STEWARDSHIP
Ezekiel 18:25-28|Phil. 2:11|Matt. 21:28-32 In today’s second reading, St. Paul offers a formula for
living like true followers of Jesus. Paul writes, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in
humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests,
but to the interests of others.” Paul is inviting us to follow Christ’s example of humility and
selfless love. Doing this is a challenge for most of us. Yet, that is one of the secrets to being a good
steward and living as Christ wants us to live.

Ask Father James:
"Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of
you" (Matthew 21:31). Who were the "sinners and prostitutes" that Jesus meant?
Prostitutes as used here does not mean hooker! The Mishnah specifically describes sinners and prostitutes as those who
did not eat food in ritual purity or to anyone who lived sinfully rather than religiously. At the time of Jesus, the people
who were considered to be “Sinners” and "prostitutes" were mostly tax collectors, and people who practiced syncretism.
Syncretism is the process by which the practices and beliefs of one religion are incorporated into another religion. For
example, the mixing of the cult of Yahweh and temple rituals with pagan practices. paradigmatically for anyone who
seemed to lack a moral compass. These people, like the tax collectors (who plied their trade in pagan currencies), in the
first century had earned a negative reputation for their lack of ethics. Their profession was saturated with unscrupulous
people who overtaxed others for personal gain. Tax collectors were considered among the worst that their society
produced. Their actions were considered a deviation from the covenant between Yahweh and the house of David which
ensured Yahweh’s blessings upon those faithful to the covenant and devotion to Yahweh.
During the time of Jesus, the Jews believed they were children of the double covenant (Abraham and David) and they
saw non Jews as accursed sinners and prostitutes, who even though they lived in Israel were practising Syncretism. So
they treated these people as ‘sinners’ and ‘outcasts.’ For example, the tax collectors were Jewish people but they worked
for the Romans and handled Roman currency (denarius) instead of Jewish Temple currency, the Shekel. The Elders and
the Pharisees championed this Politics of Holiness’ which according to them was derived from the ‘holiness code’ of the
Old Testament, understood in terms of separation from everything unclean, including separation from people whom they
considered sinners and prostitutes. That is, from those who did not eat food in ritual purity or to anyone who lived
sinfully rather than religiously.
When Jesus appeared on the scene, he associated with many who were considered sinners and prostitutes; like the tax
collectors like Matthew, Levi, (Matthew 9:10; Mark 2:15) or Zacchaeus and many unnamed others, even though there
was incompatibility between his ministry and their profession. Jesus embraced people without expecting repentance
while merely hoping that repentance might result from their unconditional inclusion. Jesus' approach was Inclusion
Before Repentance. Jesus fully included people first in the hopes that repentance would follow.
Jesus seemed to challenge the social and religious value of his time by choosing paths to restoration for society’s outcasts
- those whose status was the result of sinful “conduct” (prostitution, tax-collection, etc.) and especially Gentiles, lepers,
the poor, and women. Thus, he bluntly told them; "Truly I tell you, these tax collectors and these prostitutes are going
into the kingdom of God ahead of you" (Matthew 21:31).
