Bunnings confirms Alice moveMluleki Moyo

BUNNINGS has confirmed itplans to set up shop in AliceSprings.

The hardware giant says its $23million investment will createmore than 110 jobs in town.

Chief operating officer PeterDavis said in a statement yester-day the company is preparing adevelopment application, to theNT Department of Lands andPlanning and Alice Springs Town

Council, for a Bunnings Ware-house in Alice.

He said: ‘‘Bunnings’ proposedinvestment in the Alice Springsarea will provide great job oppor-tunities for the local community,with more than 110 new positionsavailable in the Bunnings team,representing strong employmentand on-the-job training opportun-ities for local residents and schoolleavers.’’

If approved the proposed ware-house will be located at the corner

of Stuart Highway and PowerStreet, Alice Springs.

Mr Davis said the warehousewill have a total store size of morethan 12,000 square metres consist-ing of a main warehouse, kids’playground, nursery and parkingfor more than 200 cars.

He said: ‘‘The project is estim-ated to create an additional 160jobs during the constructionphase and represents a significantdirect investment in the localarea.’’

Executive officer of CentralAustralia’s Chamber of Com-merce NT, Kay Eade, said: ‘‘Thisnews will be welcomed by thebuilding industry in Alice Springs.

‘‘There have been no majorprojects since the completion ofthe Economic Stimulus Planwhich saw most schools benefitwith a new building.

‘‘This development, once com-pleted, will also provide ongoingjob opportunities for local schoolleavers and hopefully attract in-

terstate workers.

‘‘The threat to Alice Springs willbe to the locally owned businessesthat have invested heavily in thistown.

‘‘Hardware stores, nurseries,plumbing stores and boutiquehome and garden stores, to name afew, will definitely feel the pres-ence of this franchise.

‘‘They will have to worktirelessly to secure customerloyalties before Bunnings opensits doors.’’

Lasseter’s reef becomes a feature filmn From Page 1

‘‘I thought I’d love to make afeature film, and the story ofLasseter’s lost reef to me is amost wonderful Australianstory.

‘‘So this is going to be mainlydramatic recreation in the film,but (producer) Simon Nasht hasgot some idea of putting BobLasseter (Harold’s son) in it aswell.

‘‘What I’m visualising in thismajor feature film... is this scenein Sydney when HaroldLasseter, Bob’s father, walkedinto the Australian WorkersUnion and explained how he hadfound the reef 20 years before,and he just wanted some helpfrom the union so he could goout and find it.

‘‘And suddenly gold fever hit,and all of the people in themeeting decided to put in themoney, and they raised what wasover a million dollars in today’s

money, in the middle of thedepression, to run their ownexpedition.

‘‘They didn’t want the govern-ment to find the reef, theywanted to have the gold. Goldfever is incredible. Gold fever isalways there, it’s never goneaway.’’

He said: ‘‘The advantage withLasseter’s lost reef is that we cankeep searching for it. If someonefinds it, we won’t be able to lookfor it any more.’’

Mr Smith arrived in AliceSprings on Friday, as did BobLasseter , the fi lm’s ac-complished producer SimonNasht and the film crew. Theyspent Saturday filming at lo-cations around Alice Springs,including the Road TransportHall of Fame where the LandRover used by Bob Lasseter onsearch expeditions between 1966and 1978 is on display.

They also filmed at Harold

Lasseter’s grave at the PioneerCemetery, then left on Sundayto retrace Harold’s journeythrough Papunya, Ilbilba,Kintore, Mt Leisler andLasseter’s Cave.

Bob Lasseter will be 87 nextmonth. He was six when hisfather died looking for the gold.

He said: ‘‘I’ve been searchingfor landmarks my father re-corded but I’ve never been ableto get a permit to do any pros-pecting. Once I find these land-marks I would be able, with thehelp of other people, to showwhere that reef is.’’

Dick Smith once helped MrLasseter by hiring a jumbo jet tofly over the region. Mr Smithsaid: ‘‘We got a Miner’s Right,and everyone who was going toshare the reef had to sign aspecial agreement that theyweren’t going to blame me whenthey became incredibly wealthyand it changed their lifestyle.’’
