Letter From the DirectorDear Colleagues:
During the last year, we have been building the
foundation for the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute
to combine the expertise and resources of MedStar
Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Washington
Hospital Center, MedStar Montgomery Medical Center,
and MedStar National Rehabilitation Network.
Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only
comprehensive cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute
(NCI) in Washington, D.C., will serve as the institute’s research engine. This
institute, which now extends to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and
MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus in the Baltimore region, further allows
us to work closely with our referring physician partners in the community.
The goal of the institute is to provide your patients with a unified, superior
standard of care by fostering greater coordination and collaboration within our
system and throughout our community. We will positively impact patient care
by sharing our collective resources and expertise to develop targeted
treatment plans that address every patient’s needs. We believe that treatments
based on transformative research and the very latest evidence is essential to
achieving excellence in cancer care. Accordingly, this institute allows us to
expand and improve our ability to make the benefits of our research available
to your patients, while always maintaining a focus on superior, compassionate,
patient-centered care.
I hope you find this directory useful as an easy resource to identify the right
physician who may provide specialty cancer care to your patients. I am very
proud of the remarkable physicians and scientists affiliated with our institute.

Our specialists, many of whom are nationally recognized for their expertise in
numerous specific cancer types and disciplines, cover the full continuum of
care—from screening, prevention, research, diagnosis, and treatment at each
of our network hospitals, to a personalized cancer rehabilitation program—
ensuring patients throughout the region have access to the latest therapies
available, closer to where they live and work. I encourage you to use this
directory for referrals, consultations, and collaborations. We have a robust
clinical trials program, and urge you to take an active role in referring your
patients for these critically important studies. Please be on the lookout for
updates regarding clinical trials that may offer your patients unique treatment
options. Most importantly, we want to successfully transition your patients back
into your care at the conclusion of treatment and keep you informed of their
progress every step of the way.
The institute is the largest provider of cancer care in the area. We are joining
forces to conquer cancer and look forward to working with you to make
this happen.
With best regards,
Louis M. Weiner, MD Director, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Director, MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute Chair, Department of Oncology, Georgetown University School of Medicine
