What is addiction?

What is addiction?

A condition in which a person can no longer control his/her need or desire for something, usually a “drug”.

• Genetics - important factor

• Environmental - 10% of people who experiment become addicted

• Drugs Alter the Brain’s Reward Pathway –When the frontal lobe is still developing drugs more easily set up addiction for life!

way our bodies work. –Find way to bloodstream–Transported throughout body–In brain can intensify or dull senses,

alter your sense of alertness, sometimes decrease physical pain.

Why do teens use?

• Peer pressure• Self medication• Curiosity • Don’t believe they will become addicted• Want to be “adult”• Advertising (tobacco & alcohol) • Featured in movies – “cool”• Family does• Social

Why is it extra bad for teens to use drugs and alcohol?

Why is it extra bad for teens to use?

• Body is still developing–Especially the brain!• Leads to risky behavior•More likely to become addicted

Some terms

• Initial Use• Transitional Use• Tolerance• Physically dependent • Psychologically dependent • Withdrawal

Leads to Addiction.

Dependence–Physically dependent: • when the user relies on the drug/something

to feel normal and the body needs the drug to function

–Psychologically dependent:• when the user uses the drug/something as

an emotional crutch –Substance abuse*:• what does the term substance abuse mean?

How is it different from addiction?*overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive

substance, esp. alcohol or drugs.

Denial and Rationalization

• Denial: – insistence that there is no problem despite

evidence to the contrary

• Rationalization:– explanations of use, self imposed rules that

legitimize use– Ex. statements like – “everyone needs ____”

Physical Effects

For all drugs: risky behavior. For drugs: depends on drug. Common physical effects include brain damage, liver damage, lung damage and disease, risk of HIV…

• Binge drinking is the most common pattern of excessive alcohol use in the United States, and all over the world!

• This is defined by men consuming 5 or more drinks, and women consuming 4 or more drinks, in about 2 hours.

• Can lead to alcohol poisoning and death.
