2017 ANNUAL REPORT2
THE YEAR IN REVIEWCelebrating 20 years of women supporting communities, and communities supporting women
In October of 1997, after a public campaign and an incredible demonstration of community support, the new Women’s Centre of Calgary opened its doors to any woman who wished to walk through them. A bare-bones room with three telephones laid the foundation for the Centre we are today. Back then it would have been impossible to predict the bustling space we would grow into. But grow we did, and in 2017 we celebrated our 20th anniversary as an organization working for women in Calgary.
With new and familiar services for a diverse community of women, our anniversary year gave us many reasons to celebrate. We have recorded growth in the number of women coming to the Centre almost every year since we opened our doors, and 2017 was no
exception. In 2017 our community of women grew, and our programs and services grew with it. 9,006 individuals came to, called, or emailed the Centre last year -- 957 more women than the year before, or an increase of 12%.
We began our 20th year with the addition of three new ways for women to connect with others in our space. Our new Artist in Residence program saw us partner with four talented artists or groups who showcased their vibrant work at the Centre throughout the year.
Our new Environmental Issues Discussions kicked off with a bang, when over 90 women filled our workshop space to attend “Women and Climate Change,” a presentation led by
2017 ANNUAL REPORT3
the Pembina Institute. Finally, our new Child Minding program allowed women to attend workshops, access services, and connect with other women while their children were cared for by trained child minding volunteers.
In 2017 we continued to be a safe space where women could meet their basic needs, and our programs and services were delivered by over 700 wonderful volunteers.
With this leadership and support, we continued to provide opportunities for women to get assistance, by connecting women and their families with food, personal care items, and referrals to community services.
We doubled the size of our tax program, and 1,522 women were able to get assistance with filing their tax returns. Our Legal Advice Clinics continued to see high demand, and with the support of the Alberta Law Foundation we responded with the addition of day-time legal appointments and a Notary Public Clinic.
We added new workshops to our roster and continued to run old favourites. Workshops like Car Maintenance and Anti-Racism in YYC were booked solid within days of their announcement, while others, like Colouring Night remained a relaxed opportunity for women to drop in and connect when it suited them.
With the support of our funders City of Calgary FCSS and the Status of Women Alberta, 2017 saw us grow our Girl Programs exponentially. We were thrilled to launch Girl Up, and Girl Force, two leadership and activism programs for girls. Girl Force, for grades 7-9 girls, launched with a summer camp in July, and was followed by the start of an after school program in September.
Girl Up, for grades 10-12 girls, launched in January 2017. Girls from every quadrant of the city gathered at the Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, to build community and connect with one another. Girls honed their leadership skills with activities that included
launching a blog about representation in school curriculum, leading a feminist walking tour, and developing a weekend leadership conference made for girls, by girls.
Our Social Issues Committee organized issues discussions, adding a gender-lens to topics like women in politics, women in work, food security, and many others.
Early in 2017, we developed a position statement supporting basic income, and became a contributing member to Basic Income Calgary, a growing city-wide group of basic income advocates. We worked with partner organizations on a letter writing campaign to raise awareness around social assistance rates in Alberta. Our work to add a gender lens to public policy discussion and development expanded and evolved with Alberta’s dynamic policy landscape.
While we looked back at years gone by in 2017, we also looked forward, continuing our work to build a city where the experiences of women are included in the decision-making process.
The accomplishments of our past year, and our past 20 years, would not have been possible without our incredible community supporters, and the tireless contributions of our volunteers.
The continued support of our major funders City of Calgary FCSS and United Way of Calgary have been vital in our work to be a space for every woman. The 815 individual donors, community groups, foundations and businesses who supported the Centre in 2017 helped us continue to grow into the community we are today.
Finally, thank you to our amazing community of women, past and present for making the past year, and the past 20 years, so incredible. We are so excited to see what the next 20 have in store.

2017 ANNUAL REPORT6
At the Women’s Centre, we know women are leaders. We apply a capabilities approach to all of our work, which means we operate from the understanding that every woman has strengths, and every woman has something to contribute. Yet women’s leadership is not always recognized, and barriers still exist to women’s full participation in society.
This is why in January 2018 we launched Women Lead YYC, a leadership program for women. Our goal was to create a space where women could learn together, build their networks, and work on issues that are important to them.
As we worked to develop Women Lead YYC, we prepared to welcome 10, maybe 12 women to our community to work on honing their leadership skills. But when we announced the launch of the program, we were overwhelmed by the level of interest in the community! Our inboxes were inundated by women looking to participate, facilitate, and volunteer for the program – our first indicator that women are eager to be a part of leadership programming made specifically for them. We accepted as many applications as we could, and assembled a cohort of 22 diverse and energetic women for the inaugural session of Women Lead YYC. The group came together six times on Monday evenings during winter months, with women
building their capacity as leaders by working on practical skills likes community organizing, effective communications, and connecting with allies.
Bonded together by a shared interest in supporting one another, and working to improve their communities, Monday evenings became a special time for every woman involved in the program. One participant captured the feeling in the room when she said “being in that circle of diverse women was truly inspiring. Every Monday I listened and learned about the various paths these incredible women are pursuing to advance their work, themselves, and each-other.”
In spite of all the content covered and connections made, Women Lead YYC participants were hungry for more, and six weeks flew by. Our group left the program feeling connected and inspired, with a clear reminder of how strong women are when they work together, support one another, and add their voices to the conversation.
Thanks to the support of the Status of Women Alberta, we will be running an expanded version of Women Lead YYC two more times, once in the Spring of 2018, and again in January of 2019. We can’t wait to see what shape each diverse cohort of women will take, and are excited to welcome the perspectives and experiences of these groups into our community of women working for change.

Growing our Girls Programs: new opportunities and new age groups
2017 was a year of incredible growth for our Girls Programs at the Women’s Centre. For years we have offered our Girl Power After School program, a free program for girls in grades five and six to build their capacity as leaders, and connect with one another in a safe and supportive space.
Girls come to Girl Power to explore issues like gender, body image, and activism, while developing strong friendships with one another. But girls in our community have told us they wanted more opportunities to work on issues that matter to them, and in 2017 we were able to answer those requests with the introduction of new programs and new events. In 2017 we added Girl Force, for girls going into grades 7 to 9, Girl Up, for girls going into grades 10 to 12, and early in 2018 we ran our first ever Girl Connect conference, a conference developed by high school girls, for girls in grades 5 to 9.
We have dreamed for a long time of running a day-long conference for girls, but in 2017 we took this dream one step further, by supporting a group of dedicated high school aged girls to take a lead in planning this event. We asked participants of our Girl Up program the question “if there was a conference made just for girls, what would it look like,” and our Girl Up group ran with the idea.
Our brainstorming sessions started with a few questions for our group – we asked “what would you have wanted to do at a conference when you were younger? What issues would you have liked to explore?” From this we settled on three important topics: conflict, self care and confidence. When the day of the conference finally arrived, the Women’s Centre was filled with the sound of excited
reunions. Girls who hadn’t seen each other since Girl Power summer camps were rekindling friendships that had dulled over the fall and winter months. As the day went on, participants connected with other girls of all ages, destroyed stereotype boxes, worked on crafts, played drama games and enjoyed the safer, girl-friendly space they were creating together.
In addition to a successful conference, we continued to run our Girl Power After School Program and summer camps, and we welcomed new faces to the Centre for our new Girl Force and Girl Up evening and summer programs. Our new Girl Force program runs every Tuesday evening. Girls share a light meal together, and chat about everything from celebrities, to creating safer spaces for LGBTQA + folks at school. After that girls participate in more structured conversations on various topics. To date we have explored dress codes, how to “take up space,” how to involve male allies in the fight for equality, and so much more.
High school aged girls in Girl Up were eager to make their voices heard during the program’s first year, and girl always came through our doors ready to talk about the ways issues like sexism and racism impact the lives of girls, while addressing strategies to address them at a local level.
Our year of incredible growth would not have been possible without the support of the City of Calgary FCSS and the Status of Women Alberta, and we can’t wait to see what will come next for our Girls Programs. We look forward to hearing more about which issues matters most to girls in our community, are excited for another year of more leadership, more activism, and more power!

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR VOLUNTERS
We would not be celebrating 20 years of women helping women without the hundreds of volunteers who give their time, energy and skills to be a part of our community every year. In 2017, we had over 700 reasons to celebrate, in the form of the over 700 volunteers who delivered and supported our programs and services.
The roles and responsibilities carried out by our volunteers are varied, and our capabilities approach means we work to provide all of our volunteers with opportunities to use, and build on their own strengths. Our volunteer program is unique, because women who access our services also have the opportunity to give back when they are able. Whether it’s making sure a pot of hot coffee is always on, or conducting research for our Social Policy Committee, every act makes a difference.
Ensuring various volunteer opportunities are available for women means there are ways for women to build a sense of ownership and empowerment as engaged community members.Whether they are raising funds for the Centre by volunteering as ushers at football
games, sorting and organizing endless boxes of produce for our food programs, or connecting with the over 9,000 women who visited the Centre last year, our volunteers are part of what makes the Women’s Centre such a unique organization.
Our volunteers are a diverse group. 23% of our 2017 volunteers identified as visible minorities, while 19% identified as immigrants. We know some of our volunteers give their time in spite of incredible challenges. 35% of our 2017 volunteers identified they have experienced, or are experiencing poverty, and 20% of have raised, or were raising children as a single parent.
No matter who they are or what their volunteer role is, one thing all of our volunteers share is their deep dedication and commitment to the Women’s Centre’s community. So to our volunteers, thank you! Whether you have volunteered with us for two hours, or 20 years, your contribution makes a difference in the lives of women, and we would not be where we are today without you.

2017 ANNUAL REPORT20
39 - 4th St N.E.Calgary AB T2E 3R6
403-264-1155www.womenscentrecalgary.org
“The Women’s Centre is a place where I get to know other women in my neighbourhood and community. Being a part of the community means seeing friendly and familiar faces wherever I go in Calgary. Being a part of the Women’s Centre means working together and feeling like you belong, not only at the Centre but in Calgary as a whole.”
“I appreciate very much the acceptance of my needs and the non-judgemental attitudes shown to me each time I am here. I feel like I can accomplish anything with positive guidance I get at the Women’s Centre.”
“The Women’s Centre makes the community safer by providing a space for women. It is an inclusive, supportive space where women from all walks of life can find dignity, community and belonging.”
