• What is Behavior Modification ? • How to handle difficult behaviors. • Learn tips. Techniques and when will we apply
such
Behavior Modification• Use of different techniques to
modify and alter undesirable behaviors
• Use of rewards, punishments, modeling and learning in modifying behaviors
Good vs. Bad Behavior
• Identify if it is appropriate or not• Identify situation, environment,
physical condition that may cause inaapropriate behavior
Important behaviors
• Attention Span– 3- 5 minutes times his age is the
appropriate attention span• Sitting Behavior– Can sit for a long period of time, and
finish a task• Following Instructions
Important behaviors
• Frustration Tolerance– Can tolerate mistakes, and ask for
help• Appropriate Socialization– Fight and flight response
• Response to Authority– Si mommy, daddy at teacher ang
masusunod
Why Behavior Modification??
• Children are continously learning• Madaling makumbinsi at masanay• What they see is what they know• They learn by associating good
things with good behaviors
What are the techniques?
• Rewards/ Positive Reinforcements• Punishments• Contract Setting• Ignoring • Modeling• Desensitization• Chaining • Time- out• Satiation
Rewards/ Positive Reinforcements• Reward good behaviors only• Pwedeng time to play, appraisals
– Resulta: puro good behavior para puro reward
Punishments
• Give something aversive/ undesirable to remove bad behavior
Contract Setting• Use of a verbal or written agreement• Effective when both parties agree• Uses rewards and punishment as part of the
agreement• What is good about this?? Involvement of an
activity and expands knowledge of good behavior
• Ex. Writing Name on Paper= Jollibee • Target: Magawa ng bata ang activity, at
masanay siya dito sa mga gawaing ito.
Chaining• Breaking down activities into smaller tasks or
steps• Procedures • Halimbawa: pagbubutones
Time- out• Lesser form ng punishment• Kapalit ng pamamalo at ibang parusa• ‘face the wall’
Ignoring• Effective on attention seeking behaviors o
pagpapapansin• Temper tantrums versus Manipulative
Modeling• Imitation of good behaviors• Product of socialization• School and home are factors to
consider• Applicable when child has problems
in speech, in sitting & in some fears• Target: matutunan niya na ang
Desensitization
• Gradual or unti- unting exposure to undesirable things
• Effective on separation anxiety and other common fears
• Some fears are just normal and is part of one’s development
• Hal. Pagsigawin pa lalo para mapagod at sumawa sa ginagawa
Common childhood misbehaviors & Problems• Tantrums• Hyperactivity & Poor Attention
Span• Separation Anxiety
Tantrums• Know why there is a tantrum• If manipulative, Let it be/ Ignore• Let him know, that it won’t get
him far• Praise good behavior, disregard
bad ones• Be consistent
Hyperactivity and Poor Attention Span• Employ rewards and punishments• Let them know who is in charge• Do activities that require a bit of
multi tasking• Be always firm and consistent
Separation Anxiety• Practice• Desensitization • Rewards and punishments• Be calm and consistent– Even on promises
