6.7.1 BioStep (Smith & Nephew)
Biostep is a collagen matrix dressing that deactivates excess metalloproteases (MMPs) and has a
6-day wear time for prolonged control of the wound environment. The matrix also contains alginate
for absorbing exudates, and carboxymethylcellulose to ensure close contact with the wound. The
gelling actions also provide a cooling, soothing effect for enhanced patient comfort.
Two main functions of Biostep include:
• MMP Targeting: contains both type 1 and denatured (gelatin) porcine-derived collagen,
and attracts and serves as sacrificial substrates for many MMPs
• MMP Deactivation: contains EDTA which permanently deactivates excess MMPs,
providing prolonged, targeted MMP control without altering the activity of essential growth
factors
Biostep Ag has a further antibacterial activity of silver to help control contaminated and colonised
wounds.

8.6.3 The End of Lawsuit between MiMedx
In February 2015, Organogenesis announced that MiMedx, another skin allograft manufacturer,
has dismissed a lawsuit against the Organogenesis. According to the company, they informed
MiMedx that Organogenesis will seek sanctions against MiMedx and its counsel unless the case is
dismissed before 5th February.
The case was filed on the last day of 2014, and dismissed after one month. MiMedx claimed that
Organogenesis was engaged in malicious actions which resulted in MiMedx‘s EpiFix removed from
the Federal Supply Schedule (FSS) of the Veterans Administration in June 2013. EpiFix was later
added back to the list. Although the lawsuit was withdrawn, MiMedx announced that the company
"continues to believe that Organogenesis has engaged in misconduct against MiMedx."
In August 2014, Organogenesis also announced that the company has been awarded VA’s FSS
Contract for Apligraf. This five-year contract will streamline the purchasing process for Veterans
Affairs Medical Centers to gain easier access to Apligraf.
