POLLUTIONPOLLUTION

Oil spills

Run-off

Dumping

Oil Spills-Not on purpose- Shipping oil -Crash, get a hole- Kills numerous wildlife

Dumping-On purpose -Happens when factories dump toxic waste- Lakes, rivers used as trash bins

Runoff-Kind of on purpose- Fertilizers from farms get washed-Washed away by rain- Water turns brown

•Lack of oxygen in lakes

•Health problems

•Death of wildlife

•500-1000 deaths a day

Causes of land pollutionCauses of land pollution

Land pollution is mostly caused by wastes being dumped onto

land. The garbage and wastes can come from:

-building and construction, factory wastes, garbage from home (cartons and plastics).

-Cities with more people and factories usually have more garbage polluting the land.

Land pollution does many harmful effects to the world such as:

-Killing the wildlife by destroying their homes- damaging nature by throwing away waste and destroying their homes and plants so they have nothing to eat

Effects of land pollutionEffects of land pollution

Dictionary definition:The addition of harmful chemicals to the atmosphere. The most serious air pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels, especially in internal-combustion engines. Contamination of air by smoke and harmful gases, mainly oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen.

Our easy definition:DIRTY AIR and POLLUTED AIR!

What is air pollution? What is air pollution?

- Coal burning for vehicles, power plants etc.

- Global Warming & Climate Changes

- Ozone hole

- Greenhouse effect (Similar to global warming)

- Diseases such as lung cancer, skin cancer etc.

- Extinction due to sudden change in habitats

- Smoke

- Natural Reasons- Volcanic eruptions, forest fires etc

EFFECTSEFFECTS

AIR POLLUTION = KILLING YOURSELF!

The Greenhouse EffectThe Greenhouse Effect

BUT!! If the Greenhouse Effect is too strong, the earth could;

•Dry out•Climate Changes•Floods•Weather conditions like hurricanes.

In Antarctica, there is a big hole in the ozone layer. The heat gets in, and the ice melts!!! Now, this is Global warming…

•Warming-up of certain gases in the atmosphere•The Greenhouse Effect traps the sun’s heat•It is called the “Greenhouse Effect” because it has the same effect as a greenhouse

- Earth’s temperature rises

- Started 200 years ago

- Greenhouse effect

- Ozone hole- sources

- Climate changes- acid rain

- Big changes;

Global WarmingGlobal Warming

Ozone Layer

-Protects living creatures

- Protects the surface of Earth

- Absorbs 96% of the sun’s UV light

Carrying the action...Carrying the action...

We were putting up posters to reduce the amount of paper towels used. This will save trees, and we hope that many people will follow this!

To help, you can:

- Use major transportation

- Try to avoid the use of cars (Walk, ride a bike, carpool)

- Save energy by turning electric devices off when unnecessary

- To Smoking Adults: Try not to smoke! It is bad for everything!

- Recycle- It saves energy!

Note: Pollution’s causes are mostly made by humans. This is how our responsibility shapes the future. In the past, certain advances have made life easier for people, but present human neglect of the environment has made the Earth look like the way it appears now.

ConclusionConclusion
