Leader of Brady Group Gloats About Coming Gun Ban
“Proposals”
Gunlaws.com
PHOENIX, AZ --(Ammoland.com)- Paul Helmke, ringleader of the
aggressive Brady Anti-Gun gang, released this statement about the
“bipartisan” gun-control meeting the White House scheduled.
(Note: The “White House” is a building and can’t do anything; the
person responsible in that building remains unidentified but appears to
be Steve Croley) The meeting only included people who want to ban
guns, an indicator of the plans, according to unidentifiable experts.
“On Tuesday, I attended a meeting at the U.S. Department of
Justice with representatives from the White House, the Vice-
President’s office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms
and Explosives (ATF), the FBI, and others from the Obama
Administration, along with leaders from the gun violence
prevention movement, to discuss how to reach the goals
outlined in the President’s statement. Officials from the
Administration indicated that this was the first of what they
hoped would be a series of discussions. They said they had
not settled on, or excluded, any relevant proposals.
“I began the discussion by listing basic measures that the
Brady Campaign, and others, felt could make a difference.
The list included: a strong background check system, with
good and complete records of dangerous and irresponsible
people, applicable to all commercial gun sales; more tools for
law enforcement to stop trafficking in illegal guns; increasing
the number and type of military-style weapons, including
“assault clips,” that should not be readily available to
civilians, like machine-guns and fully automatic weapons.
Administration officials then asked questions. My colleagues
and I gave examples and arguments for legislative,
administrative, and voluntary policies that could help reduce
the bloodshed.
“The meeting lasted more than 90 minutes. Having this many
Administration representatives spend this much time on this
initial meeting signaled to me that the president is serious.
He wants to do something meaningful about gun violence.
After meeting with others, including law enforcement and
“gun rights” groups [note: no such meetings are known to
have been held], Obama’s representatives will be presenting
specific proposals. We hope those will include all the “sound
and effective steps” that the president called for in his
statement.”
No word has leaked on what or how the anti-rights leaders will attempt
to implement their programs. Rumors are swirling that every effort will
be made to avoid going through Congress, since it is well recognized that
the peoples’ representatives there will not tolerate rights denial
programs. Avoiding Congress would be a travesty bordering on treason,
but since it is just one of many such moves, objections might be slight,
and arrests of the perpetrators seem unlikely.
One leading gun-rights advocate, who was not invited to the “open”
discussions, opined, “A seat at the table would be good, but only if used
to present reasonable ideas — gun curricula, self-defense protections,
justice for civil-rights violators (just injecting civil rights into the
lexicon would be good), gun-free zones vs. make-believe gun-free zones,
the debilitating effects of hoplophobia and failure to recognize or treat
the sufferers, and have the antis dismiss such common-sense measures;
also a chance to stand against the anti-rights movement and cast them
as such. I’m not sure which gun-rights leader is best suited to that. I’d
love to have a crack at it, but I wasn’t invited.” An opportunity to do any
of that was considered unlikely.
There are serious issues American gun owners want discussed, such as
restoration of rights, national concealed-carry reciprocity, cracking down
on states like New Jersey, New York and California that routinely violate
gun owners rights, lifting the administration’s ban on importation of
historic WWII-era rifles, reining in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives, especially the Phoenix office and its Fast and
Furious and GunWalker operations, and the nomination of anti-gun
rights Andrew Traver to head BATFE.
Plans to strip Americans of their guns, either in whole cloth

Legal Action Wins Court OrderForcing LAPD to Make CCWPolicies AvailableJUN 10, 2011 05:24P.M.
NRA / CRPAF Legal Action Wins Court Order Forcing LAPD to
Make CCW Policies Available at Stations and on LAPD Website
CalGunLaws.com
San Diego, CA --(Ammoland.com)- On Thursday, June 9, 2011, Los
Angeles Superior Court Judge Terry Green granted a motion in the NRA
and CRPA Foundation financed case against the City of Los Angeles
regarding the LAPD’s concealed weapons permit (CCW) processing and
issuance policies.
The motion was brought to force LAPD to comply with a 16-year-old
Consent Judgment from the 1995 Assenza v. City of Los Angeles case.
For years, LAPD has repeatedly sought to avoid its obligations under the
judgment and to keep people in the dark about what it takes to get a
CCW in the City of L.A.
The City unsuccessfully opposed the motion.
Under Penal Code § 12050, the LAPD has an obligation to process
applications for CCWs, and to issue CCWs if the applicant has “good
cause.” For many years, the City and the LAPD had a policy of not
making CCW applications available, never finding good cause to exist,
and effectively prohibiting the issuance of any CCWs. The City’s unlawful
refusal to properly process CCW applications and issue CCWs was
challenged in two lawsuits in 1992 and 1994. To settle the suits the LAPD
agreed to be bound by a Judgment requiring that all citizens who request
a CCW permit application could get one at any LAPD station house, that
the application would be accompanied by a written copy of the LAPD’s
procedure for handling the application, including the factors used to
determine whether an applicant has ”good cause” for the CCW, and that
applicants would be informed of the procedures for appealing the denial
of a CCW application. The settlementalso established a Citizens Advisory
Review Panel, made up of appointed citizens who would review CCW
applications denied by the LAPD and make recommendations regarding
whether the LAPD should reverse its denial of the CCW application.
The LAPD has repeatedly failed to honor its legal obligations under the
Judgment. The LAPD stopped making CCW applications and a written
copy of the CCW policy and appeal process available at all station houses.
And the LAPD is ignoring the recommendations of the Citizens Advisory
Review Panel and has instead enacted a de facto policy of again issuing
no CCWs, despite whatever showing of good cause the applicants might
make.
The motion heard on Thursday sought, among other things, to force the
LAPD to make CCW applications and copies of its written policy
available at each station house as the judgment requires. To support the
motion, NRA grassroots activists were recruited to investigate the
LAPD’s CCW practices. They were frustrated by uncooperative officers at
individual LAPD station houses. The officers had no understanding of
the LAPD’s application process and, in almost all instances, could not
provide a CCW application to the requesting citizen, much less a copy of
the LAPD’s written court ordered policy. LAPD officers bluntly told
citizens that unless they were celebrities, they shouldn’t even bother
filling out the CCW application because they would be denied a CCW as a
matter of LAPD policy. These NRA activist witnesses signed declarations
about their frustrated attempts to get CCW applications, which were
submitted with the motion to force LAPD to comply with the 16-year-old
Judgment.
In granting the motion and ruling against the city, the Court ordered the
City to provide contact information for CCW applicants to the plaintiffs’
lawyers, to get sworn declarations signed under penalty of perjury from
every Commanding Officer at each of the LAPD’s 21 station houses and
precincts confirming their compliance with the terms of the Assenza
judgment and indicating what affirmative steps were taken to ensure
compliance, and to prominently post a CCW link on the LAPD website so
the public can easily access both the CCW application and the LAPD
CCW policy. LAPD must comply with this Order by Wednesday,

September 7, 2011.
A memorandum discussing the suits and their history is posted here.
So in a city with almost 4 million citizens, with some 300 CCW
applications being made per year, LAPD has only granted 24 active
CCWs. Citizens who have had credible and ongoing threats made against
them and their families, and those who carry large sums of cash as part
of job and are high-profile robbery targets, have been repeatedly denied
CCWs despite meeting the “good cause” criteria for receiving CCWs that
the LAPD was forced to agree to years ago.
To rectify this situation, two new legal actions are being pursued. The
first is the motion to enforce Judgment in the Assenza v. City of Los
Angeles case discussed above.
The second action is a new lawsuit, Davis v. City of Los Angeles. The nine
plaintiffs in this new action, some of whom have had CCW applications
pending and unresolved with the LAPD for years, have submitted sworn
declarations attesting to a litany of missteps and abuses by LAPD in its
handling of their CCW applications. These abuses include not only the
failures to provide applications and copies of the written policies at
stationhouses, but refusals to timely consider their applications, failures
to respond to inquiries regarding the status of applications, failures to
acknowledge the availability of the Citizens Advisory Review Panel as a
method of appealing denial, and the failure to give any weight to
recommendations by the Citizens Advisory Review Panel.
Second Amendment challenges may be incorporated into these lawsuits
as the case law develops in the Ninth Circuit, where another
NRA/CRPAF LAP case, Peruta v. San Diego, is currently being heard.
Seventeen years ago the NRA and CRPA joined forces to fight local gun
bans being written and pushed in California by the gun ban lobby. Their
coordinated efforts became the NRA/CRPA “Local Ordinance Project”
(LOP) – a statewide campaign to fight ill conceived local efforts at gun
control and educate politicians about available programs that are
effective in reducing accidents and violence without infringing on the
rights of law-abiding gun owners. The NRA/CRPA LOP has had
tremendous success in beating back most of these anti-self-defense
proposals.
In addition to fighting local gun bans, for decades the NRA has been
litigating dozens of cases in California courts to promote the right to self-
defense and the Second Amendment. In the post Heller and McDonald
legal environment, NRA and CRPA Foundation have formed the
NRA/CRPA Foundation Legal Action Project (LAP), a joint venture to
pro-actively strike down ill-conceived gun control laws and ordinances
and advance the rights of firearms owners, specifically in California.
Sometimes, success is more likely when LAP’s litigation efforts are kept
low profile, so the details of every lawsuit are not always released. To see
a partial list of the LAP’s recent accomplishments, or to contribute to the
NRA or to the NRA / CRPAF LAP and support this and similar Second
Amendment cases, visit www.nraila.com and www.crpafoundation.org.

Official Corruption in the Obama Administration’s Gun
Runner Scandal
About to Take Center Stage – It’s now time to defund Project
Gunrunner!
Gun Owners of America
Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- A story that Gun Owners of
America has been following over the past several months is ready to
explode next week in the news.
If you have been reading our articles on AmmoLand or reading our
newsletter, The Gun Owners, or watching our videos on the GOA
website, you know what Project Gunrunner is all about. It refers to an
operation where the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives
(ATF) was working with gun shops, approving firearms purchases to
buyers who were suspected smugglers.
While this scandalous activity remained hidden for some time, it really

went viral in the news media after one of the guns sold to a smuggler was
later used to murder Border Patrol agent Brian Terry in December.
Since then, GOA has been lobbying the Congress to hold Congressional
hearings to investigate the corruption in the Obama administration,
specifically in relation to Project Gunrunner. GOA has corresponded
with President Obama on this issue and has asked it members several
times to urge their legislators to call for hearings themselves.
Well, there is good news to report. Beginning next week, the House of
Representatives is set to commence hearings into Project Gunrunner —
which also goes by the names of Project Gunwalker or Fast and Furious.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) is the point man leading the investigation on
the House side. His hearings are sure to reveal much new information,
but even so, he has already discovered quite a bit.
Project Gunrunner “was authorized at the highest level,” Issa told a radio
audience this past Tuesday. “This decision was made at least by people in
the Office of Attorney General Holder.”
This underscores the tremendous hypocrisy and antagonism against gun
owners on part of the Obama Administration. After all, officials (like the
President) were blaming American gun stores for letting firearms slip
into gun smugglers’ hands and, thus, fueling much of Mexico’s violence.
But all the while, the administration was quietly approving the sales of
those firearms to those very same gun smugglers.
“[The ATF] apparently did this,” said GOA Executive Director
Larry Pratt in his letter to the President, “in part, so it could
push gun control in Congress by demonstrating that guns
used in Mexican violence came from the United States.”
ACTION: Please urge your Representative to closely follow the
upcoming hearings into Project Gunrunner. Tell them that it is
unconscionable for Congress to be funding a program that allows the
Obama Administration:
1. To put guns into the hands of suspected gun smugglers; and then,
2. To turn around and blame law-abiding gun owners for the
problem!
Project Gunrunner needs to be defunded IMMEDIATELY!

enjoys shooting his Benelli M2 with an XRAIL magazine extension
system attached, which permits him to employ 21 rounds in a rotating
magazine configuration.
Competing in the shooting sports since 1974, Holmes has proven himself
to be a top competitor in a variety of shooting disciplines, including
pistol, rifle and shotgun. Coached as a youngster by his police officer
father who was a serious competitor in Practical Pistol Competitions
(PPC), Homes began competing in NRA High-power, Small-bore Rifle
matches and later in PPC.
His first national match was a Second Chance Bowling Pin Shoot in
1983, and he’s never looked back.

In the late 1980s Holmes began shooting in 3-gun matches, which he
liked for the inclusion of three different types of guns. Although Homes
shoots in a variety of competitive disciplines, including ISPCA, Masters,
Bullseye, PPC, Action Pistol and Long-Range Silhouette Rifle, 3-gun
remains his favorite.
Among his distinctions, Holmes is the 2003 World 3-Gun Champion and
2-time US National Combat Shotgun Champion just to name a few from
a long list of competitive achievements.
“I attend many matches all around the country, and I live,
breathe, eat & sleep thinking about my next match.” Holmes
said. “And as such, I rely heavily on the flawless performance
of my Benelli M2, which has become my primary “go-to”
shotgun.”

Guns in the Media – This Week on Gun Talk Radio
Gun Talk Radio
MANDEVILLE, LA --(Ammoland.com)- Fact-checked, unbiased,
honest news is sometimes hard to find in today’s world. Tom speaks with
two writers about media bias against firearms, this Sunday on Tom
Gresham’s Gun Talk (R) Radio, the nationally-syndicated radio talk
show about guns and the shooting sports.
Kevin D. Williamson writes for the National Review – “America’s most
widely read and influential magazine and website for
Republican/conservative news, commentary and opinion”.
Williamson recently wrote an article discussing the misconception of
how easy it is to obtain a “fully automatic assault rifle”. He’s visits Gun
Talk to talk about how wrong some in the media get it, and possible
motives behind such reporting. More info can be found at
www.nationalreview.com.
Also on Gun Talk this week, Chad Baus, Vice Chairman of Ohio’s
Buckeye Firearms Association. In his most recent online article on
www.buckeyefirearms.org, Baus examines a three-part series of articles
titled “Overrun by Guns”, published last week in The Columbus
Dispatch. The problem Baus and many others have with these articles
written by a Dispatch journalist is that they were paid for – and paid for
by The Joyce Foundation, a notorious anti-gun rights organization.

SMYRNA, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Team GLOCK continued their top
finishing season at they competed in the USPSA Double Tap
Championships, held June 3-5, in Wichita Falls, TX and the World Class
Speed on Steel 2011, held June 3-4, in Old Bridge, NJ.
Randi Rogers, who represented the team at the USPSA Double Tap,
finished as Ladies Limited Division champion and 25th overall.
Tori Nonaka, who competed in the Speed on Steel, placed tenth in the
Iron Sight Centerfire division and 14th in the Open Centerfire.
Rogers performance at the Double Tap Championships put her against a
deep field of world champions, where she was faced with stages such as
the “Sea Serpent.” This particular stage required the competitors to hit
14 paper targets for a possible 140 points. Rogers shot the stage in 20.15
seconds and scored 131 out of the 140 points.
A challenging stage, the competitor must begin at the front of a
rectangular shooting area and maneuver backward to engage targets
while keeping the muzzle pointed down range. In addition while moving
backward the competitor must also duck below an arch built to resemble
a giant sea serpent.
“For my first Double Tap competition, I was very pleased
with my overall placement,” stated Rogers. “Transitioning
between the very accuracy intensive Bianchi Cup to the speed
focused Double Tap was a challenge, but I was very happy
with the outcome of the match.” Rogers competed with a
GLOCK 35, .40, built by S&J Custom.
Tori Nonaka, who competed for Team GLOCK at the World Class Steel
Speed on Steel, shot in both the Iron Sight Centerfire, placing tenth
overall and the Open Centerfire Divisions placing 14th overall.
“I looked forward to this match all year, and was very pleased
with my performance,” stated Nonaka. “This exciting
variation of the Steel Challenge will definitely help me to
prepare for the world championship in August.” Nonaka
competed with both a GLOCK 34, 9×19, built by S&J Custom
and a GLOCK 17 Open Steel Gun built by Hatfield’s
Gunsmithing.
Dave Sevigny will next compete in The Steel Challenge West Coast
Regional in Piru, CA, June 17-19. The same weekend Randi Rogers and
Tori Nonaka will be at the IDPA Carolina Cup in Oxford, NC.

Southwick Associates Honored for Groundbreaking Shooting
Sports Research
Southwick Associates
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fl --(Ammoland.com)- Research
organization Southwick Associates was honored this week by the
National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) for their groundbreaking
research that has helped government agencies, businesses and
organizations better understand and serve the needs and habits of people
who enjoy the outdoors.
The presentation was made by Jim Curcuruto, NSSF’s Director of
Industry Research, during the organization’s annual Shooting Sports
Summit. This year the event was held in Louisville, Ky., June 8-9.
The NSSF is the trade association for the firearms and ammunition
industry and the Summit was an opportunity for leaders of the industry
and conservation fields to discuss issues that affect the future of hunting
and recreational shooting. This year a key topic of discussion revolved
around the findings of a new joint research project by Southwick
Associates and Responsive Management. The project focused on the
activities that compete with hunting and target shooting.
“The awards are well deserved. NSSF research would not be

where it is today without them,” said Curcuruto, in
presenting the two businesses with hand-carved walnut
wildlife statues.
Accepting the award on behalf of Southwick Associates was company
founder and owner, Rob Southwick. Southwick founded the company in
1990 and for the past 21 years has been the leader in evaluating the
economics, statistics and market evaluations for the hunting, angling and
shooting sports industries. Southwick Associates has a long and
distinguished history of conducting groundbreaking research on behalf
of most of the state wildlife agencies and industry associations to help
them understand outdoor enthusiasts and create programs that better
serve the public. Their work has directly led to agencies improving their
license structures and pricing. The firm has also worked extensively with
private businesses involved in the outdoor industry to help them better
understand their markets and help improve products and services for
their consumers.
“Helping develop the NSSF’s trade statistics program has
been professionally rewarding and fun,” said Southwick in
receiving the honor. “The NSSF has provided us the support
needed to develop new research tools that help companies
boost profits and increase hunting and shooting sports
participation. We are sincerely grateful to the NSSF for its
recognition and for the opportunity to serve the industry.”
Key projects that Southwick Associates has conducted in conjunction
with NSSF have included developing the first index of hunting license
sales, tracking shooting range activities and trends, generating the first
estimates of lifetime expenditures expected from new hunters and target
shooters and conducting the first ever annual survey of firearms retailers
to identify trends. Last year, the company conducted a groundbreaking
study that identified hunter churn rates and described their lifestyles.
NSSF expects the findings to help guide recruitment and
retention efforts for many years to come.
About Southwick Associates:
Southwick Associates was founded in 1989 to serve state fish and wildlife
agencies, as well as the sportfishing and hunting industries. We
specialize in economic and business statistics related to fish and wildlife.
Our expertise includes measuring retail expenditures by anglers,
hunters, wildlife viewers and other outdoor recreationists; quantifying
the jobs, tax revenues and other economic impacts of outdoor recreation;

Niagara County Legislature Unanimously Opposes
Microstamping Bill in NYS Legislature
AmmoLand Gun News
Niagara County, NY --(Ammoland.com)- Niagara County lawmakers
unanimously opposed an extreme bill passed by the New York State
Assembly that would require gun-buyers in New York state to purchase
guns the included costly technology that had been repeatedly proven
unreliable at best.
County lawmakers expressed disgust with grandstanding by the State
Assembly’s leadership, which every year passes a raft of anti-Second
Amendment bills, most of which are stopped cold in the Senate. The
Assembly’s passage of a bizarre “micro-stamping” bill- long the darling
of extreme gun-control organizations- caused a pair of lawmakers
representing four of Niagara County’s rural towns to lead an effort to
condemn the Assembly’s actions and call on the Senate to block its
passage.
Micro-stamping would, in theory, imprint a unique identification
number on cartridges ejected by semiautomatic pistols. Unfortunately
for proponents of the concept, it’s been repeatedly found to work poorly
at best- even being proven ineffective during an involved 2006 study at
the University of California-Davis. With even a University of California
school opposing mandating the technology, Niagara County lawmakers
were left scratching their heads about why the Assembly is in such a
hurry to require the unproven and costly technology in New York.
For that reason, Tuesday night county legislators were unanimous in
admonishing the Assembly’s leadership for passing the legislation and
asking the Senate to once again act as a road block against extreme laws,
often authored by downstate Assemblymen.
“Again, it seems the assault has started with the anti-Second
Amendment rights legislation originating in the Assembly,”
Legislator John Syracuse, R-Newfane, told his colleagues.
“What we have here is this micro-stamping- I hesitate to use

the word ‘technology’- that has repeatedly failed in laboratory
tests. And now the Assembly wants to require it.”
Syracuse noted that chief among the problems with micro-stamping
-aside from the fact that a similar experiment at a Suffolk County, N.Y.,
crime lab had found that virtually all of the stamped characters were
unreadable- and that a criminal with a metal file could render the
technology impotent.
“They’re easily scoured or tampered with,” Syracuse said. “All
this does is erode the rights of law-abiding citizens to
purchase guns. And we won’t tolerate this back-door effort at
gun control.”
Syracuse was joined in sponsoring the measure blasting the Assembly by
Legislator Michael A. Hill, R-Middleport, a parole officer who was
concerned about efforts by criminals to misuse micro-stamped
ammunition casings fired by law-abiding firearms owners- particularly
his fellow law-enforcement officers.
“The problem with the technology is that there may be an
opportunity that, if this actually worked, people could
become victims of false accusations,” Hill said. “As a law-
enforcement officer myself, I go to the range twice a year to
qualify, and we use quite a few cartridges, and they’re all over
the range. We do our best to pick them up. But we don’t get
them all. And these ranges would be a popular place for
criminals to go to pick up casings to scatter around a crime
scene to add to confusion.”
Hill’s specific objection has been repeatedly cited by the National Rifle
Association as well.
Hill, who as a law-enforcement officer is quite knowledgeable about
firearms, noted a second failing of micro-stamping: it only is applicable
to semiautomatic pistols. Micro-stamping would be ineffective on
revolvers, as the expended cartridges remain in the gun.
“Old West-type guns- revolvers -don’t even eject their rounds.
If they used a gun in that category to commit a crime, they’re
going to take the cartridges with them,” Hill said. “That
nullifies the effectiveness of this technology.”
Further complicating things, Hill and Syracuse noted, is that the
Assembly bill requires creation of a statewide database of unique bullet
IDs, but fails to explain how construction, updating, and maintenance of
such a costly database would be paid for.
“I know that databases cost money to create. Databases cost
money to maintain,” Hill said. “The Assembly doesn’t say
where that money is going to come from.”
Hill summed up the County Legislature’s opposition to the Assembly
micro-stamping bill on behalf of his colleagues.
“There are just a lot of holes in it,” Hill said. “The Assembly
leadership is talking about adding an expense to law-
enforcement for a technology that’s not proven, and that can
be scrubbed right out of a handgun. And I just think it’s
another attack on our Second Amendment rights.”

Michigan Natural Resources Commission Votes to Lift Deer Baiting Ban
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The Michigan Natural Resources
Commission on Thursday voted 4-3 to lift the current deer baiting and
feeding ban in the state’s Lower Peninsula.

The ban had been in place since 2008, when Chronic Wasting Disease
(CWD) was detected in a deer at a private deer breeding facility in Kent
County.
Baiting will still be prohibited in Deer Management Unit (DMU) 487, the
six-county Bovine Tuberculosis zone in northeastern Lower Michigan.
The counties where baiting will continue to be prohibited are Alcona,
Alpena, Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda and Presque Isle.
The NRC approved a proposal to allow baiting in limited quantities from
Oct. 1 to Jan. 1. Hunters may place any type of bait, no more than two
gallons at a time, across a 10-foot by 10-foot area per hunting location.
The NRC also reinstated recreational feeding of deer in the Lower
Peninsula, with the exception of DMU 487. Property owners may place
two gallons of bait on their property within 100 yards of their residence
year-around.
The NRC also placed a three-year sunset on the regulations, which
means it will reconsider the baiting issue again in 2014.
In 2008, the Department of Natural Resources announced it had
detected the state’s first case of CWD in a three year-old female deer at a
private deer breeding facility in Kent County. At the time, the
Department followed protocol as outlined in the state’s emergency
response plan for CWD and immediately banned baiting and feeding of
white-tailed deer in the Lower Peninsula. The NRC then passed
regulations making the ban permanent, but said it would reconsider the
ban in three years, giving the DNR adequate time to perform disease
testing and surveillance in the state for CWD.
In the three year period, the DNR tested thousands of white-tailed deer
for CWD, but did not detect another case.
The NRC also directed the Department to work with the Legislature to
strengthen the penalties for baiting violations. A potential bill sponsor
has been identified who supports establishing an escalating scale of
penalties for repeat offenders, which would include mandatory hunting
license revocation.
If hunters do use bait, the DNR requests they not place bait repeatedly at
the same point on the ground, and only place bait out when they are
actively hunting. This may minimize the chance of direct and indirect
exposure of deer to any unknown disease that may be present.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the
conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s
natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For

Archery Trade Association Membership Drive Under Way
Archery Trade Association
New Ulm, Minn. --(Ammoland.com)- ATA retail members can renew
their membership now to beat the rush that begins when current 2010-
2011 memberships expire June 30.
As with the 2011 Trade Show in Indianapolis, retailers wishing to attend
the 2012 ATA Trade Show in Columbus, Ohio, must be ATA members.
ATA membership-services staff recently completed their annual review
of memberships, and are mailing out renewal orders for 2011-2012 to
700 “pre-verified” retail members. Members are encouraged to save time
by paying their dues and renewing their memberships online.
They can also pay by mailing back the paperwork with a check, or faxing
it in after completing the “cc” info on the order.
An additional 300 retail members whose commitment ends June 30 will
receive a request for information to become verified and eligible to
renew. These members will not receive a dues order, so they will not be
able to renew online. They must mail or fax the required information for
ATA verification.
Starting this year, all retailers will be part of the “Archery Pro Shop
Retailer” membership category. The ATA Dealers Council decided to
create this one uniform category, and eliminate the former categories:
“Retailer” and “ProShop Retailer.”

Michigan DNR Moves AheadWith Deal to Sell 500 Acres toCommerce Township for ParkJUN 10, 2011 11:47A.M.
Michigan DNR Moves Ahead With Deal to Sell 500 Acres to
Commerce Township for Park
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- A land transaction that would sell 500
acres of state-owned land in Oakland County’s Commerce Township to
the township to develop into a public outdoor recreation facility is
nearing completion, as Department of Natural Resources Director
Rodney Stokes authorized the DNR to move ahead with the deal at the
June 9 meeting of the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.
The two-phase deal includes sale of approximately 502 acres in
Commerce Township to the township for a total of $2.805 million. The
first phase includes sale of a 201.4 acre parcel for $1,282,140, with a
closing to occur before Sept. 15. The second phase includes the sale of
301.3 acres for $1,522,860, with a closing to occur before April 15, 2012.
The transaction is the culmination of a multi-year discussion between
the DNR and Commerce Township about the sale of the land for public
recreation and open space uses. Under the sale agreement reached, the
township agreed to keep the property open to the public for open space,
wildlife habitat and public outdoor education purposes.
The property, known as the Proud Lake Recreation Area – East Unit, was
partially used in the 1950s as a Nike missile base by the US Department
of Defense. Due to its occupation by the Department of Defense, the
property was closed to the public, and not actively managed as part of
the Proud Lake Recreation Area. In 2006, the DNR re-evaluated the
property as a part of its statewide Land Consolidation Strategy, and
recommended that the 502 acres be sold or exchanged.
The property is bisected by Wise Road, which divides it into two distinct
parcels. The north portion is approximately 253 acres and undeveloped.
The south portion is approximately 248 acres, including 72 acres that
contained the former Nike missile site. The former missile silos on the
property have been filled in and the area now consists of open fields.
The sale agreement requires the township to keep the land as open
space, in a generally natural condition, for wildlife habitat and public
outdoor education purposes. The 72-acre former missile site that was
formerly developed can once again be developed to host active outdoor
recreation facilities and fields, tennis or basketball courts or ice rinks.
The property can be used for events, classes, instructional activities,
contests, tournaments or similar events that promote the outdoors. The
agreement also allows Commerce Township to charge fees to offset the
cost of ownership, operation and maintenance of the property.
Proceeds from the sale of the property will go into a restricted fund the
DNR uses to purchase land for public recreation purposes. Priority will
be given to lands within DNR boundaries in state game areas, parks and
recreation areas, and other high quality outdoor recreation land in
southern Michigan. A portion of the proceeds will be used to acquire
replacement lands that meet the criteria for lands acquired with funds
from the state’s Game and Fish Protection Fund.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the
conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s
natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For

Wisconsin DNR Needs Your Help With Game Bird Brood Observations
Wisconsin DNR
MADISON, WI --(Ammoland.com)- The Wisconsin DNR is asking for
your help in measuring the brood production of some of the state’s
upland game bird species.
We are looking for observations of broods of pheasant, wild turkey,
ruffed grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chicken, gray partridge, and
bobwhite quail.
Wisconsinites spend many days outdoors during the summer months,
and see a variety of our state’s abundant wildlife. This makes you a good
source of information on the reproductive status of some of our wildlife
species.
No special effort is required! Just go about your normal summertime
activities, and when you see a brood of young pheasants, turkey, ruffed
grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chicken, gray partridge, or bobwhite
quail, please report your sightings. Instructions on how to perform the
survey, a link to the survey form, and a tally sheet for your use can be
found here.
Also report any sightings of turkey and pheasant hens that do not have
broods.
During the summer of 2010, Wisconsinites reported 950 observations of
game broods of wild turkey, ring-necked pheasant, ruffed grouse, prairie
chicken, sharp-tailed grouse, gray partridge and bobwhite quail. The
most frequently observed game bird species were wild turkey (765
observations) and ruffed grouse (117 observations).
Results from your observations will be used to monitor the reproductive
status of these birds and to help make fall hunting forecasts. If you have
any questions about the survey, or if you have any issues accessing the
survey website please contact Brian Dhuey.
Thank you for your interest in Wisconsin’s wildlife.

biology, vertebrate species and wildlife-habitat relationships, Wisdom
also is a noted leader as these topics relate to disturbance regimes and
anthropogenic risk factors.
Wisdom’s contributions to the science of wildlife management are
extensive. He has been an author or co-author of 364 invited papers and
posters and of 44 offered presentations and posters. Wisdom has 17
formal consultations with scientists both nationally and internationally
regarding use of technologies and methods in ungulate research. He also
has 118 publications to his credit in scientific journals.
“Everyone who has followed professional elk management
since 1986 has heard of the ‘Wisdom Model,’ which was one
of the first definitive attempts to predict habitat
effectiveness,” said Tom Toman, director of conservation and
staff biologist for RMEF.
“Newer modeling efforts are a collaboration of many
biologists but Mike remains one of the leaders and the
objective has never changed: Develop a tool to measure
dietary digestible energy, distance to roads, distance to cover
and slope to help direct habitat enhancement and watershed
restoration work. Mike remains on the cutting edge of these
advanced techniques in elk management.”
Along the way, Wisdom’s efforts also benefit other wildlife species that
prosper in early and mid-seral successional habitats.
During his career, Wisdom has been a wildlife assistant at Max McGraw
Wildlife Foundation, bird phase research leader, chemical lab technician
and fisheries teacher assistant. He served as a wildlife and fisheries
biologist and assistant district wildlife biologist for the Bureau of Land
Management in Coos Bay, Ore. He also worked as a technology transfer
scientist, a regional wildlife ecologist and a terrestrial scientist at the
Forest and Range Science Laboratory in La Grande, Ore. Wisdom is now
part of the Starkey Ungulate Ecology Team, Ecological Process and
Function Program of the USDA Forest Service.
Wisdom’s academic achievements include a B.S. in wildlife management
from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, an M.S. in wildlife science
from New Mexico State and Ph.D. in forestry, range and wildlife from the
University of Idaho.
The 2011 Olaus J. Murie Award was announced in May at the Western
States and Provinces Deer and Elk Workshop in New Mexico. Wisdom
was unable to attend, however, so a formal presentation to him will
follow later this year.
The award is based on five criteria:
1. Relevance of work to the conservation of wild, free-ranging elk
2. Application of work “on the ground” to benefit wild, free-ranging
elk
3. Dedication to his or her profession
4. Commitment to the conservation of wild, free-ranging elk
5. Credibility and respect among peers
Murie was educated at the University of Michigan. He was the first to
conduct elk and habitat research at the National Elk Refuge in Jackson
Hole, Wyo. His detailed work led to the classic book, The Elk of North
America, published in 1951. He promoted sound stewardship and
protection of wildlife habitat, receiving numerous honors and awards.
Murie died in 1963.
The RMEF award honors Murie’s legacy while recognizing those who
have become conservation leaders in their own rite. Past recipients
include Jack Ward Thomas, Jim Peek, L. Jack Lyon, Valerius Geist,
Robert D. Nelson and John Cook.
About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:

Finger OFF the Trigger Stupid
Tactical Tips by Larry Vickers
Marietta Ohio --(Ammoland.com)- One thing I like to highlight in my
classes is ‘real’ world firearms safety- not the firearms safety that an
NRA certified instructor reads off a little card he carries in his wallet but
gun safety as it applies to you in the world we live in.
The world that is full of lawyers that would like nothing more than to
take everything you own. With that in mind here goes;
Accuracy Is King
1) In the real world there are no paper targets or 12 foot earth berms
behind the target. On the two way range the targets shoot back and the
best backstop you can hope to have is the upper torso of the bad guy your
dealing with. This is yet another reason why accuracy is king in the real
world and always remember when you pull the trigger you own the bullet
you just launched- good or bad.
Danger Loaded Weapon
2) Treat every weapon as if is loaded at all times; read that last part
again- at all times!! We know this is important but people don’t do it.
Something in our brain says that once the gun is ‘empty’ it is inert and
we can point it anywhere we want to – this is dangerous as all we have to
be is wrong one time and a life changing event could happen.
This is actually the most commonly violated safety rule of
them all.
Muzzle Awareness
3) Muzzle awareness; goes hand in hand with #2 – always ask yourself
‘what if this weapon where to discharge right now?’
You want the answer to be ‘ my ears would be ringing but no one would
be hurt’ . This one can’t be over emphasized because in the real world LE
and Military sweep people with their muzzles all the time as a matter of
doing business- in some cases it can’t be avoided. My theory is you need
to know where the gun is pointing at all times and only sweep someone if
it is absolutely necessary- in the civilian sector it rarely is, if ever.
Finger OFF the Trigger Stupid
4) Finger OFF trigger until ready to fire. This is The golden Rule - the
firearms safety law that allows you to use and handle weapons on a
regular basis without harming yourself or someone else. And the rule
that is mandatory in this day and age; case in point the is Glock
handguns – the most popular in the world and pistols that require you
put this rule into practice each and every time you handle one.
Not only is firearms safety everyone’s responsibility you have to practice
it 24/7 – you have to remain diligent and never let your guard down-
remember it only takes one mistake to change your life or someone else’s
life forever.
Stay safe and stay shooting!
LAV out.
