Project StudieS
TransiT sTaTionsTrucTures
When the Mile-High City took on a $500 million renovation of its historic downtown Union Station, roofing the massive train hall and its transit waiting stations was
the most visible and dynamic undertaking. The public transportation platform opened to rail commuting in 1881 and currently acts as a hub for city travelers and commuters with Amtrak train service, three urban light rail trains and citywide bus service.
The renovation team’s engineers and designers incorporated fabric architecture into the redevelopment project to create a functional and aesthetically unique solution. Tensile and fabric structure designer, manufacturer, and installer Structurflex, Kansas City, Mo., was selected to design and deliver a vast membrane roof for the train hall structure and canopies for waiting and drop-off areas within the station. In addition to Structurflex’s team, architects from SOM, engineers, steel fabricators, contractors, and steel erectors all worked together on the project. Eight unique tensile fabric structures were created for the station, which included roofing for commuter rail, Amtrak, light rail and bus terminal waiting stations. The station is an impressively large complex, and the fabric roofs were spread out over 1.35 million square feet of mixed-use development and civic space.
The project team chose Sheerfill II for the massive train hall roof, and Sheerfill V for canopies above the light rail waiting stations. Both Sheerfill products are polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coated fiberglass fabrics produced by Saint Gobain of Paris, France. Single layer ETFE was used for the Amtrak waiting station canopies. The versatility and durability of PTFE made it an easy choice. Useful for industry applications ranging from electrical insulation and computer components to machinery lubrication and textile coatings, it adds stability and life to several different substrates. Its
performance and UV stability.” Dreiling notes that Structurflex’s experience working with PTFE coated fiberglass fabric was also a key factor. “We’ve found it to be the most reliable and well-produced product on the market,” Dreiling says. “It was a natural choice for the Denver Union Station project.”
Other ambitious fabric structures have relied on PTFE coated fabric, as well, including Minneapolis, Minnesota’s former Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, which used more than 20-acres of PTFE coated fabric for its double-sided textile roof. The

modern Denver International Airport covered its main terminal roof with PTFE coated fabric, as well.
Stretching 182 feet wide, 522 feet long, and weighing 720 tons, the Denver Union Station main train hall canopy is on par with some of the largest fabric roofing projects in the country. It covers 93,678 square feet of space and rises and impressive 66 feet above the train platform. Installed onto a tubular steel structure comprised of 11 3D trusses, the roof covers the length of more than 1 ½ football fields. It was designed to
hydrophobic qualities and excellent safety rating make it an especially attractive choice for application to industrial roofing fabrics like Sheerfill.
The decision to use PTFE coated fiberglass fabric was an easy one, according to Bart Dreiling, president of Structurflex’s North and South American operations, and was made during the planning of the project. “It was agreed upon by the design team, as well as Structurflex, that PTFE fiberglass was the ideal material for the project,” he says. “It offers superior fire resistance, excellent long term structural
