Anticipatory Set: allowing the students to activate their prior knowledge in order to set the pace and guide the lesson.

.

LET’S GO OVER THE ANSWERS! THIS WILL ALLOW YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL TO IDENTIFY YOUR POINTS OF CONFUSION THUS FAR…FOR QUESTIONS 1 AND 2 YOU SHOULD HAVE FOUND THE ANSWERS IN YOUR…

-glossary, your “8th grade lexicon (dictionary)” that we are building!

Question 3: Let’s increase your level of anxiety with some victimizing.

Hand sensor time!If my hand senses leadership in you and

you are selected you will be ask: Are you able to answer this question fully

yet?

Be specific, justify your answer: Tell me why or why not?

30 seconds to mentally prepare or freak out!

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO GUESS SOMEONE’S MOOD BY STUDYING THEIR BODY LANGUAGE (PARENT/GUARDIAN/FRIEND/TEACHER)?

YEAR LONG GOAL: HOW WILL THIS HELP ME?Have you ever had an assignment to read

a chapter and answer questions? By making predictions using text features,

you are sure to find more accurate answers faster, and complete your assignment in less time! You will use “Prior Knowledge” (what you

have already learned in previous lessons/years).Prior Knowledge helps make correct

inferences (conclusions/ judgments). We discuss/explore our natural reading

skills that we all have so that we can: fine-tune them, become more effective readers and EXCEED on AIMS.

1. READ THE TITLE

The title of an article, expository text or a poem holds many clues.

“The Art of Brick”

What might this article be about?

Turn to your shoulder partner and say:

Partner A (Long Hair) “I predict this article is about...(then tell them your prediction”

Partner B (repeat)

Partner B “I predict this article is about...(then tell them your prediction”

Partner A (repeat)

2. USE THE GRAPHICS

What does the picture tell me about the possible topics of the article?

What is it?

What materials?

Prior knowledge?

LOOK AT ARTIST/HIS WORK

Visuals/videos are a PRIVILAGE!

3. READ THE TOPIC SENTENCES

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs.Nathan Sawaya, 32, never grew out of his love for

Legos that began at age 3 with his first set.

“You Do” find 2 more topic sentences

4. DECIDE WHAT YOU KNOW

What do I know about the purpose of the article?

What do I know about the topic of the article?

What prior knowledge do I bring to the table?

5. READ THE ARTICLE AND TAKE NOTES IN I.N.B.

With your shoulder partner

@ Noise Level 1 (model)

I want to hear you talking: (help each other paraphrase)

“This is important we should write this down”

Remember to paraphrase, a skill we learned/practiced when learning how to use Cornell notes and when we learned about Context Clues.

LET’S SEE WHERE WE ARE AT

T.O.D.: What might it look like if you were required to do this activity on your own?

Tell me what your possible challenges might be.

What are your Points of Confusion?

6. KEY WORDS

What were the key words used in the article?

Were there words used several times?

Were there bold words or italicized words?

These must be important to the author’s purpose so make a note of them.

7. SUMMARIZE THE ARTICLE, IN YOUR SUMMARY SECTION.

Now that you are aware of the topic and purpose, summarize the article in your own words.

3-4 sentences (shoot for 5, exceed expectations).

Remember to include the ideas behind those key words, the title and the graphics.

EXAMPLE: ARTICLE SUMMARY

Nathan Sawaya has been building with Legos since he was three years old. He realized his dream of becoming an artist when he won a Lego design contest in his youth. Now he designs anything imaginable out of Legos for private and corporate customers who want a little flair in their offices or homes. Nathan has proven the Lego theory on a whole new level: You really can build anything with Legos.
