Common Core

Primary source- A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event.

◦ ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS (excerpts or translations acceptable): Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records 

◦ CREATIVE WORKS: Poetry, drama, novels, music, art  ◦ RELICS OR ARTIFACTS: Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings

Secondary Source- A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them.

Check out the side bar. Under “Classroom Materials”, there are primary source sets and lesson plans. Under “Using Primary Sources”, there are Teacher’s Guides and Analysis Tools for different source formats and you can create your own (Analysis Tool for Students).

How I used this with students…

I created a wiki and inserted collections of hyperlinks from Livebinder, which students used for a collaborative project between the library and social studies (works best using Firefox browser). Students completed two graphic organizers for the project, one of them a Venn diagram.
