Congratulationsonpurchasingyoursimultaneousdual-bandAirPortExtremeBaseStation.Readthisguidetogetstarted.

AirPortExtremeprovidessimultaneousdual-bandwireless802.11nnetworking.WhenyousetupyourAirPortExtremeBaseStation,itcreatestwohigh-speedWi-Finetworks:

 A2.4gigahertz(GHz)networkfor802.11b,802.11g,and802.11ndevices,suchasiPhone,iPodtouch,andoldercomputers

 A5GHznetworkfor802.11nand802.11adevices,suchasnewercomputers,iPad,andAppleTV

Wirelessdevicesjointhenetworkthatprovidesthemthebestperformanceandcompatibility,andtheAirPortExtremesharesyourbroadbandInternetconnectionwithcomputersanddevicesonyournetwork.

WithyourAirPortExtreme,youcan:

 Createapassword-protectedwirelesshomenetwork,andthenconnecttotheInternetandsharetheconnectionwithothercomputersandWi-Fidevices,suchasiPad,iPhone,iPodtouch,andAppleTV.Youcanalsosharefilesamongcomputersconnectedtothenetwork.

 ConnectasupportedUSBdevice,suchasaprinterorascanner,toyourAirPortExtreme.AllofthecompatiblecomputersontheAirPortnetwork,bothwirelessandwired,canaccessthedevice.

 ConnectaUSBharddisktoyourAirPortExtreme.AllofthecompatiblecomputersontheAirPortnetwork,bothwirelessandwired,canaccesstheinformationontheharddisk.

 ConnectaUSBhubtoyourAirPortExtreme,andthenconnectmultipleUSBdevices,suchasprintersorharddisks.Allofthecomputersonthenetworkhaveaccesstothosedevices.

Important:  UseAirPortUtilitytosetupyoursimultaneousdual-bandAirPortExtremeBaseStation.PreviousversionsofAirPortSetupAssistantandAirPortAdminUtilityarenotcompatiblewiththisbasestation.

AirPortUtilityisinstalledintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonacomputerusingMacOSX,andinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.IfAirPortUtilityisn’tinstalledonyourcomputer,youcandownloaditfromwww.apple.com/support/airport.

AirPort UtilityUseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourAirPortExtremetocreateawirelessnetwork,connecttotheInternet,andsharecompatibleUSBprintersandharddisks.YoucanalsoconnectyourAirPortExtremetoanexistingAirPortExtremewirelessnetwork.

AirPortUtilityisalsoanadvancedtoolforsettingupandmanagingtheTimeCapsule,AirPortExtreme,andAirPortExpressBaseStations.Useittomanuallyadjustnetwork,routing,andsecuritysettingsandotheradvancedoptions.

Plugging In AirPort ExtremeBeforeyoupluginyourAirPortExtreme,firstconnecttheappropriatecablestotheportsyouwanttouse:

 ConnecttheEthernetcablethatisconnectedtoyourDSLorcablemodem(ifyouwillconnecttotheInternet)totheEthernet(WAN)port(<).

 ConnectaUSBcableconnectedfromtheUSBport(d)ontheAirPortExtremetoacompatibleUSBprinter(ifyouwillprinttoaUSBprinter),aharddisk,orahub.

 ConnectanEthernetcablefromanyEthernetdevicetotheEthernetLANports(G).

Afteryouhaveconnectedthecablesforallthedevicesyouplantouse,connecttheACadaptertothepowerport,andplugyourAirPortExtremeintoapoweroutlet.Thereisnopowerswitch.

Important:  UseonlytheACadapterthatcamewithyourAirPortExtreme.

WhenyouplugtheAirPortExtremeACadapterintoapoweroutlet,thestatuslightflashesgreenforonesecond,andthenglowsamberwhileitstartsup.Afterithasstartedupcompletely,thestatuslightflashesamberuntilyourAirPortExtremehasbeenupdatedwiththecorrectsettings.ThestatuslightglowssolidgreenafteryourAirPortExtremeisproperlysetupandconnectedtotheInternetoranetwork.

WhenyouconnectEthernetcablestotheEthernetports,thelightsabovethemglowsolidgreen.

TheAirPortExtremeStatusLightThefollowingtableexplainstheAirPortExtremelightsequencesandwhattheyindicate.

Light Status/description

Off AirPortExtremeisunplugged.

Flashing green AirPortExtremeisstartingup.Thelightflashesforonesecond.

Solid green AirPortExtremeisonandworkingproperly.IfyouchooseFlashOnActivityfromtheStatusLightpop-upmenu(intheBaseStationpaneofAirPortsettingsinAirPortUtility),thestatuslightmayflashgreentoindicatenormalactivity.

Flashing amber AirPortExtremecannotestablishaconnectiontothenetworkortheInternet,orisencounteringaproblem.MakesureyouhaveinstalledAirPortUtilityanduseittogetinformationaboutwhatmightcausethestatuslighttoflashamber.See“IfYourAirPortExtremeStatusLightFlashesAmber”onpage29.

ConfiguringandSharingInternetAccessIfyouplantoshareyourInternetconnectionwithwireless-enabledcomputersonyournetworkorcomputersconnectedtotheEthernetports,youneedtosetupyourAirPortExtremeasanAirPortbasestation.Afteritissetup,computersaccesstheInternetthroughtheAirPortnetwork.ThebasestationconnectstotheInternetandtransmitsinformationtothecomputersovertheAirPortnetwork.

BeforeyouuseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourwirelessdevice,connectyourDSLorcablemodemtotheAirPortExtremeEthernetWANport(<).IfyouareusinganexistingEthernetnetworkwithInternetaccesstoconnecttotheInternet,youcanconnecttheAirPortExtremetotheEthernetnetworkinstead.

UsethesetupassistantinAirPortUtilitytoenteryourISPsettingsandconfigurehowtheAirPortExtremesharesthesettingswithothercomputers.

1 Choosethewirelessnetworkyouwanttochange.OnaMac,usetheAirPortstatusmenuinthemenubar.OnacomputerusingWindowsXP,holdthepointeroverthewirelessconnectioniconuntilyouseeyourAirPortnetworkname(SSID),andchooseitfromthelistiftherearemultiplenetworksavailable.

ThedefaultnetworknameforanApplebasestationisAirPortNetworkXXXXXX,whereXXXXXXisreplacedwiththelastsixdigitsoftheAirPortID,alsoknowastheMediaAccessControlorMACaddress.TheAirPortIDisprintedonthebottomofanAirPortExtreme.

2 OpenAirPortUtility,locatedintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonacomputerusingMacOSX,orinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.

3 SelectyourbasestationandclickContinue.

4 FollowtheonscreeninstructionstoconfigureandshareInternetaccessonyourAirPortExtreme.

UsingAirPortUtilityisaquickandeasywaytosetupyourbasestationandnetwork.Ifyouwanttosetadditionaloptionsforyournetwork,suchasrestrictingaccesstoyournetwork,orsettingadvancedDHCPoptions,youcanchooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenuofAirPortUtility.

SettingAdvancedOptionsTosetadvancedoptions,youcanuseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourAirPortExtrememanually.Youcanconfigureadvancedbasestationsettings,suchasadvancedsecurityoptions,closednetworks,DHCPleasetime,accesscontrol,powercontrols,useraccounts,andmore.

To set advanced options:1 Choosethewirelessnetworkyouwanttochange.OnaMac,usetheAirPortstatusmenuinthemenubar.OnacomputerusingWindows,holdthepointeroverthewirelessconnectioniconuntilyouseeyourAirPortnetworkname(SSID),andchooseitfromthelistiftherearemultiplenetworksavailable.

ThedefaultnetworknameforanApplebasestationisAirPortNetworkXXXXXX,whereXXXXXXisreplacedwiththelastsixdigitsoftheAirPortID,alsoknownastheMediaAccessControlorMACaddress.TheAirPortIDisprintedonthebottomofanAirPortExtreme.

2 OpenAirPortUtility,locatedintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonaMac,andinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.

3 Ifthereismorethanonebasestationinthelist,selectthebasestationyouwanttoconfigure.Ifyoudon’tseethebasestationyouwanttoconfigure,clickRescantoscanforavailablebasestations,andthenselectthebasestationyouwant.

4 ChooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenu.Ifyouarepromptedforapassword,enterit.

FormoreinformationanddetailedinstructionsforusingthemanualsetupfeaturesinAirPortUtility,seethe“AppleAirPortNetworks”document,locatedatwww.apple.com/support/airport.

AllowingWirelessClientsAccesstoYourNetworkIfyournetworkispassword-protectedusingWPAPersonalorWPA/WPA2Personal,youcanprovidewirelessclientsaccesstoyournetworkwithoutrequiringthemtoenterthenetworkpassword.

Whenyouallowaclientaccesstoyournetwork,theclient’snameandwirelessMACaddress(orAirPortID)arestoredintheaccesscontrollistofAirPortUtilityuntilyouremovethemfromthelist.Youcanalsoprovide24hoursofaccess,afterwhichtimetheclientisnolongerabletoaccessyournetwork.

Whenyouprovideaclientaccesstoyourwirelessnetwork,theclientdoesnotneedtoenterthenetworkpassword.

To allow client access to your network:1 OpenAirPortUtility,selectyourbasestation,andchooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenu.Enterthebasestationpasswordifnecessary.

2 ChooseAddWirelessClientsfromtheBaseStationmenu.

3 Selecthowyouwanttheclienttoaccessthenetwork:

 SelectPINtoentertheeight-digitnumberprovidedbytheclientrequestingnetworkaccess.

 Select“Firstattempt”toallownetworkaccesstothefirstclientattemptingtojointhenetwork.
