What is surrealism?

Standing Woman, bronze, 1959

Surrealist works feature the element of surprise. They are sometimes paintings of things that we know do not exist in real life, or they show situations that could not possibly happen. Sometimes, they are scenes from a dream that an artist may have had. Can you think of any surrealist art?

Persistence of Memory by Salvadore Dali

He liked to create sculptures that imitated human poses. He thought of his figure sculptures as the shadow cast by a person.

Walking Man, 1960

The neck, chest, stomach and hips are three heads high. The thighs and calves are four heads high

Notice that the arms stretch down to the thighs (about 3.5 heads high)

Create the human figure out of pipe cleaner that stands on a cardboard base. The figure should be in an interesting pose that could be recognized as the figure doing something.

The head of the figure must be 1 inch, which means that the entire figure must be 8 inches tall.
