Selecting Robots for Use in Drug

discovery and Testing

10

ROBOT?

11

DEFINITION:

"A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks"

Robot Institute of America, 1979

12

Benefits of using Robots in Drug Discovery and Testing

•Faster, more consistent and more cost-effective•High degree of repeatability• Every parameter inthe process can be automatically monitored, recorded andverified•Thorough documentation is possible

13

Types of Robots

There are three types of industrial robots most commonly usedin drug discovery and testing: (1) Cartesian (2) SCARA(selective compliance articulated robot arm) (3) Articulated.

14

Cartesian Robots

15

Chief advantage of Cartesian robots• Low in cost•Often incorporated into automation subsystems ormachines dedicated to a single purpose, such as assay testing

Disadvantage•although their restricted range of motion limits their usage.

16

SCARA Robots

•Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm•The unique design of SCARAs gives them a high degree of rigidity•moves very fast and withprecise repeatability•SCARAs excel at high-speedpick-and-place and other material-handling tasks.

17

Articulated Robots

18

•vertically rotating “forearm”and two vertically rotating “wrist” joints, let themperform many of the same types of movements as a human•forearm and wristpick up an object no matter how it is oriented offthe horizontal plane

Preparation of Chemical Substances

1) Largest use of Robotics and Automated Technology for bench chemist

2) Robotics provide more advanced equipment for parallel synthetic applications(synthesize up to 8 large samples ,product scale between 100 mg and 20 g)

3) Sample weighing to 0.0001 g accuracy

(1)Sample synthesis robot

23

Preparation of Chemical Substances

• Multi-channel automated equipment allows for rapid purification (mg to gm scale)

• Purification of 10’s to 1000’s of compounds could not be possible

Saves timeReduces costReduces waste streamHigher purity compoundsAllows chemist to multi-task

Purification

parallel purification robot24

Preparation of Chemical Substances

•Addresses the need for Quality Control and Substance Identification •Equipment allows for:

Sample submissionData acquisitionData processing

Allows chemist to obtain accurate results and uncompromising quality

Purification

25

•Preparation of multiple daughter plates•Register bar-coded vials•Generate registration spreadsheets

Preparation of Chemical Substances

Ability to Rapidly perform tediousRepetitive taskConsistently accurate

26

Automated synthesis, along with high throughput purification, have significantly impacted the drug discovery process by improving purity, yield and reproducibility.

From synthesis to purification, robotics and automated techniques play a key role in the synthesis of new chemical entities.

More compounds, less time = Cost effective
