IE Business School MIM program Essay Presentation-Ankit Loya

If you had the opportunity, what actions would you demand of the United Nations Secretary General

and why?

1. Reform within the UN with respect to the structure of Security Council and use of vetoes

• This primarily is for Strengthening of the powers of the United Nations General Assembly with reform in the basic structure of Security council

• It needs to be more flexible as the structure is rigid• With the change in security council the Scenario

would have been difficult in many cases Example Syria Conflict

• Would Syria conflict have happened if the veto wasn't in place ? Nope.

• The mandated intervention would have taken place and it may have stopped the Bashar Al Assad's government.

2. Acceptance of Taiwan's application to the UN

• Taiwan has been applying for the UN membership from 1971 and has been denied because it is considered part of china

• Its not given the membership majorly due to the intervention of china and its application is being rejected as the china being among the 5 nations having Veto and they used there Veto against the membership of Taiwan

• Would like the United Nations General Secretary to take up the matter in the United Nations General Assembly for a vote so as to lend it at least a status of observer entity if not observer state.

• The general secretary should initially introduce the discussion on Taiwan as a status observer in the council and later on, on the basis of the discussion there should be voting done for the same

3.Bring up the UN Military concept

• Firstly bringing up the United nations Military concept

• Once the concept is bought up there it should be discussed as a concept

• The basic need of UN military is to explain and if needed should be drafted so all the members can refer and there by hold a discussion

• The major concept would be dealing with peace keeping and when there is injustice or violation of code of conduct being observed the UN Military would play predefined roles

• The UN General secretary and the UN council as a whole needs to take a decision if nation a nation violates

4. Stemming Corruption within the United Nations

• The UN is being blamed for being the hot bed of corruption

• The UN does not issue clear reports to donor nations on how their money is spent.

• The U.N. in some cases uses U.S. money to actively undermine American values and interests. For instance: Procurement of dual-use technology for Iran and North Korea by the UN’s World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva

• So the UN should try and eradicate all the allegations of corruption raised against it

• There should be a anti corruption team formed which would look after the corruption in the UN

• The Corruption should be cut from grass root level and hence there should regular raids when there is a sense of corruption felt

• It should change its policy and issue clear reports to all the donor countries

5.Changing the erroneous UN Charter clauses, phrases and words

• The United Nations should do few elementary changes at the earliest with regards to few clauses, phases and words.

• Simple things like removing 'enemy states' and mentions of 'USSR' should be done at the earliest.

• This changes are to be done because it tampers the peace and replacement with better or evolved phases and words would help in a large way in peace keeping.

So If I had the opportunity, I would demand all the mentioned action in the Presentation to the United Nations Secretary General for a better and peaceful world and United Nations.
