TWIN-ENGINE HELICOPTER OPERATIONS

AV8 Helicopters Ltd 2

WHY A TWIN?

• Direct routings in urban areas: saves time• Can do Commercial Air Transport at night• Can fly IFR (cloud/low visibility) subject to temperature

and pilot qualification/training

• Operates to smaller landing sites than single-engine helicopters

• Can be used for over-water CAT flights

PROS AND CONS OF COMMON LIGHT TWIN HELICOPTERS

• Agusta 109: sleek, fast, up to 7 pax seats

• EC 135: state of art, quiet, high capital cost, not widely available, but lower DOC than some

• MD 902 Explorer: ‘NOTAR’ high capital costs, history of technical and support difficulties

• Bell 427: unusually for Bell, has not been a commercial success

• AS355 Twin Squirrel F1/F2/N: easy availability predictable DOC, good cabin configurations
