…and a new batch of juniors are starting to embark on their own journeys.

Based on this year’s application season, here are four of the not-so-helpful practices we’d like to see applicants leave behind.

…Not to mention that more schools are now taking student interest into account. Like Santa, they’re keeping track of what you’ve been up to, and if they’ve seen you.

2.Applying to Schools You’ve “Heard” About

Students include colleges on their lists because a friend of a friend said it was a “great school” all the time. Suggestions are a great starting point…

…But it’s up to you to take the next step: researching whether or not that suggestion is, in fact, a great fit for you.

3.Missing Deadlines & Requirements

This is not your high school health class. College admissions officers aren’t going to be sympathetic to students who miss important dates.

We advise all students to keep a live document (in GoogleDocs, Excel, etc.) to keep track of admissions deadlines and requirements.

Even if you have the perfect topic, it should still take you some time to flesh out the details, order the narrative, and finesse the language.
