Application of the integrated rainwater and wastewater system

with public participation in the

context of river restoration & climate change

2012-2013

10.000 m2 of landwith 128 residential unit

public toilet

domestic wastewater, especially grey water, flows directly into river without any treatment process

Rationale

• Deteriorating stream quality, (turbidity up to 59 NTU, phosphate up to 2 mg/l, BOD up to 5.39 mg/l) due to sedimentation, domestic waste as well as cattling activities at the upstream.

• It is suitable for application of bio-eco engineering technology combined with combined wastewater treatment to enhance self purification processes and carrying capacity of ecosystems

OBJECTIVES River restoration• Introduce community based Ecohydrology interventions for setting

up ecosystem services

Development of innovative models and its application as a pilot• To build a Demonstration site (with- site selection criteria and

rationale) on stream restoration using bio-eco engineering technology with expected outcomes.

• Key components of the model that is to be developed: technology, policy measures, capacity building and stakeholder participations.

Sustainability• Public participation, community based

community empowerement

Bio-eco engineering applied water biota interplay as water management tools.

• Availability of the resources• High reduction of BOD and solids (but low reduction of pathogens).• Water biota such as water hyacinth grows rapidly and

is attractive, • Low to moderate capital cost; operating cost can be

offset by revenue.• Potential for local job creation and income generation. • Can be built and maintained with locally available

materials

Lesson learned

• Sustainable development with public participation sounds ideal

• Is it easy?

NO

Problems

• Conflict of interest• Building trust• Culture, Attitude Change• Economically attractive?• Continuity, Sustainability
