Word of the Week
Tranquillity
Meaning: The quality or state of
being tranquil; calm.
Typical use: “The hotel is a haven
of peace and tranquillity. ”
SHS Life It was great to see so many prospective students and parents/carers at our annual
Open Evening last night. It is always a pleasure to meet with new parents/carers and
students, I hope that everyone got a real sense of what it is like at our ‘outstanding’
school.
We believe that school life is about developing the whole person and I hope that you
were able to see this for yourselves. Throughout the year students are able to take
part in a range of experiences from the Duke of Edinburgh Award, to work in the arts,
music and sport to name a few, along with many opportunities for trips and visits
locally and to other countries.
A huge range of subjects were showcased during the evening through a wide range of activities. The Modern Foreign Languages Department created a wonderful café and our musicians played throughout the school. There was also a sports extravaganza with activities such as basketball, trampolining, cricket nets, table tennis and fitness circuits. This is only a fraction of some of the great activities that both staff and students showcased to our visitors.
I would like to congratulate our new Head Boy Billy Moule 11SM and Head Girl Jolie
Hackett 11JP for opening the evening as their first official event in their new roles. I
also wish to thank our students from all year groups who gave up their time to
showcase some of the activities that regularly happen at our school, as well as subject
helpers and Student Ambassadors who acted as guides. Well over 200 students
provided support in a wide variety of ways and were a credit to themselves and the
school. Particular praise goes to our current Year 7 Ambassadors who provided
valuable advice to Year 6 students letting them know how well they had settled in after
only three weeks with us. Notably, I would like to recognise Joseph Bullingham 7Wb
and Liam McNichol 7Bd for their wonderful enthusiasm to help raise £44 for Macmillan
Cancer Support from the sale of the freshly made pizzas.
From us all at SHS have a great weekend.

Gabby is a Record-Breaking Karate Kid
Gabby Evans 7VR has won her 2nd Dan in Sankukai
style Karate and in doing so has become the youngest
ever person in the world. She achieved her 1st Dan
back in 2015 and has now set her sights on reaching
the 3rd Dan next year. Gabby brought her new 2nd
Dan belt into school to show classmates which reads
Gabby in Japanese and English. We wish Gabby
continued success in her sport and look forward to
seeing her hit the headlines in the future.
We have had more good
news this week as we
received the plans for the
new English, mathematics
and science blocks which will
begin in October.
The plans and drawings will
be displayed in school for
students and visitors to the
school to view in more details
during Open Evenings and
Parents’ Evenings. Building
work will start in October and
is expected to be completed
in May 2018.
This is an artists’ impression
of how the building will look.

Gowland Brothers in World Championships
Gregory Gowland 8ZW and Benjamin Gowland 7Cb competed in a The Unity World Games on Sunday 17 September. This is one of the biggest sport martial arts events with hundreds of competitors. The brothers took part in five events: Advanced Creative Weapons, Advanced Extreme Weapons, Advanced Weapons Battle, Team Kata and Kumite (fighting). It was their first time in the advanced category and they handled themselves well, although they were unplaced. They were able to win in the fighting category, with Gregory claiming the World Championship title and Benjamin obtained 2nd place.
They were representing the club Urbantrix Academy. The boys have also recently received sponsorship from Xplosive Weapons.
They train with local martial arts club ‘Young Gloves’ and will be taking their black belt gradings in November. Fellow club member Luke Stanley 8LC took part in a Welsh martial arts competition on the 10 September and received two bronze medals for Kata.
As part of European Languages
Week 2017 students can enjoy food
from across the world all week in
the restaurant. This always proves
popular with SHS students with
many trying this type of food for
the very first time.
