I have great pleasure in doing my project on “MARKET SHARE ANALYSIS
OF BHEL VIS COMPETITORS”. Need of this project arises because summer
training with project report is a part of my syllabus. Another reason is that is one of
the important aspects for an MBA student’s career. It is basically to strengthen our
knowledge with the latest technologies and recent development.
As an MBA student it is necessary to know deeply about international marketing
and its various aspects.
This project is an indispensable vide-mecum for the students who are in relation
with the international trade.
I have compiled this report with my best efforts and I hope this report will give

BHEL INTRODUCTION
In the past independence era when India was moving towards industrialization, the
major thrust of the government was in the core sector and this was given to the
public sector with this objective. Heavy electrical limited was set up in Bhopal in
August 1956 with a view to reach self sufficiency industrial products and power
equipments. This plant was set up under technical collaboration of MIS AEL, U.K.
There more plant were subsequently set up to Triuchy, Hyderabad and Hardwar
with soviet and Czechoslovakian assistance in may 1965, Dec 1965 and Jan 1967
respectively.
As there was need for integrated approach for the development of power
equipments to be manufactured in India, heavy electrical limited, Bhopal was
merged into BHEL in 1974.
BHEL has now become the largest engineering total 42600 employees on 2009.
Onwards it's Delhi and there are 14 manufacturing units.

reference to power equipment.

BUSINESS OVERVIEW
BHEL is the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in India in the
energy related infrastructure sector today. BHEL was established more than 50
years ago when its first plant was set up in Bhopal ushering in the indigenous
Heavy Electrical Equipment industry in India, a dream which has been more than
realized with the well-recognized track record of performance. It has been earning
profits continuously since 1971-72 and achieved a sales turnover of Rs.
21,608crore with a profit before tax of Rs. 4,395crore and Profit after Tax of Rs.
2,815Crore in 2007-2008.
BHEL caters to core sectors of the Indian Economy viz., Power Generation
& Transmission, Industry, Transportation, Telecommunication, Renewable
Energy, Defense, etc. The wide network of BHEL’s 14 Manufacturing Divisions,
four Power Sector regional centers, over 100 project sites, eight service centers and
15 regional offices, enables the Company to promptly serve its customers and
provide them with suitable products, systems and services-efficiently and at
competitive prices.
BHEL has already attained ISO 9001 certification for quality management,
ISO 14001 certification for environment management and OHSAS-18001
certification for Occupational health and safety management systems for its major
units/division.

IN THE FIELD OF POWER GENERATION:
Power Generation Sector comprises thermal, gas, hydro and nuclear power
plant business. As of 31.03.2007, BHEL supplied sets account for nearly 80781
MW or nearly 65% of the total installed capacity of 1,25,414 MW in the country.
Significantly these sets contribute 73% of the total power generated in India.
BHEL has proven turnkey capabilities for executing power projects from
concept to commissioning.
It possesses the technology and capability to produce thermal sets with super
critical parameters up to 1000 MW unit rating and gas turbine-generator sets of up
to 250 MW units rating. Co-generation and combined-cycle plants have been
introduced to achieve higher plant efficiencies. To make efficient use of the high-
ash-content coal available in India, BHEL supplies circulating fluidized bed
combustion boilers to both thermal and combined-cycle power plants.
IN THE FIELD OF TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION (T&D):
BHEL offers wide - ranging products and systems for T & D applications.
Products manufactured included: Power Transformers, Instrument Transformers,
Cast Resin Dry type Transformers, Series and Shunt Reactors, Capacitor banks,

Vacuum & SF6 Circuit breakers, gas insulated switchgear, energy meters, SCADA
systems and Insulators.
A strong engineering base enables the Company to undertake delivery of
electric substations up to 400 KV level, series compensation system (for increasing
power transformer capability of transmission lines and improving system stability
and voltage regulation), shunt compensation systems (for power factor and voltage
improvement) and HYDC systems (for economic transfer of bulk power). BHEL
has indigenously developed the state-of-the-art controlled shunt reactor (for
reactive power management on long transmission lines). Presently, a 400 KV
FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System). The company undertakes
comprehensive projects to reduce A TC losses in distribution systems.
IN THE FIELD OF INDUSTRIES:
BHEL is a major contributor of equipment and systems to Industries:
Cement, Sugar, Fertilizer, Refineries, Petrochemicals, Paper, Oil and Gas,
Metallurgical and other process industries. The range of systems & equipment
supplied includes: Captive power plants, Co-generation plants, DG power plants,
Industrial steam turbines, Industrial boilers and auxiliaries, Waste heat recovery
boilers, Gas turbines, Heat exchangers and pressure vessels, Centrifugal
compressors , Electrical machines, Pumps, Valves, Seamless steel tubes,
Electrostatic precipitators, Fabric filters, Reactors, fluidized bed combustion

boilers, Chemical recovery boilers and Process controls and material handling
systems.
The Company is a major producer of large - size thermistor devices; it also
supplies digital distributed control systems for and industrial applications. BHEL is
the only company in the India with the capability to make simulators for power
plants, defense and other applications.
IN THE FIELD OF TRANSPORATION:
BHEL is involved in the development, design, engineering, marketing,
production, installation, maintenance and after sales service of rolling stock and
traction propulsion systems. In the area of the rolling stock, BHEL manufactures
electric locomotives up to 5000 HP, Diesel electric locomotives from 350 HP to
3100 HP, both for mainline and shunting duty applications. BHEL is also
producing rolling stock for special applications viz., overhead equipment cars,
Special well wagons, Rail-cum road vehicle etc. Besides traction propulsion
systems for in-house use, BHEL manufactures traction propulsion systems for
other rolling stock producers of electric locomotives, diesel locomotives, electric
multiple units and metro cars.

IN THE FIELD OF TELE-COMMUNICA TION:
BHEL also caters to Telecommunication Sector by way of small, medium
and large switching systems.
IN THE FIELD OF RENEWABLE ENERGY:
Technologies that can be offered by BHEL for exploiting non-conventional
and renewable sources of energy include: wind electric generators, solar
photovoltaic systems, solar heating systems, solar lanterns and battery -powered
road vehicles. The Company has taken up R & D efforts for development of multi-
junction amorphous silicon solar cells and fuel cells based systems. BHEL also
undertakes projects in the area of distributed power covering small hydro and gas
engine based on generation systems.
IN THE FIELD OF OIL AND GAS:
BHEL is major contributor to the Oil and Gas sector industry in the country.
BHEL’s product range includes Deep Drilling Oil Rigs, Mobile Rigs, Work Over
rigs, Well Heads and X-Mas Trees (of up to 10,000 psi ratings), Choke and Kill
Manifolds , Full Bore Gate Valves , Mud Valves, Mud line Suspension System,
Casing Support System, Sub - Sea Well Heads, Block Valves, Seamless Pipes,

Motors, Compressors, Heat Exchangers, etc. BHEL is the single largest supplier of
Well Heads, X-Mas Trees and Oil Rigs to ONGC and OIL.
In addition, BHEL has successfully undertaken turnkey projects on its own
and possesses to requisite flexibility to interface and complement with
international companies for large projects and has also exhibited adaptability by
manufacturing and supplying intermediate products
IN THE INTERNATIONAL FIELDS:
BHEL is one of the largest exporters of engineering products & services
from India, ranking among the major power plant equipment suppliers in the
world. Over the years, BHEL has established its references in around 60 countries
of the world, ranging from United States in the West to New Zealand in the Far
East. These references encompass almost the entire product range of BHEL
products and services, covering turnkey power projects of thermal, hydro and gas -
based sectors, substation projects, rehabilitation projects, besides a wide variety of
products, like transformers, compressors, valves and oil field equipment,
electrostatic Precipitator, Insulators, heat exchangers, switchgears, castings and
forgings. Some of the major successes achieved by BHEL have been Thermal,
Hydro and Gas-based Power projects in Malaysia; Gas based power project in
Oman Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Libya, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, Kazakhistan;
Thermal Power projects in Cyprus, Malta, . Egypt, Indonesia, Thailand; Hydro
power plants in New Zealand, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Nepal, Taiwan and Sub-station

project & equipment in various countries. Execution of overseas projects has also
provided BHEL the experience of working with world-renowned Consulting
Organization and Inspection Agencies.

DEVELOPMENT
To remain in competitive and meet customers’ expectations, BHEL lays
great emphasis on the continuous up gradation of products and related technologies
and development of new products. The company has upgraded its products to
contemporary levels through continuous in house efforts as well as through
acquisition of new technologies from leading engineering organizations of the
World.
The Corporate R&D Division of Hyderabad, spread over a 140-acre
complex, leads BHEL’s research efforts in number of areas of importance to
BHEL, s product range.
BHEL is the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in India In the
energy related Infrastructure today.

Environment in 2002 and ISO 18001 for Health and safety in 2003. Instrument

The layout of the plant is such that it is well streamlined to enable smooth material
flow from the raw material stages to finished goods. All the feeder bays have been
laid perpendicular to main assembly bay and in each feeder bay raw material
smoothly gets converted to subassemblies, which after inspection are sent to main
assembly bay.
The raw material that is needed for manufacture is used only after through
material testing lab and with strict quality checks at various stages of production.
This unit of BHEL is basically engaged in the production and manufacturing of
transformers of various type and capacities.

The total man power strength of BHEL Jhansi is around 1848 out of which
about 228 qualified Engineers, 262 Supervisors & 1052 Technicians, 118
supporting technical staff, 67 clerks and 48 semi-skilled and unskilled workers are
working in Transformer & Locomotive division.
BHEL Jhansi transformer design department has a staff of about 75 employees out
of which 32 are qualified Engineers. It is equipped with IRISH, USA DIM PC,
OMEGA and SUNSP ARKS ICIM, IBM computers. It is also equipped with
central library of around 5000 technical books. 100 technical journals, 6000
national and international standards and 400 technical reports.
The transformer manufacturing department comprises of fabrication machine shop,
core & punch, winding & insulation and transformer assembly shops. It has
manufacturing capacity of around 5500 MVA per annum and up to 220 KV class
transformer. It is equipped with 100 tones crane capacity on single basis while this
can be upgraded 200 tones by putting two cranes in tandem.
The central quality control department comprises of inspection and testing groups
having around 120 employees consisting of Engineers Supervisors and
Technicians, stage inspection/stage tests as well as final testing of the products is
being conducted by this department. Our quality and test group is also equipped
with a material testing lab where rigorous testing of various raw-materials and used
components is performed. Calibration of various instruments used during
manufacturing inspection/testing is another important responsibility of our material
testing Lab.

BHEL covers a wide area in production. These areas are mentioned in the

POWER:
Provide a gamut of equipment for Thermal Hydro and Nuclear power plant.
Range includes products and system for power generation, transmission and
utilization.
TRANSMISSION:
BHEL manufacturing transmission equipment for all voltage rating
including the 400 KV class transformers switches gears, control and relay panel.
Insulators, capacitors and other substation equipment.
INDUSTRY:
Offers a comprehensive range of electrical, electronic and mechanical
equipment for a host of industries like fertilizers, petrochemicals, refineries, paper,
sugar, rubber, cement coal, steel aluminum and mining.

TRANSPORTATION:
BHEL offers a variety of transportation equipment to meet the growing
needs of the country, 65% of Indian Railways are equipped with BHEL
manufacturing traction equipment.
Underground metro also runs on drives and controls supplied by BHEL.
BHEL has taken up the manufacturing of Locomotives to provide a pollution free
transportation. BHEL also offers a battery operated Passenger Van provides to
Delhi Government.
OILS & GAS:
Equipment for oils and gas exploration and transportation is manufactured
by BHEL. The range covers super deep drills rigs. Mobile and desert rigs with
matching drew works and hoisting equipment.
NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY:
A Vital role in helping to harness the vast renewable source of solar wind
and biogas energy. BHEL has supplied several water heating systems wind mills,
biogas generators and photo voltaic system.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
JHANSI (UNIT)
By the end of 5th five-year plan it was envisaged by the planning
commission that the demand for power transformer would rise in the coming years.
Anticipating the country’s requirement BHEL decided to set up a new plant, which
would manufacture power and other type of the transformers in addition to the
capacity available at BHEL Bhopal.
This unit of Jhansi was established about 14 km from the city on the N.H
No.- 26 on Jhansi-Lalitpur road. It is called second-generation plant of BHEL and
was set up in 1974 at an estimated cost of Rs. 16.22 crores in Clusive of Rs. 2.1
crores for township. Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi laid its foundation on 9th Jan 1974.
The commercial production of the unit began in 1976-77 with an output of Rs. 53
Lacs.
Jhansi unit of BHEL corporation is certified for its quality products and
services to ISO-9001 in march 1994. BHEL Jhansi has also got ISO 14001
certification for Environment in 2002 and ISO 18001 for Health and safety in
2003.

JHANSI UNIT ORGANISATIONAL
Our summer training consists of two parts, first is the rotation of various
departments of BHEL JHANSI and second is the preparation of this project.
MAIN AIM OF THE ROTATION
Main aim behind the rotation of various departments is that one can
understand the working of each and every department and to see that how people
(workers ,middle level executives, top officials) work in corporate environment.
In rotation, trainees see how employees work and also they see the function
of each department.

In transformer section, there are 10 bays. The functioning of each bay is
described in short as follows:-
BAY 0:- There is fabrication shops established in 1978 and it is preparation
shop for bay 1&2.
BAY 1&2:- Deals with fabrication of transformers tank and bogie frame of
locomotives.
BA Y 3:- It is the machine shop. Machining of parts is being done in this
shop.
BAY 4:- Here the winding work of the power transformer is carried out.
BAY S:- It is the core and punch section.
BA Y 6:- It is also engaged in two processes; one half is the winding section
while other half is for traction transformer manufacturing like Freight Loco &
ACEMU Transformers.
BAY 7:- In this bay manufacturing dry type of transformers and various
type of insulating are prepared to be used in the transformer.
BAY 8:- This bay is established in 1974 it is one of the earliest bays to be
set up. It is involved in the manufacturing of instrument transformer of 132 KV
and 220 KV voltage transformer, current transformer and High Voltage Rectifier
transformers for Electro Static precipitators.

BAY 9:- This is one of the largest bays in the unit engaged in the assembly
of the power and rectifier transformer. The time taken for the assembly ranges
from 4-12 weeks.
(1) BUSDUCT SHOP:
This shop contains bus duct engg. & bus duct production.
(2) LOCOMOTIVE SHOP:
Locomotive shop is one of the most important shop in the factory. It deals
with the manufacture and production of the following types of locomotives:

CLASSIFICATION OF SHOPS
FABRICATION
Fabrication is nothing but production .It occupies of three bays i.e. Bay -O,
Bay 1, and Bay -2.
BAY-O
It is the preparation shop. There are different machines available to perform
different types of function. This section has the following machines:-
Planer machine -To reduce thickness
Shearing machines -To shear the metal sheet according to required
dimensions.
CNC flame cutting machine - To cut complicated shaft items using Oxy -
acetelene flame.
Some other cutting machines are;
Pantograph machine
Hand torch cutting machine
Bending machine
Rolling machine
Drilling machine

BAY-1 : It is an assembly shop where different parts of tank come from bay-O.
Here welding process such as arc welding ,CO2 welding ,TIG&MIG welding are
used for assembly, after which a rough surface is obtained, grinding operation at
1200 rpm is used to eliminate the roughness.
BAY -2: It is an assembly shop dealing with making different objects mentioned
below:
1. Tank assembly
2. Tank cover assembly
3. End frame assembly
4. core clamp assembly
5. Pin & pad assembly
After assembly some test are done known as NON DESTRUCTIVE
TEST.

TRM BAY-3: Here basically we have three sections in the bay:

(b) SHEARING MACHINE: It is operated hydraulically and its blade has V
shape.
(c) DIE AND PUN CHIN G MACHINE: It is also hydraulically operated and has
a die and punch for making holes.
(d) BLNDING MACHINE: Used for bending and is also hydraulic.
3. TOOLING SECTION:
It is the servicing of tools is done

(a) BLADE SHARP MACHINE: It sharpens the blade using a circuler diamond
cutter .Blade of CNC cropping line machine is sharpened her.
(b) MINI SURF ACE GRINDER: It serves grinding purpose. It has a grinding
wheel made of aluminium oxide.
(c) DRILL GRINDING MACHINE: To grind the drill.
TRM BAY -4: In this the servicing of is done.

There are low voltage coil, high voltage coil is fixed in transformers. The type of
winding depeding upon the job requirement. Conductor is used for winding is in
the form of very long strip wound on spool. The conductor is covered by cellulose
paper for insulation. The winding is done according to the specification given the
drawing
TRM BAY-5: It is core and punch section.
For the purpose of cutting and punching the core three machines are installed in
shop.

(A) SLITTING MACHINES: It is used for cut crgo sheets in different width It
has a circular cutter whose position can be changed as per the requirement.
(B) CNC CROPPING LINE PNEUMA TIC: It contain only one blade, which
can rotate at 900 above the sheets. It is operated pneumatically.
(C) CNC CROPPING LINE HYDROLIC MACHINE: It is also used to cut the
crgo sheets it contained to blades one is fixed and other is rotated 900 above the
sheets. It operated hydraulically.
TRM BAY-6: Single phase traction transformers for AC locomotives is assembled
in this section. These freight locomotive transformer used where there is frequent
change in speed. In this bay core winding and all the assembly and testing the
traction transformers is done.
3-phase transformers for acemu are also manufactured in this section. The
supply line for this transformer is of 25 kv and power of this transformer is
6500kva.

TRMBAY -9: In this bay power transformers are assembled, after taking different
input from different bays. Assembly is done. Power transformer is used to step
down voltage at generation and sub station. There are various rating 11 kv, 22kv.

LOCOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING (LMM)
This section deals with manufacturing of locomotive the main parts of locomotive
are.
Under frame; the frame on which a locomotive is built.
Super structure; the body locomotive called superstructure or shell and is
made of sheet of mild steel.

Bogie the wheel arrangement of loco is called a bogic. A bogic essentially
contains;
1. Wheel axel arrangement.

Traction transformer: It is fixed on under frame from on overhead line by
equipment called pantograph. The type of pantograph depends on supply.
This transformer steps down voltage and it fitted with a tap changer.
Different taps are taken from it for operating different equipment.

One tap is taken and is rectified into DC using MSR and IS fed to DC motor.
Railway has two type of power supplies-25 1 phase 50hz AC-1500 VDC an
AC/DC loco is able to work on both of these supplies. For e.g. ECAM-3 and
gets supply.

TRANSFORMER COMMERCIAL (TRC)
The objective of departments is interaction with the customers. It brings out
tenders and notices and also responds to term. It is this department that bags
contracts of building transformer. After delivery regarding faults this department
dose failures and maintenance. All such snags are reported to them and they
forward the information to the concerning department. One of major task of this
department is to earn decent profile over all negociations. Transformer industry has
become very competitive. The company offering the lowest price gets the contract
but this process my continue does the work on very low profile. To avoid such as a
situation a body by the name of India electrical manufactures assumption (IEMA)
was set up. This association helps to maintain a healthy competitive atmosphere in
the manufacturing of electrical appliance.

TRANSFORMER ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT :
The design department is divided into three main sections:

TRANSFORMER ENGINEERING
Function of the department: This department has its own importance in the
organization. This is the department that gives its services to the production
department. The function of design department starts right from the stage of
tendering.
Firstly: The customer gives his specification. These specifications are received by
commercial departments, which are dealt with commercial aspects. The design
department deals in the technical aspect. This aspect is technical requirement of the
customer; the duty of design department is to see whether technical requirement
can be met or not. If necessary they do some negotiations also. After the
negotiations both parties reach to an agreement, which is acceptable to them.
After getting the order, the design department’s prepares of the job
according to specification of the customer. After preparing the detailed design they
send it to the specification of the customer. After preparing the detailed design they
send it to the commercial department. This department in presence of the customer
also does the testing of finished and semi-finished product.

MAJOR THINGS IN THIS DEPARTMENT:
This design department has a print room, where machine made by “Minolta’s
companies” are used. The machine is latest of the kind in Jhansi. The blue prints of
designs are also made in this department. The computer known as OMEGA 58000,
is also there with the help of design of a transformer can be made with five
minutes, had the same design been made by the drafters it would have taken 7-8
days. The design department also has a plotter which is an imported machine from
USA. It is used to make graphs and other transformers design with accuracy.
COMMUNICATION IN DESIGN DEPARTMENT:
The communication in design department is through proper channel if the
information is of administrative nature. For the technical information they
communicate with high accuracy because products are heavy and inexpensive so
even a small dissertation in communication may create a problem for them.
STRUCTURE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
This department has its structure on the product basis. There are 25 executives 14
supervisors and 41 draftsmen in this department. This department has notable
coordination among its employees. The engineers and draftsmen perform their
work consultation of each other.

Sometimes the respondents were full of confidence while giving the answer
while some times they gave answers without thinking much over it.

RECOMMENDATION AND SUGGESTIONS
The main products of BHEL Jhansi are Transformers then Locomotives &
Bus ducts. To expand the market for these products of BHEL regular seminars
should be conducted. These seminars should emphases on the awareness &
advertisements of Bell's products & their characteristic, features etc among the
customers related to that region this will in turn help in advertising of Bell's
product in the region of immense competitors where the other players are situated.
DUST FREE SHOP:
BHEL should go for the dust free shops as other company are already have.
It will helpful to attract customers.
UHV LAB:
BHEL Jhansi should go for the UHV lab which is good for the transformer.
MARKET SHARE:
To increase the market share the BHEL should emphasize export Procedure
and try to reduce importing so maximum foreign Currency may retain.
