“at project Icecube, it’s absolutely critical to have a good power supply. The ice must be as pure and clear as possible. If the power to the ice top sensor system were to fail, we would risk the tank water freezing without being controlled, resulting in bubbles and impurities, and very much reducing the quality of ice and quality of information that we can see with our detectors. we chose acopian power supplies to power our pumping and degassing systems because of their reputation for reliability. The people at Acopian met all of our highly demanding specifications and, despite very little time until our window to ship to the Pole, they met our schedule. we were 100% satisfied.“

From the EditorArthur Kelley
Hello everyone,
This is my final column as Edi-tor of the PELS Newsletter and completes my three-year term of service. It’s been a pleasure working with everyone on the PELS Meetings, Operations and Administrative Committees, and
I especially want to again thank the IEEE staff who produce this professional publication for us.
Beginning with the next issue, Dr. Babak Fahimi will be the Editor. I wish him the best of success in this position and I know he will carry on our tradi-tion of excellence.
On a sad note, news of the loss to us of Prof. Alfio Consoli arrived just as this issue was going to press. The next issue will include a memorial to his life and career.
As always, the PELS Newsletter solicits short ar-ticles of technical interest, reports from the field of PELS related activities and announcements of up-coming meetings. Please contact our Associate Tech-nical Editors for more information.

Special Issue on Transportation Electrification and Vehicle Systems, 2013
Scheduled Publication Time: July 2013
There is an evolving paradigm shift in transportation industry toward electrified vehicles, which are more efficient, more reliable, safer, and smarter. In addition, they have higher performance and are more environmentally friendly than conventional vehicles. Transportation electrification technologies are applied to both propulsion and non-propulsion systems. Electrified vehicles include more electric vehicles (MEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and electric vehicles (EVs). Electrification level, defined as the percentage of the vehicle’s electric power to its total power, varies from 5-20% in MEVs to 100% in EVs. Enabling technologies include power electronics, electric motor drives, electric machines, electro-mechanical systems, energy storage systems, robust controllers, and embedded electronics. This Special Issue is focused on transportation electrification and its enabling technologies and related vehicle and grid systems, components, and controllers.
Prospective authors are invited to submit original contributions or survey papers for review for publication in this Special Issue. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
Automotive power electronics, electric motor drives, machines, and actuators Electric and hybrid electric powertrains; powertrain components and control Propulsion systems Electronic control units Energy storage systems; battery management systems On-board and off-board chargers, fast chargers, and opportunity chargers Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) interface and grid interface technologies Electric vehicles (EVs) and range-extended EVs Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs); plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) Electrification of heavy-duty and off-road vehicles; electrification of trains and rail vehicles Applications of fuel cells in transportation Electrical systems and components for sea, undersea, air, and space vehicles
All manuscripts must be submitted through Manuscript Central at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tpel-ieee. Submissions must be clearly marked “Special Issue on Transportation Electrification and Vehicle Systems, 2013” on the cover page. When uploading your paper, please indicate, under step 4 – Details & Comments, that it is for the “Special Issue on Transportation Electrification and Vehicle Systems, 2013.” Refer to http://www.pels.org for general information about electronic submission through Manuscript Central. 20 IEEE Power Electronics Society NEWSLETTER Third Quarter 2012
For Immediate Release
Third International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip Palace Hotel
San Francisco, CA, USA. November 16th to 18th, 2012
http://powersoc2012.org/ The 3rd International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip (PowerSoC2012) will be held at the Palace Hotel San Francisco on November 16-18, 2012, the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) and IEEE Power Electronics Society (IEEE PELS) are jointly sponsoring this workshop. Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Ireland has hosted two predecessor workshops in 2008 and 2010. The workshop will focus on the integration of electrical power converters for multiple applications, and address a broad range of technologies. The complete integration on-die and integration within package are of prime interest. System performance requirements demanded by present day and emerging applications require ever greater granularity in voltage and control, form factor reduction, efficiency, and cost reduction. A major challenge on the path to integration and form factor reduction of dc-dc converters is the difficulty of integrating the energy handling passive components utilizing conventional silicon processes. The focal topics for this workshop are the strategies for addressing circuit and system approaches as well as advanced technologies for the design and manufacture of these passives. Dr. Cian Ó Mathúna, who has been researching and promoting magnetics on silicon technology for more than a decade, presented a perspective on the recent growth of interest in the PwrSoC space “Over the last two years, we are seeing a significant increase in state and commercial investment. A number of market studies have appeared and both the U.S. ARPA-E and the EU Framework 7 program have made significant investment in PwrSoC research partnerships between academia and industry”. The General Chair for the workshop is UC Berkeley Prof. Seth Sanders, one of the pioneers of Power Supply on Chip technology dating back to the mid-1990s. In welcoming the opportunity to host the workshop in San Franscisco, he stated that “this workshop will address the broader context of PwrSoC – as well as addressing the concept of board mounted dc-dc converters that replace linear regulators in terms of size and cost but with much higher efficiency. The workshop will place particular emphasis on the concept of granular power delivery for large system on chip platforms, such as microprocessors, microcontrollers and DSP chips, where multiple independent power rails enhance system performance. PowerSoC ’12 is the only international technical workshop dedicated to advancing these important leading-edge power conversion technologies.” The Third International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip will follow the successful formula from the predecessor workshops with a single track of invited talks and posters. Because of the intense nature of this workshop, attendance will be limited to individuals actively involved with this emerging technology. Please see http://powersoc2012.org/ for more information and registration. About IEEE PELS: The Power Electronics Society is one of the technical societies of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). For over 20 years, PELS has facilitated and guided the development and innovation in power electronics technology. This technology encompasses the effective use of electronic components, the application of circuit theory and design techniques, and the development of analytical tools toward efficient conversion, control and condition of electric power. About PSMA: PSMA is a non-‐profit professional organization with the objective of enhancing the stature and reputation of its members and their products, and improvement of their technological power sources knowledge. Its aim is to educate the entire electronics industry, academia, government, and industry agencies as to the applications and importance of all types of power sources and conversion devices.

Invitation to Speakers for Professional Education Seminars – IEEE PELS
The IEEE Power Electronics Society is pursuing two initiatives in the area of professional education. Applications are sought for potential instructors. Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis.
The first initiative is a database of qualified instructors. Many organized IEEE events have a need for professional education seminars, ranging from major conferences (such as APEC and ECCE) down to section-level events. Also, there may be companies who are looking for qualified instructors for internal training courses. This database will list instructors who have given seminars at major IEEE events and are willing to participate in smaller events. It will not replace any existing calls for participation. PELS will serve only as a clearinghouse for contact information. All further details will be negotiated between the instructor and event organizer.
The second initiative is an online education service. Highly qualified instructors will be asked to offer online versions of their seminars or short courses, both for live participation and for later viewing. Financial considerations will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
If you are interested in participating in either initiative, please fill out the form located at https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEg2cXNMYlM3QlJTYkp1bVFMMHpKR2c6MQ. At this time, instructors must have given their course at a conference sponsored or co-sponsored by PELS within the past two years.
