With rolling parklands, formal gardens and bike paths meandering along the Maribyrnong River, Footscray offers plenty of opportunities to get some fresh air.
Footscray Park, beside Victoria University on Ballarat Road, is one of the largest and most intact examples of an historic Edwardian garden in Australia. The garden features duck ponds, sculpted gardens, playground, free barbeque and picnic areas, and a grassy hill perfect for rolling down.
Newells Paddock Wetland Reserve provides a watery oasis for dozens of native bird and frog species, and sits alongside a wooded recreation reserve. It is accessible via walking and bike paths and is an important inner city conversation park.
Fishing is a popular past time along the river. Cast your reel from the bank or set yourself up at one of the jettys.
Footscray has gained a reputation for its thriving arts scene and large community of emerging, innovative artists.
You can get in on the action by crawling the six contemporary art galleries and public art installations, and spotting hidden street art and iconic large scale street murals.
For a more interactive experience, try your hand at blacksmithing at the Waterside Metal Art studio; get bendy with the Women’s Circus; and fire your kids’ imagination at the literary centre, 100 Story Building.
Catch an unforgettable performance by the internationally renowned Snuff Puppets and visit Footscray’s home of arts, Footscray Community Arts Centre, for exhibitions, theatre, workshops and performances.
Live music is increasing in prominence in the Footscray arts scene. The Reverence Hotel is a renowned Melbourne rock venue with a weekly schedule of gigs. For more intimate gigs check out the Dancing Dog Cafe and Littlefoot bar.
