Artificial Intelligence In The Field of Robotics

-Sushma KM(ISE 6Th Sem)-Nipa Sarkar(ISE 6Th Sem)-Prateek Patel(ISE 6Th Sem)

What is a Robotics?Robotics is the branch

of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing.

What is Artificial Intelligence?Artificial intelligence (AI) is

the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is an academic field of study which studies the goal of creating intelligence

John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1955, defines it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines".

What is AI in Robotics?

REEM-A is a Humanoid capable of playing chess and interacting with humans.

Why AI in Robotics is Crucial?

Unimate was the first industrial robot, which worked on a General Motors assembly line at the New Jersey Plant. Weighing a metric ton it was used to weld metals together.

History of AI & Robotics…

The UNIMATE used magnetic disks to store program that made them do tasks.

IRB-6 : First robot controlled by microcomputer had 16kb of Ram. Had a digital display and was easily programmable

First Generation Second Generation

Third Generation Fourth Generation

CONSIGHT robot used visual scanners to differentiate between different parts going on conveyer belt. GM motors

BAXTER was the first fully Artifical Intelligent Humanoid. Capable of performing variety of tasks using its arms.

Modern Day AI Robots..

Industries today install fully automatic plants guided by only Robots.

Progress of Robotics and AI

ASIMO by Honda

ASIMO, an acronym for Advanced StepnInnovative MObility,  is humanoid robot designed and developed by Honda. Introduced on 21 October 2000, ASIMO was designed to be a multi-functional mobile assistant.

With aspirations of helping those who lack full mobility, ASIMO is frequently used in demonstrations across the world to encourage the study of science and mathematics.

AI Robots Being used right now.POLICE AND DISASTER RELIEF

PACKBOT: It is a recon robot capable of climbing stairs and going through rubble. It is extremely hard and employs gps and a camera.

SWARMBOT: They are a group of small robots using Follow the leader rule. Can be used for large scale exploration of risky areas.

WORKFORCE & HEAVYLIFTINGHRP ONE HRP TWO

This robot is being employed to drive machines and tractors in farms and factories in Japan.

This robot is being used to lift weights in factories having heavy raw materials such as metal sheets etc.

MEDICAL & SURGICAL FIELD

Medical Patients who are unable to move have a transmitter embedded in the brain and a smart robot receives the message and shows it on the screen.

Eric a paper mill worker lost his arm in a freak accident. He was given a bionic arm which picks up signals from his shoulder blades to move the arm.

Ambassadors Of Robotics & AIThe Japanese have been front

runners in promoting Robotics.Majority of their population are

old and are in severe need of domestic help.

The government see’s robots as the future of household and industries.

They are the leading innovaters and developers in the field

Learning Cycle in Robotics..

COG 1 is a intelligent robot which uses its visual scanners to look at things identify patterns and remember the same for the next time a similar event occurs.

K1 is a Robot capable of imitating the actions of the user it see’s. The robot can be taught any moves which it will store and repeat when needed.

KISMET is a robot developed by the MIT. Capable of displaying the range of human emotions such as surprise, anger happiness etc, this robot can be taught likes and dislikes.

What the future holds for us?Collective Wisdom of robots

today equal to that of a cockroach.

It would take centuries to program the understanding level of just a 2 year old.

Robots lack common sense they cannot prioritize which problem is bigger.

Humans may have chips embedded directly in their brain tomake them smarter faster etc.

Our daily essential may become smart like our jacket may become our doctor keeping tracking of our vitals.

The most Intriguing concept of all being MIND TRANSFER OR MIND UPLOADING.

In Conclusion..

We may see a future where humans and robots alike work together sharing the same workspace helping each other out.

Introduction of AI in robotics is a major milestone by our Engineers and if treaded carefully our lives will take a turn for the better and things that plague us today will become history of tomorrow.

THANK YOU !!
