and a sightline all the way through the house, each step encounters yet another thoughtful detail or distinctive design characteristic in this one-of-a-kind home. Open, spacious rooms with soaring an-gular ceilings and walls of windows contribute to the almost Zen-like calm of this special place. Every aspect of this exceptional proper-ty easily complements gracious enter-taining or the demands of everyday liv-ing. The relationship between interior and exterior is both calming and rejuvenat-ing. Mindful consideration of the home’s placement on the lot resulted in the harmonious blending with the sur-rounding land. Restful landscaping fea-tures drought-tolerant plants, native grasses and trees interspersed with pur-poseful positioning of smooth and or-ganic surfaces of rock and brick; every element clearly placed with intention, promoting beauty and serenity.

g he evolution of a boy from West Los Angeles who entertained himself building forts and tunnels from scrap wood to the innovative Master Builder he is today seems logical, considering his uncle is a famous architect and his father and grandfather are accom-

plished designer/builders. But it becomes apparent that Doug’s myriad travels and life experiences empowered him to not only embrace his natural talents, but to do so with an infectious passion and a unique perspective. After completing his degree in business at the University of California Santa Cruz, Doug embarked on the first of what would become many, enlightening trips. Visiting Japan, he was awed by the beauty of their culture and the depth of integrity that is embraced in their history of art and architecture. “Pictures of these places cannot compare to the magnificence of actually experiencing them first-hand. It was a moving experience that contributed to and expanded my belief in unlimited possibilities,” remarks Doug. In between projects for his clients, Doug procured properties in and around Carmel, developing, designing and remodeling them - crea-tions that enabled him to complete a thought and see it evolve into something measurable, tangible…something that can be called a home. While this proved exceptionally fulfilling, the desire to see and learn more resurfaced.

W oug is a man who relishes life and strives to maintain a sense of balance and harmony. And that means squeezing in some surf-ing every now and then. Indonesia called to Doug and he responded, embarking on a journey that would take him through

South East Asia-Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand-then back to Japan, revealing rich and diverse cultures. His thirst not yet satisfied, Doug returned to Europe, exploring the ancient architecture of the Romans and the renaissance period and more. Upon arriving back on the central coast of California, he was inspired and anxious to tap the creative juices his travels aroused. Doug repeatedly uses words like scale, proportion, essence, texture, transparency, inspiration, possibilities, creative outlet, learn-ing, passion, experience, fun and love. Doug Mack is a man who speaks these words and then transforms them into the reality of the vi-sion. According to a long-time friend, “There are no shortcuts in Doug’s work, only a relentless drive in pursuit of the vision; the harmo-nious interplay between form and function.”

W oug relates with his own gentle enthusiasm how he looks forward to the next project and the opportunity to create a home to fulfill a client’s desire and vision; to be a part of the entire process again. With more than twenty-five major projects under his

belt, Doug can barely contain his excitement about the next one. For him, the possibilities are endless .

V armel Valley is an unincorporated

area stretching east from Carmel,

with the Carmel Valley Village about a

twelve mile drive. The pastoral beauty of

the Valley, once almost exclusively farm-

ing and ranching, is a stunning alternative

to the coastal scenery. While agriculture

and some ranches still dot the landscape,

the Valley has become a sought-after place

to live. While hiking, horseback riding,

tennis and golf can be enjoyed by locals

and visitor alike, wine tasting rooms and

restaurants in the Village are a delight!

Generally, you have more "room to roam"

in the Carmel Valley, with many homes

situated on one-acre parcels. As with other

areas of the Monterey Peninsula, there is

also a variety of styles and price-ranges.

For a visitor, there are accommodations

available, but they are somewhat limited as

is all development in the Carmel Valley.

\ t is known as the Monterey Peninsula, but encompasses many diverse surroundings – myriad choices of a place to call home. The story of the Monterey Peninsula is best told by understanding the variety alternatives available in this

abundantly beautiful part of the world.

g he Monterey Peninsula is the rugged Carmel south coast known as Big Sur; it is the stately elegance of Pebble Beach, the crown jewel of golfdom; it is the pastoral serenity of Carmel Valley; it is Carmel-by-the-Sea’s quaint charm; and it’s historic

Monterey and Pacific Grove, “the last Hometown”.

j e are uniquely qualified to assist you with properties on the Monterey Peninsula and would welcome the opportunity.

The possibilities available to you range from Castles to Cottages…and Places in between.
