved mastership level at the World Clinical Laser Insti-tute, where he is a member of the certification commit-tee.
Koceja has written ar-ticles about laser dentistry for publications such as “Dentistry Today” and “In-terdental.”
He has volunteered with
the “Good Samaritans,” a volunteer organization that operates free medical clinics in Baja, Calif.
Columbia Laser Den-tistry is located at 217 S.E. 136th Ave., Ste. #103, Van-couver. For more informa-tion, call 953-8135, email columbialaserdental@com-cast.net or visit www.co-lumbialaserdentistry.com.

Eagle Rehabilitation at Camas recently made a pledge to support and honor the men and women who are members of the United States military Guard and Reserve. Representatives from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense organization, recently visited the local facility to present certificates memorializing this commitment to U.S. troops. The ESGR was established to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment. Pictured above are (left to right) Camas resident Art McCallum, ESGR ombudsman; Sheri Boles, occupational therapist at Eagle Rehabilitation; Diane Backstrom, Eagle Rehabilitation director of nursing; Col. Daniel R. Kern, Washington National Guard; Paul McVay, Eagle Rehabilitation administrator; and Joel F. Scott, ESGR area chair for the Washington Committee. For more information, visit www.esgr.org.

A local resident is hoping to increase the awareness of the American Diabetes Association and its mis-sion to prevent and cure diabetes.
Andrea Bruno, of Cam-as, recently joined the asso-ciation as executive direc-tor for Oregon, Southwest Washington and Southern Idaho.
She said the associa-tion’s mission also includes improving the lives of all people affected by diabe-tes.
“Our priorities moving forward include developing
a network of partnerships that will help us stop dia-betes and fulfill our mis-sion,” Bruno said.
She also wants to in-crease resources to fund research, education and advocacy and expand vol-unteer committees and roles.
She has worked for non profits for more than 18 years, which has included experience with fund rais-ing, budgeting and rela-tionship-building. Bruno served most recently as the chief development of-ficer for Loaves & Fishes Centers, Inc., in Portland.
Prior to that, she was the vice president for ad-vancement at the Concor-dia University Foundation in Portland, and state di-rector of development for the Oregon Chapter of the March of Dimes.
