Anna and the King
Accountability
The king had many wives and had many children; he seeks power through people around him.
Anna found that strange and couldn’t accept it. For her it was not acceptable for the king to have
that high number of wives, as in her country it was not allowed for the man to marry more than
one woman, and in her country that was not considered as a problem, as people seek power as
individuals, reflecting the high individualism society of UK, which differs from the high
collectivism society of Siam. The United Kingdom is one of the most individualist countries in
the world, and people in UK re greatly Individualist and private people. (tennant, 1999)
Communication: Direct/indirect
Anna’s son has a fight with the king’s son, when Anna spoke to them, her son apologized for
what he did, but the king’s son didn’t apologize saying that the man shouldn’t apologize to the
women. , This reflects the high masculinity of the society in Siam .On the other hand , in UK
men and women were considered as equal , and in case a man did something wrong , it was
normal to apologize to a woman. Another point is that men in Siam were very tough in dealing
with women and they considered themselves as superior to them. But, in UK men treated women
with high respect and they don’t find it strange to show that respect reflecting that the UK is a
Masculine society. In general in UK people live so as to work and to have a clear performance
ambition and that was shared between men and women. (What about the UK?, n.d.)
Inclusive/exclusive
Anna and the prince found a slave gained in the garden for six weeks and she had a bad small.
That happened to her because she asked to pay for her freedom. When she objected to the king
saying that it is unfair, so she was punished for that in that cruel way. In Siam that was a
common thing. But in UK, that was abnormal, as no slaves were there in UK, and human rights
were very respectful.
Another example is that of one of the king women who didn’t love him, and she was unhappy
because of that she decided to escape with her lover. When they were caught they were punished
by learning. For Anna that was very strange as women in UK were free in choosing their
husbands. (uncertainty avoidance, n.d.)
Achieve
Anna was very surprised when she saw the people in Siam sit on their knees when they speak to
the king. For them that was a way to show their respect. Also, no one dares to say a word in the
presence of the king, and when they speak to him they don’t look at him straight in the eye. .She
realized that the King in Thailand was treated as if he was a god. Also in Siam, slaves used to
serve people in the kingdom, and they were treated badly.
But in UK matters were greatly different, as the king was just an important person, so the nation
has to show respect to him. The way that people in UK show respect to the milk was by just
bowing, and when they talk to him they look at his eyes as other people. For slaves, they were
not common in the UK. (What about Thailand?, n.d.)
Achieved/ Ascribed
Other examples of Achieved sinkect bowing to the king , in this silent moment , we saw the king stepping out and the Siames people immediately bowing the king .Achieved culture always show us that repect authority and everyone has a specific place as we can see in this exaple . But , Anna show us Ascribed and is not bowing to the king which is an example of the persone who not related to Achieved culture . in addtion Ascribed culture belive that all the people are equl .the status and poition to be earned through individual effort or acquired due to ones agem family or coonection .
