Dear Parents, Students, Colleagues, Alumni and well-wishers,
MES Ponnani College, established in 1968 is unquestionably the best institutionrun by the Muslim Educational Society, the premier educational organization ofMuslims in Kerala. The light it showed to a large section of the people in andaround the locality, which is largely inhabited by the minority groups, fisherfolkand scheduled castes, and also to the neighbouring districts in the Malabar regionis quite commendable.
Choosing where to continue your education is a major decision and I believe thatMES Ponnani College will be a choice you will not regret, especially if you areambitious and determined to succeed. MES Ponnani College is a diverse andfriendly learning community where students progress well in their studies and weare very proud of their achievements.

THE MUSLIM EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY
The last five decades have witnessed the remarkable
transformation in the educational status of Muslims in Kerala,
supposedly the most backward in education. The driving force
behind this effort has been M.E.S., the largest educational
agency of the MusliM. Com/munity in India having thousands of
life members and hundreds of institutions.
The movement started under the great leadership of
late Dr. P.K. Abdul Gafoor in 1964 at Calicut, was supported by
a large number of professionals and businessmen and in a short
span of time, it spread to all Districts, Taluks and even to the
Panchayaths in Kerala and other parts of India and abroad. As
on today it is the largest Muslim service organisation in the
country. It has also well-established units in Middle East
countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi,
Kuwait, etc. and still the organisation is growing fast, extending
its services further to reach every nook and corner of the world.
MES is the largest corporate educational agency of
Muslims in India, with more than 150 institutions including
Medical College, Dental College, Engineering Colleges, College of
Nursing, Arts and Science colleges, Training Colleges, CBSE
schools, State syllabus Higher Secondary Schools and Industrial
Training Centres with more than 60,000 students and around
15,000 employees. Hospitals, Orphanages, Old age homes,
Special Schools for Mentally Challenged, Cultural complexes and
various hostels draw up the broad canvas of the services offered
and activities undertaken by the society.

THE M E S CREST
On top of the MES emblem the MES legend is
inscribed. It is a verse from the Holy Qur-An, which
means “Oh Lord! Enlighten Us”. The Balance below it
is the symbol of the prevailing justice in Islam. The
crescent moon and star represent the Muslims all over the world.
The Holy Qur-An, the source of all knowledge is placed open
below. Beside it the flambeau of Islamic culture is held in sturdy
hands. The letters “MES” in the middle is the short form for
Muslim Educational Society. The coconut trees below denote the
scenic beauty of Kerala, the land where Islam and institutions of
MES are widely spread. The feather held in hand with bangles
shows the importance given to women literacy and education in
Islam. The bottom of the crest is the full name of the
organization and the year of inception.
HISTORICAL GLIMPSES OF PONNANI
Ponnani is one of the ancient seaports and trade centres
on the Malabar Coast. With a glorious past of renowned religious
scholars who were the torch-bearers of Islamic knowledge,
Ponnani could earn the title “Al-Ilmu Ponnani” (Ponnani the
Centre of Knowledge). It has thus made an indelible imprint on
the pages of Kerala history, with reference to the great
expeditions of Tippu Sultan and the conquests of the Portugese
and the British. It has also produced world famous social
reformers, scholars, poets, and artists.
M E S PONNANI COLLEGE - A PROFILE
The idea of a college at Ponnani actually emanated from
the brain of late Dr. P.K. Abdul Gafoor Sahib, while addressing a
public meeting organized by M.E.S. Ponnani unit in 1967. In the
keynote address, he unequivocally stated that M.E.S. was ready
to start a College here at Ponnani, provided the Ponnani M.E.S.

units mobilize the required land and 1 lakh rupees. It was a
great source of inspiration for the energetic members of the
Ponnani unit. They took it up as a challenge and managed to
accomplish all the requirements within a short duration. A
sprawling 32 acres of land was obtained from the government
and they also raised an amount of 1.25 lakhs rupees by means of
public contribution. The long cherished dream thus became a
reality when the college came into existence in 1968 under the
patronage of M.E.S. President late Dr. P.K. Abdul Gafoor, Sri.
E.K. Imbichi Bava and Sri. C.H. Mohammed Koya, being then
the Ministers of Kerala.
The college enjoys 2(f) and 12(B) status of UGC and is
affiliated to University of Calicut. At present it provides higher
education to more than 1600 students in five Post Graduate
programmes and ten Under Graduate programmes. Among five
Post Graduate departments, three departments are recognized
as Research Centres by Calicut University. In addition to this,
we have two UGC Career oriented add on courses and
department level certificate courses. There are 68 Teaching
faculties and 28 Non-teaching staff in our college. The college
was re-accredited by the NAAC at A level in September 2012.
Ponnani lies on the western outskirts of Malappuram
district. The college is situated in Ponnani municipal area and
its campus stretches to the west side of Tippu Sultan road. This
is the only higher education centre between Tirur and
Guruvayoor in the coastal belt of Malappuram district. The
National Highway 66, the K.S.R.T.C. bus depot and the private
bus stand make commuting very easy for the students.
Kuttipuram railway station is 18 kms towards northeast and
Guruvayoor railway station in 29 kms towards south.

DEPARTMENT OF PG STUDIES &
RESEARCH IN GEOLOGY Geology – Illuminates the past, sustains the present and promotes
the future.
The Department of PG Studies and Research in Geology is one
of the prestigious departments of MES Ponnani College. The
department was established in the year 1978 as an undergraduate
department with the introduction of B. Sc. Geology Programme.
The year 1981 marked the passing out of the first B. Sc. batch
with meritorious achievements, holding first rank at the
University level. After twenty years, the department was
upgraded as a Post Graduate department during the year 1998
with the introduction of M.Sc. Applied Geology Programme. With
two teachers – Dr. K Gopalakrishna and Dr. V A Ayisha - having
obtained in-service Ph.D., Degree, the Department was elevated to
the status of a research centre in Geology of the University of
Calicut in the year 2008. The faculty and the department as a
whole is extensively participating in social out-reach and
extension programmes. So far, the faculty members successfully
completed a number of major and minor research projects funded
by UGC, KSCSTE, DST, DoECC etc. During the last four decades,
the department was committed to imparting high-quality
education related to Earth and Environmental Sciences. The
department also conducts quality research on socially and
academically relevant aspects. The mission of the department is
to: (a) develop geologists, who are competent enough to shoulder
global and national responsibilities, (b) inculcate research
aptitude among the students, and (c) reach out the society to solve
the issues of geological concern. In order to update and bridge the
knowledge gap, the department frequently conducts national as
well as regional level seminars, symposium and workshops.

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY Zoology is a branch of biology that focuses on animals and
animal life. Learning Zoology is important, because, the study of
animals and communities provides insight into how „life‟ works
and consequently how we work. Zoology makes a huge impact on
our world through the scientific study of the evolution, anatomy,
physiology, behaviour, habitats and health of animals and
humans. The Department of Zoology was established in 1968 as
Department of Biology with pre degree course. Undergraduate
course in Zoology was started in the year 1982 with chemistry
and botany as subsidiaries. Department offers B. Sc. Zoology
(regular) with a sanctioned strength of 36 seats.
As a department engaged in the “Life Sciences”, great importance
is placed on instilling in the students a deep understanding and
appreciation for nature and the need for its preservation and
conservation. The department strives to ensure that students
take an active role in understanding environmental issues and
their responsibility as students of the Zoological Sciences. To this
end, the department initiates and conducts several community-
based outreach activities which involve the active participation of
students to the greatest extent possible. To make the subject
colourful, we organize many field trips, institutional visits and
nature camps to promote the academic and other cognitive skills
to assimilate with mother Nature.

gets established and stabilized in HEIs. The IIC model is
designed to address the existing challenges/issues in HEIs such
as less numbers, occasional and unplanned Innovation &
Entrepreneurship (I&E) activities organised in HEIs with low
involvement of top leadership, lack of coherence and absence of
synergy in resource mobilization, deployment and
underutilization of creative potential of youths as major barrier
for vibrant I&E ecosystem to emerge from HEIs.
IIC model is unique and distinct as it integrates the
functionalities of flexibility calendar activities, scoring and
reward system, decentralizing operation with division of work,
progress monitoring and incentive mechanisms in coordinated
manner through a robust digital platform. In last two years,
undoubtedly, IIC has emerged as a very sustainable and scalable
model for promoting innovation within HEIs and the efforts of

Bhoomithrasena Club: Climate change poses an emerging
challenge to sustainability of social and economic development,
livelihoods, and environmental management across the globe.
The rise in Green House Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere causes
rise in temperature which in turn leads to unpredictable weather
including flash floods and drought, and rise in sea level. So far as
India is considered, the country is highly vulnerable to climate
change because of high physical exposure to climate related
disasters (65% is drought prone, 12% is flood prone, 8%
susceptible to cyclones) and also the India‟ economy and
population depends on climate sensitive sectors like agriculture,
forests, tourism and fisheries. The Kerala State Action Plan on
Climate Change developed by the Department of Environment

negative consequences of climate change and thus reduce risk
associated with it. It also envisaged climate change strategies
