AGENCIES RELATED TO WELFARE SERVICES TO

THE CHILDREN

“It is an organization that is administered by an autonomous board which holds meetings, collects funds for its support chiefly from private sources and spends money for health services.”

INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY It was established in1920 It has 400 branches in India Executing programs are, promoting of health, prevention of disease and mitigation of suffering among the people.

ACTIVITIES Day care services-eg-nursery schools,

balwadis Holiday homes-12-16 yrs at hill

stations and sea side resorts. Recreation facilities-play centers-

public parks, bal bhavans, childrens films, museum children library.

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OR INVOLUNTARY AGENCIES

1.WHO This agency began at 7th april 1948. Head quarters at geneva. The day 7th April is celebrated as

world Health Day. Objective; “the attainment of the

highest level of all peoples health” Present objective: “HEALTH FOR

ALL 2020” WHO has its own constitution, own

governing bodies, own membership and own budget.

MEMBERSHIP:UNITED NATION and WHO FUNCTIONS : • To act as a directing and co-ordinating

authority on all international health work.• It permits all WHO member to identify

correctively,• Priority health problems throughout the

world, • To define collectively health policies and

target to cope with them,• To devise collectively strategies, principles

and programs to give effect to those policies • To attain the targets.

WHO FOLLOW THESE AREAS TO WORK Prevention and control of specific diseases.

Development of comprehensive health services

Family health Environmental health Health statistics Biomedical research Health literature and information

Co-operation with other organizations.

WHO PROVIDES SERVICES: Immunization Maternal and child health care Human reproduction Nutrition and health education Food sanitation Environment hygiene Reduction In IMR and birth rate,

and all emergency services.

STRUCTURES CONSIST OF; WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY: Supreme

governing body of the WHO. it is composed of delegates from each member state.

THE EXECUTIVE BOARD: it consists of 31 members and all technically qualified.

Function: to give effect to the decisions and policies approved by the world health assembly.

WHO SECRETARIAT: it is in GENEVA, headed by director general, WHO. It has divisions.

Regions: WHO has established 6 regions. India is a member of South East Asia region.

Headquarter is located at NEW DELHI.

2.UNICEF United nation international children’s emergency fund is one of the specialized agency of united nations established in1946.

Its region office is in NEW DELHI.

Headquarters at NEWYORK. It has special agencies of the united nations like UNDP, FAO and UNESCO.

UNICEF SERVICES: 1.CHILD HEALTH It has provided aid for the production

of vaccine and sera in many countries. UNICEF supported India's BCG

vaccination program from its inception.

It has also assisted in the establishment of a assisted environmental sanitation programs emphasizing safe and sufficient water for drinking and household use in rural areas.

Purpose: to improve the quality of life of villages.

The greater attention of UNICEF is being given to the concept of “WHOLE CHILD” meaning that assistance should hence forward not only to health and nutrition but also long term personnel development and to the development of country in which they lives. This approach is known as country health promoting.

CURRENTLY UNICEF FOCUSED ON; Primary health care to the mothers and children

Emphasis is placed on immunizations

Infant and child care, family planning aspect of family health

Safe water and adequate sanitation.

2.CHILD NUTRITION UNICEF gives high priority to child

nutrition. Its aid for child nutrition started in

mid 1950 with a development of low-cost protein rich food mixtures.

In collaboration with FAO,UNICEF also began aiding “ Applied Nutrition” programs through such channels as community development, agricultural extension, schools and which required for better child nutrition.

3. FAMILY AND CHILD WELFARE

Purpose :to improve the care of children, both within and outside their homes through parent education, day care centers, child welfare and youth agencies and women’s clubs.

These services are provided as part of health, nutrition and education or home economics extension programs.

4.EDUCATION Currently UNICEF is promoting a

campaign known as “GOBI” campaign to encourage four strategies for a “CHILD HEALTH REVOLUTION”

G-for growth charts to better monitor child development

O-for oral rehydration to treat all mild and moderate dehydration.

B-for breast feeding I- for immunization against

measles, diphtheria, polio, pertusis, tetanus and tuberculosis.

3.FAO (FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL ORAGNIZATION)

The food and agriculture organization (FAO) was formed in the year 1945 with headquarters in Rome.

It was united nations organization specialized agency created to look after several areas of world co-operation

AIMS OF FAO1.To help nations raise living

standards2.To improve the nutritional status

of people of all countries3. To increase the efficiency of

farming, forestry and fisheries4. To better the condition of rural

people and better the opportunity of productive work.

FAO is also collaborating with other international agencies in the applied nutritional programes.

Joining with WHOActivities; Nutritional surveys Training courses Seminars Co-ordination of research

programs on brucellosis and other zoonoses.

4.CARE (Co-operative for assistance and relief

everywhere) CARE was founded in North America

in the wake of 2nd world war in the year 1945.

It is one of the world’s largest independent, non profit, non sectarian international relief and development organization.

It provides emergency aid and long term development assistance.

CARE in India focused its food support in the ICDS program and in development of programs in the areas of health and income supplementation.

It is helping in the following projects;

Integrated nutrition and health project

Better health and nutrition project Anemia control project Improving women’s health project Improved health care for adolescent

girls project Child survival project Improving women’s reproductive

health and family spacing project

CARE India works in partnership with

the government of India, state govt.,NGOs etc.

Currently it has projects in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, MP, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, West Bengal and UP.

5.USAID

(United states agency for international development)

It was formerly known as U.S. technical co-operation mission. Since 1952, India has been receiving assistance under this programme.

ACTIVITIES OF USAID The US govt. is assisting in a

number of projects designed to improve the health of Indian people.
