Determining Density
Remember:Density is the amount of mass in a certain unit of volume
Mass is the amount of matter in a substance. A balance is used to measure mass. Mass is measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg).
6 Determining Density.notebook January 08, 2013
• volume is a measurement of the amount of space occupied by a substance
• volume is measured in millilitres (mL) or litres (L) for liquids and in cm3 for solids
• volume of liquids can be measured in a graduated cylinder or measuring cup while the volume of a gas can be measured by measuring the volume of the container that holds it
• volume of an irregularly shaped object can be found by measuring the volume of the water that spills out of an overflow can • displacement is the amount of space that an object takes up when placed in a fluid

Calculating Density
• density can be calculated and expressed as a number
• density is either measured in g/mL or g/cm3
• the density of a substance can be calculated using its mass-to-volume ratio
• this ratio (equation) can be represented by a triangle
A piece of metal has a mass of 8.1 g and a volume of 3.0 cm3. What is the density of the metal?
What type of metal is this? (p. 312)
