SPARK
SPARK is a dynamic enrichment program for
students in Pre K - grade 8 Located at Academy Hill School. Classes focus on problem solving with
hands-on, minds-on activities.
We strive to nurture students’ strengths with intri-
guing and ceilingless learning that is fun.
Courses are individualized based on student en-
rollment. Challenges are heightened, deepened, or broadened, to meet student learning needs.
Classes include multiple ages and are designed so that students work at their own pace and level of
readiness. Challenges are deepened or broadened to meet student learning needs.
Academy Hill School is a private day school for bright children. These courses are designed for its
students and are open to the general public. Class sizes are intentionally small. Therefore en-rollment is limited.

SPARK*EL This is a unique enrichment program for the early
childhood set, ages 3*-5, who have not yet been to Kindergarten. Each week features a different subject, including a variety of big ideas for little people.
We focus on imagination, exploration, cooperation, sharing, while enjoying plenty of time to play!
Week I - Technology Children will enjoy technology without too much
screen time. This session includes hands-on activi-ties about robots, electricity, computer innards, pic-ture taking, movie making, and “research.”
Week II - Sciences This session includes age appropriate creative activi-ties from earth science, biology, chemistry, oceanog-raphy, environmental science, and physics.
Week III - Arts This session includes developmentally appropriate activities in 2 and 3D visual arts, vocal & instrumen-tal music, drama, masks, puppets, rhythmic move-
ment and/or dance. * NOTE: Children must be able to fully toilet themselves.

Grades K - 8
Chemistry Concoctions - Explore chemistry with gooey and explosive
messes and maybe eat what you make! We have new “recipes” to try!
Martial Arts - Beginners and experienced students alike are welcome to learn martial arts together as they build confidence and focus.
Art is Messy - Enjoy painting, clay, paper mache, and other messy art
projects. Try dots like Seurat or dough like Van Gough and have fun!
Have a Ball - Play all kinds of games that use a ball: baseball, softball,
soccer, flag football, volleyball, or be a ball with bumper ball.
Grades 3 - 8
Mario Mayhem - Make a live game like Mario’s, then be the characters and play the game. Then create other things with the Mario theme.
Great Gadgets - make things like Google Cardboard, a wind turbine, batteries from water or pennies, and a solar powered phone charger.
Pokémon Planet - create things with a Pokémon theme like origami, sun
catchers, & edible poke balls! Invent your own characters and cards and
maybe play a little of the card game and trade a few too.
Star Wars Architecture - The settings in the Star Wars movies were
amazing. Now you can design and build places like those too!
Grades 5 - 8
Swashbucklers - Pirates, plunder, and sword play. It’s all part of being a
swashbuckler. Arr harr matey!
Aerospace - Yes, it really is rocket science, including aeronautics, pro-
pulsion, and aerodynamics from NASA’s Glenn Research Center. Design various model rockets such as tube, bottle, water, and air rockets, then
launch them and see how they fly. It may be back to the drawing board.
The days of Robin Hood - It’s archery and other fun like the legend of
Robin Hood with longbows and arrows. What character will you be? Can
you shoot from behind a tree? How far will you shoot at the tournament?
Electrical Engineering - Put electricity to work. Design and build things
like an alarm, a solar cell, a pinball game, or a planet rover.
SPARK Classes - Week II
Grades K - 8
Enjoy Nature - Enjoy the outdoors no matter what the weather. Explore, create, get dirty and learn about the world we live in.
Early Engineers - Use your imagination to build things with paper, bottles,
and tubes. Make toys, games, and other fun things (like Rube Goldberg
games) and avoid “Egg Drop Soup” in this creative construction class.
Time to Sign - Sign Language is for everyone! Express yourself with Ameri-
can Sign Language. Play signing games, tell stories with your hands, sign
songs, and learn to “talk” without grown-ups knowing what you are saying.
Beginner Bots - Learn about and build robots like a robotic hand, a drawing-bot, and a bug-bot too. Challenge others to races and win rewards.
Grades 3 - 8
Get S-M-Art - That’s what happens when you combine Science, Math and
Art. Try creative projects like the hexaflexagon. There are new projects to
make in this well-liked class.
Sweet Treats & Pocky - Pocky is a popular treat. Its chocolate covered sticks are easy to make. We will make and bake treats like these and other
favorites.
Kids CAD - This is computer aided design for students! Design realistic 3D
images with highlights and shadows using this kid-friendly program.
A Hamilton Happening - Select scenes and/or songs from the popular
Broadway musical “Hamilton.” Then perform them in the Friday showcase.
Who knew history could be so much fun!
Grades 5 - 8
Photography Studio - Take pictures like the pros. Morph faces and learn
other tricks of the trade. It’s an art form with composition, light, line, tex-ture, saturation, and more.
Rock Band - That’s right: electric guitars, amps, mics, & drums. You’ve got
one week to get it together (with help from a teacher who is in a rock band).
The Middle Ages - Create catapults, triumph with trebuchets, control the cross bow and conquer the castle!
Have a Blast - Do experiments with dramatic results like soda and Mentos,
vinegar and baking soda, compressed air, and other things that go boom,
pop, fix, splat!.
Timing: Each class runs one week for a half day.
Drop off & Pick up - at front door Morning - 8:15 to 8:30
Afternoon - 4:30 to 4:40
Morning courses: 8:30 - 12:00 Lunch: 12:00 - 1:00 and includes supervised free time. Afternoon courses: 1:00 - 4:30
Before and After program care: available from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 - 5:30p.m. for an extra fee
Before Care Drop off - between 7:30 and 8:15 After Care Pick up - between 4: 40 and 5:30 Please note: Children should not be at Academy Hill before
7:30 or after 5:30. There isn’t any supervision then. If for any
reason you must be later than 5:30 it is very important to call!

Students may leave the change of clothing in lockers or cubbies.

A student health form is required prior to attendance. Known allergies must be listed on the health form.
Enrollment is contingent on payment. Classes with under 3 students may be cancelled. If so,
you will be notified and offered another selection.
Grade levels for the SPARK program are determined by the grade the student is in at the time of enrollment,
or that he/she will finish in June, not the upcoming year.
Students entering Kindergarten in the fall are eligible for
our SPARK*EL program. You may contact Ms. Stewart for questions or

SPARK Classes - Week III
K and Up
Kids Coding - Use fun programs like LightBot, Kodu, Code.org, or Scratch to learn logic and coding. You can even build a world or design a
game of your own and share it with the world.
Dramarama - Play theater games, act out a children’s story that you
change in funny ways to make it your own. Friday is show time!
Spy Camp - It’s about codes, clues, fingerprints, suspects, leads and
more. Find the culprit and solve the mysteries using real spy methods.
Grand Camp - Fun without technology or screens. Play hands-on games
with spoons, marshmallows, tents, and other creative and active fun!
3 and Up
Advanced Robotics - Build programmable robots that use Arduino
boards and program in Scratch! They have multiple sensors and can be
controlled by a computer or remote.
It’s Dragons - All things dragon-ey. Create dragon projects based on
your interests from the fantasy lands of dragons, princes, princesses! It
could be writing, costuming, Legos, drawing, or other creative media.
Minecraft - You may know the game but we’ll stretch your creativity and building skills with challenges to match your skill level. Beginners and
experienced Minecrafters alike will gain from this class.
I Love to Read! - Talk about and share your favorite books with others.
Create something related to a book like a play, a review, an award, draw-
ings, paintings, songs, or write your own book.
Grades 5 and Up
Money! Find out about how to work with money, investments, stocks,
bonds, banks, and other financial fun.
Pick a Program - Learn the programming language of your choice.
There’s Scratch, Python, Java Script and a more. (When you register
please indicate which program you would like to learn.)
Out of the Way Places - If you like Geo Bee then this is for you! Find out
about less well known places like the countries of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Then win the prizes in the competitions!
Raspberry Pi & MORE - Raspberry Pi is a tiny computer you use to
make fun, practical projects. If you already have one, it’s time to put it to
work on projects like wearables, node red, or a Pixel Pet.
