Dilatation & extraction

(D&E)

Saline infusion

Most common method during 9-14 weeks of pregnancy.

The cervix is examined to evaluate if it is open or not.

If the cervix is closed, dilators will be inserted to open the cervix to allow the surgical instruments to pass through. A speculum will be placed to

keep the cervix open.

The use of curette- to scrape the

uterus lining.

The tissue removed during the

procedure will be sent off to the

pathology lab for testing.

The embryo or fetus is removed by suction

using manual syringe.

•A method of abortion performed during the first trim

ester of pregnancy, in which the contents of the uteru

s are withdrawn through narrow tube. Also called suc

tion curettage, vacuum curettage.

Done under LA.

Combination of suction curettage & manual

evacuation.

Ultrasound may be used as a guidance.

Performed in more than 20/52 of pregnancy.

A needle is inserted through the mother’s abdomen.

A solution of concentrated salt (20% hypertonic

saline) is injected into amniotic fluids)

The fetus breathes in & swallow the solution & dies

within 1-2 hours from salt poisoning, dehydration,

hemorrhage of the brain

& organ failure.
