2012 Matrix vs. 2012 Dodge Caliber SXT
Top Matrix Advantages Over Caliber SXT
2012 is an interesting model year for Dodge Caliber because the car was scheduled to end production on November 23, 2011. Since this is the close-out year, expect to find some very attractive discounting and financing offers to keep shoppers interested. For 2013, Dodge expects to replace Caliber with a Fiat-derived model.
So you should be ready to explain to buyers looking at Dodge Caliber why Matrix is such a better, more solid alternative. This Edge will lay out a host of feature and value reasons why Matrix should be at the top of a shopper’s list.
Look inside for detailed info about this summary, important safety information and disclaimers.
More functional steering wheel Matrix comes with a tilt and telescoping steering column. In addition, Matrix includes audio controls on the steering wheel—not found on most Caliber grades.
SAFETY AND SECURITY In typical Toyota thoroughness, Matrix has a depth of safety and security features not matched by Caliber.
Daytime running lights Matrix comes with daytime running lights (DRL), a feature Caliber doesn’t offer standard.
Front seat-mounted airbags Matrix has front seat-mounted side airbags as standard equipment. Caliber charges extra for that type of airbag.
Three rear headrests Matrix includes three adjustable headrests for rear seat passengers. Caliber has only two rear headrests, and they don’t adjust for comfort.
TOYOTA VALUE Matrix is a great partner for helping an owner squeeze more value out of each automotive dollar spent. But that’s natural because it’s a Toyota.
Lower predicted total cost of ownership According to IntelliChoice, Matrix L is predicted to be more than $4,000 less expensive to own over five years than Caliber SXT.
SmartChoice award winner for 2011 IntelliChoice awarded 2011 Matrix its SmartChoice award in two categories. Caliber didn’t win any SmartChoice awards.
POWERTRAIN ADVANTAGES Matrix gives shoppers a raft of ways to customize the vehicle to their needs. And because the Matrix is a Toyota, it’s all done without compromising efficiency.
Available all-wheel drive Two-wheel or all-wheel drive: The choice is yours on Matrix S. Caliber doesn’t offer an all-wheel- drive option.
Standard or automatic transmission Do you enjoy shifting? Or do you enjoy letting the car do it for you? Either way, any grade Matrix will work for you. Most Caliber grades offer no transmission choice.
Efficient operation Whether by fuel economy, curb weight or drag coefficient, Matrix is simply more efficient than Caliber. That’s one of the values of Toyota engineering.
COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE Matrix has more ways for the driver to find a comfortable position, so a Matrix driver may be more refreshed at journey’s end compared with a Caliber driver.
More head room Matrix has more front and rear head room than Caliber. Plus, Matrix has more rear leg room, too.

For 2012, Dodge has abandoned the “lifestyle” grades and returned to letter designations. In other words, the base Caliber has gone from Express to SE; the volume grade has ditched Mainstreet for SXT. Aside from renaming and restructuring the grades from five to three, Caliber for 2012 is functionally a carryover.
Here are some of the major features of the Caliber range.

 POWERTRAIN ADVANTAGES
Standard or automatic transmission
Matrix buyers can choose between standard and automatic transmissions for each grade. On Caliber, only the top-level SXT Plus offers a choice. Plus, Caliber’s automatic is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which some drivers don’t care for.

available all-wheel drive
Both Matrix and Caliber come standard with a space-efficient front-wheel-drive powertrain. But only Matrix offers a full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system that automatically distributes power between the front and rear wheels according to available traction.

Efficient operation
By several measurements, Matrix L is simply more efficient at what it does compared with Caliber SXT, resulting in better EPA ratings. Contributing to this advantage are Matrix’s lower curb weight and lower drag coefficient.

Front seat-mounted airbags
Both Matrix and Caliber come with a variety of airbags as standard. In fact, on 2012 Matrix, airbags are never an optional item. Caliber doesn’t see it that way, because getting front seat-mounted side airbags is an extra cost, even on the top of the line grade.

Matrix and Caliber are sold as five-seat hatchbacks, but only Matrix includes three headrests for rear passengers. As an added feature on Matrix, the rear headrests are adjustable; on Caliber they’re fixed.

Surprising versatility The Matrix interior offers spacious seating for five as well as unexpected cargo-
carrying capability. With up to 94 cu.-ft. of interior volume and generous rear leg
room, passengers have plenty of room to spread out and relax. Hauling cargo is no
problem either, with nearly 20 cu.-ft. of cargo space† behind the second row seats,
with an easy clean, non-slip cargo floor and tie-down hooks to keep items secure. To
triple the amount of cargo room, the second row seatbacks fold down to provide over
60 cu.-ft. of cargo space†. And the fold-flat front passenger seat on S and XRS trims
creates even more room for those extra-long, bulky items.
outstanding fuel efficiency Matrix covers a lot of ground with each gallon of gas, with an EPA estimated 26/32/28
MPG rating (city/hwy/combined) for manual transmission models and 25/31/28 MPG for
the automatic transmission model powered by a 1.8-liter engine*.
Typical Toyota value Owners can count on solid all-around value from their Matrix. Its low cost to own and
operate earned the IntelliChoice “SmartChoice for Ownership Costs” award in its class1.
And all the while, owners can be assured they made good choice, as Matrix was named
as “Best Resale Value” in its class2.Intriguing list of equipment choices
Matrix offers a lengthy list of choices, beginning with three trims: Matrix, S and XRS.
The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine on Matrix trims provides 132 horsepower, while the
2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine on S and XRS trims delivers 158 horsepower. And the
choices continue. All-Wheel Drive comes with the S AWD. All-independent sport
suspension is part of XRS. Navigation systems are available on S and XRS and XM
Satellite Radio† with NavTraffic®† is available on all models. JBL® premium audio with
Bluetooth®† technology is available on S and XRS – the choices go on and on.
Comprehensive safety features Drivers and passengers will feel secure with the long list of standard safety features
found on Matrix. All models include Toyota’s Star Safety System™: Vehicle Stability
Control†, Traction Control with OFF switch, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-
force Distribution and Brake Assist†. Also standard are driver and front passenger
dual-stage advanced airbags† with front passenger Occupant Classification System†,
driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags†, front and rear side curtain
