AR & Virtual Reality (VR)

AR is the computer application that manipulates digital info to be augmented in reality.

VR is when reality is virtually augmented in the computer application.

A Simple DefinitionAugmented Reality (AR) is a super-imposed illusion of an interactive 3 dimensional environment or multimedia such as an image, a text, sound and movie on the computer screen when the camera of a computer device which already has the software installed tracks a marker in reality by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). (Vate-U-Lan, 2010).

About using a marker1. Something on the top of a

marker means it will turn off.

2. A marker can even work on skin or cloth and should be printed on normal paper, not glossy paper.

3. Colour or black and white of marker does not a matter. This herald a new era of publishing!

4. AR also works in a markerless environment.

The preferred type of AR 3D pop-up book

• AR 3D Pop-up book and 3D Pop-up book both – Present the same pop-up object– Play the same sound– Arrange in the same order

Comparison of these two modes Augmented Reality book 3D Pop-up book

1. Need a web camera 1. No need of a web camera

2. Users see reality of the environment especially see themselves

2. Users see colorful background and objects which might add info to the course

3. Control book by moving a maker

3. Control by a mouse of a computer

Guidelines for using AR for educational purposes

1) Augmented Reality on marker is a most exciting mode.

2) The light must be appropriate during the demonstration.

3) The quality of ink on a marker needs to be good.

4) The crispate (or unclear) marker gives poor quality AR.

5) The camera is simulating the same site users are reviewing, thus the users will see the reflected picture as if it were a mirror reversed.

Conclusion (1/2)• AR has become more fascinating for

anyone, anytime, anywhere and through anything, because of – ubiquitous computing, especially mobile

phones, – availability of cameras on computer devices– open source application

• AR is an innovation that can be developed to enhance quality of education at all levels.

Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 48

Conclusion (2/2)

• The AR projects for educational purposes demands a good plan in all aspects such as: design, learning objectives, technology and budgeting.

• Further research to explore all these issues is needed.
