66Jaanus SammaToilet Posters (2016)Valik pilte kunstnikku teismeeas ümbritsenud raamatutest, mis
olid aluseks tema esimestele erootilistele fantaasiatele.A collection of images from books that surrounded the author during his adolescence and influenced his first erotic fantasies.
67Nanna Debois BuhlBotanizing on the Asphalt (2015)Kuuekümne New Yorgi, Kopenhaageni ja Riia tänavatelt leitud
objekti reproduktsioonid tsüanotüüpias, varases kaamerata fototehnikas. The artist’s book reproduces 60 found objects in an early, camera-less photo technique — cyanotypy. The name of the book is derived from Walter Benjamin who described the urban wanderer as one “who goes botanizing on the asphalt”.
midega.Collection of texts that deals with mediation and its various forms.
69Magma (2013)Londonis toimunud psühhedeeliat käsitleva näituse “Reflections from Damaged Life” kataloog.
A catalogue for “Reflections from Damaged Life”, an exhibition in London on psychedelia.
Marianne Vierø experiments with abstract images and language that create a picture in the head. In this way a discharge takes place and the abstract images are suddenly differently understood — a process that is always fun to see where it may lead to.
71Uus MaterjalNew Material (2014)Tiraažis 111 ilmunud kunstiprojekti/ajakirja esimese numbri, Uue
Materjali keskseks teemaks on uusmaterjalism. Betoonist valatud karbis on erinevatest materjalidest infokandjad, muutes ajakirja lugemise füüsiliseks avastusretkeks. The first issue of the art-project/magazine, New Material was published in a copyrun of 111. Based on the central topic of new materialism, the magazine comes in a concrete box with its contents scattered on carriers made of different materials, making the reading of it a physical exploration.
72Uus Number!New Number! (2016)2016. aasta märtsis tiraažis 222 ilmunud Uus Number! tegeleb
turunduse ja kommunikatsiooniga kunstimaailma kontekstis. In a copyrun of 222, New Number! focuses on marketing and communication in the art world context.

81Will Holder, Alex WatermanAgape (Miguel Abreu Gallery, New York, US; 2007)Raamat, mis on pühendatud
eksperimentaalsele noodikirjale ja selle evolutsioonile muusika ajaloos.A publication dedicated to experimental scores and the evolution of notation in music.
82Will Holder, Alex Waterman Between Thought and Sound (The Kitchen, New York, US; 2008)Kataloog New Yorgi projektiruumis
The Kitchen 2007. aastal toimunud näitusele, mis eksponeeris 31 kaasaegse helilooja noodimuusikat. The catalogue for the exhibition Between Thought and Sound: Graphic Notation in Contemporary Music that featured notation from 31 contemporary composers and took place in 2007 at The Kitchen, NY.
83Will Holder, Alex Waterman, Beatrice GibsonThe Tiger’s Mind (Sternberg Press, Berlin, DE; 2012)
Raamat, mis räägib selle kaasautori, filmikunstnik Beatrice Gibsoni filmi “The Tiger’s Mind” tegemisest, mis sai alguse Cornerlius Cardew samanimelisel käsikirjal põhinevatest kollektiivsetest vestlusharjutustest.A book about the making of Beatrice Gibson’s film The Tiger’s Mind that was based on collective conversational exercises using experimental composer Cornelius Cardew’s score by the same name.
84Will Holder, Alex Waterman Yes, But Is It Edible? (New Documents, Los Angeles, US; 2014)
Typographical scores for Robert Ashley’s “spoken” operas Dust (1998) and Celestial Excursions (2003), by which musicians and non-musicians alike could produce new versions of Ashley’s pieces.
85STAPLES!
asjadele. 2016. aasta oktoobrist 2017. aasta detsembrini vaatab Will Holder tagasi kahekümne aasta jooksul tehtud tööle ja loetud raamatutele ning kirjeldab sadu materiaalseid otsuseid, mis langetatud kindla tes kontekstides. Holder trükib ja köidab trükiseid “STAPLES!” vastavalt nõudmisele ning uh books’i püsitellijatele.
STAPLES! proposes that description is uh way to design, distribute, reproduce, and enable access to things. From October 2016 to December 2017, Will Holder looks back on twenty years of work made/books read, and describes hundreds of material decisions made in response to a specific context of the work of collaborators’ and readers. Holder prints and binds STAPLES! on-demand, besides a list of subscribers who — for support of uh books founding — receive regular updates, and who have sole access to the writing’s development over time.

87Paul GangloffPunk: Periodical Collection (2012)Omaalgatuselikest kirjastamis
praktikatest rääkiv raamat. Teos põimib intervjuusid ja kollaaže, mis sündisid kollektiivsest graafilisest eksperimendist Jan van Eycki Akadeemias Hollandis. A book on self-publishing practices that assembles interviews interspersed with a series of collages made during a collective graphic experiment at the Jan van Eyck Academie.
88Paul GangloffRules of Hypergraphy (Extrapool, NL, 2014)Hüpergraafia on 1950ndatel avan
Hypergraphy is an artistic practice developed by the Lettrist avant-garde in the 1950s that tried to combine alphabetic writing with a graphic, image-based approach. Following the exhibition with the same name conceived by Gangloff, the publication Rules of Hypergraphy provides insight into the concept and gives con-temporary examples of using signs and letters that go beyond writing.
89Paul GangloffType and Characters (2012)Kataloogtrükis, mis kaasnes 2012. aastal toimunud Gangloffi
kujundatud kirjadisaini ajalugu tähistava näitusega “Type and Characters” (“Kiri ja tähemärgid”) Amsterdam Typefoundry fuajees.Publication for Type and Characters, an exhibition in the reception hall of the Typefoundry Amsterdam celebrating the history of type design, curated by Paul Gangloff in September 2012.
90Paul Gangloff & Our Polite SocietyOur Form of Book (Extrapool, NL, 2016)
Neljaosaline raamat, mille iga osa on sündi nud koostöös erineva külalistoimetajaga. Temaatiliselt põhineb raamat El Lissitsky tekstil “Meie raamat” (1927), mis rääkis raamatute tulevikust. Our Form of Book consists of four parts thematically based on a text about the future of books (“Our Book”) written by El Lissitzky in 1927. 1:1:1 Documentaries in Print
Seejärel otsisid nad erinevaid viise, kuidas kombineerida teksti (intervjuude trans kriptsioone) pildimaterjaliga (tööde reproduktsioonidega). Trükiseid kujundades ei pürginud nad täiusliku, “objektiivse” taasesituse ega maksimaalse loetavuse poole, vaid proovisid vormiga tabada intervjueeritud kunstniku või disaineri iseloomu, luues tema visuaalse portree. Pealkiri “1:1:1” viitab lähedasele koostööle kolme osapoole – disainerite, kunstniku ja trükikoja – vahel, aga ka originaali ja reproduktsiooni või teksti ja pildi vahelisele suhtele.1:1:1 is a series of nine publications in which ‘the image corre-sponds with the text, the reproduction with the original and the designer with the client’. The series is now rounded off and brought together in one book. The authors were interested in exploring forms of expression in designs and printed materials. In the case of each publication, they interviewed an artist or designer about his or her chosen theme, method of working and the representation of his or her work. They then looked for ways to combine text (the transcription of the interview) with images (reproductions of the work). They didn’t strive for perfect, ‘object- ive’ representations of the subject’s work, or for maximum legibility of the text, but tried to capture the spirit of the artist or designer, to form a visual portrait. The title 1:1:1 refers to a close collaboration between three parties (the designers, the artist and the printers), but also the relation between original and reproduction, or between text and images.
Richard Niessen (1972, EdamVolendam, Holland) lõpetas Gerrit Rietveldi Akadeemia 1996. aastal. Richard Niessen (1972, Edam-Volendam) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 1996. Ever since he works on a body of work that he calls ‘Typographic Masonry’, which is the almost hermetic craft of forging amalgams of signs, symbols & orna-ments in mostly nonlinear structures; he has created several exhibitions to show this oeuvre as well. Richard works for various clients including artists, exhibition spaces and organizations. In addition, self-initiated projects lead to experiments with presentation forms and collaborations with other designers and artists.
Esther de Vries (1974, Haag, Holland) lõpetas Gerrit Rietveldi Akadeemia 1998. aastal. De Vries õpetab graafilist disaini Haagi kunstiülikoolis KABK.Esther de Vries (1974, The Hague) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 1998. She is specialised in bookdesign in close collaboration with artists, designers and museums like Paul Noble, Tejo Remy, Manon van Kouswijk, Boijmans van Beuningen, Stedelijk Museum, and others. Since 2007 she shares a workspace with Richard Niessen with whom she collaborated on the project 1:1:1 that she published under the name of ‘Uitgeverij Boek’, a small publishing house that started already during her studies on the Rietveld. Esther teaches graphic design at the KABK, Hague.
Taking a Line for
a WalkNina Paim, Emilia Bergmark, Corinne Gisel + Spector Books2016Ülesanded võivad anda juhiseid, kirjeldada harjutusi, püstitada probleeme, seada reegleid, pakkuda välja mängu, algatada protsesse ja visata õhku küsimusi. “Taking a Line for a Walk” juhib tähelepanu millelegi, mida peetakse sageli teisejärguliseks – ülesandele kui pedagoogilisele elemendile ja disainihariduse suusõnalisele artefaktile. Raamat sai alguse samanimelise näitusega rahvusvahelisel Brno graafilise disaini biennaalil 2014. aastal. Assignments can give instructions, describe an exercise, present a problem, set out rules, propose a game, stimulate a process, or simply throw out questions. Taking a Line for a Walk brings attention
to something that is often neglected: the assignment as a pedagogical element and verbal artefact of design education. This book is a compendium of 224 assignments, edited by Nina Paim and coedited by Emilia Bergmark. A reference book for educators, researchers, and students alike, it includes both contemporary and historical examples and offers a space for different lines of design pedagogy to converge and converse. An accompanying essay by Corinne Gisel takes a closer look at the various forms assignments can take and the educational contexts they exist within. Taking a Line for a Walk derived from an exhibition of the same name at the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2014 that was also conceived and realised by Nina, Emilia and Corinne.
Nina Paim on brasiilia graafiline disainer, kes tegutseb Šveitsis. Pärast lühidat majanduse filosoofia tudeerimist asus Paim graafilist disaini õppima Rio de Janeiros ja seejärel Amsterdamis Gerrit Rietveldi Akadeemias. Oma bakalaureuse lõpuprojektina korral das ta Rios suvekooli disaineritele (2012).Nina Paim is a Brazilian graphic designer based in Switzerland. After a detour into economics and philosophy, Nina studied graphic design in Rio de Janeiro, and then at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Her Bachelor project was Escola Aberta, a temporary design school in Rio (Aug 6–11, 2012).
Corinne Gisel is a Swiss designer turned design writer and researcher. Since graduating from the G. Rietveld Academie (NL) in 2012 she’s worked in editorial and visual identity design for various clients, but by now, her practice is moving more towards mediation in a larger sense. She currently lives, works and pursues a graduate degree in Cultural Publishing Studies in Zurich.
Emilia Bergmark is a Swedish visual artist living and working in Malmö and Copen-hagen. She combined studies in art and graphic design at the G. Rietveld Academie, spent a year studying at, and running, the alternative education initiative ‘School of the Damned’ in London, and is now finishing her master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Knock! Knock! Books: Notes, Memories and Fictional Accounts of the Published Works (Lugemik, EE, 2016)
“Notes, Memories and Fictional Accounts…” koondab endasse seitse lugu olematutest raamatutest. Luues paralleele reaalse aja ja kultuurilooga, ehitavad peatükid ühtse alternatiivse, pooltegeliku keskkonna. Juturaamatu formaadis trükist ehivad neli erinevat ümbriskaant, mis viitavad neljale kirjeldatud fiktiivsele raamatule.Notes, Memories and Fictional Accounts… comprises of seven stories about non-existent books. Creating parallels with actual history and cultural theory, the chapters build a complete and alternative realm. The paperback comes in four different dustjackets that point to four different fictional books introduced in the text.
ConvosDaniel Seemayer (Pub)Amsterdam, NL, 2017
Pub on Daniel Seemayeri initsieeritud interdistsiplinaarne algatus, mille eesmärgiks on luua pinnas struktureeritud kirjastamiseks Sandbergi Instituudis (Gerrit Rietveldi Akadeemia magistriprogramm Amsterdamis). Pub on platvorm, mis soodustab tudengite ja kolmandate osapoolte vahelist koostööd ning distsipliinideüleseid kokkupuutepunkte, leides erinevaid võimalusi selleks just kunstiülikooli magistriprogrammi kontekstis. Pubi esimene raamat “Convos” (“Vestlused”) koosneb intervjuudest erinevate kaasaegsete omaalgatuslike kirjas tamispraktikate taga olevate inimestega. Toimides uurimistööna Pubi käimalükkamise jaoks, puudutab kogumik teemasid nagu kureerimine, autorlus, omand, poliitika, tehnoloogia, kogukonnad, arhiivid, võrgustikud ja ajalugu.Pub is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to structure and establish a publishing practice at the Sandberg Institute (Master’s of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam) founded by Daniel Seemayer. While investigating the possibilities within the context of an artistic master programme, it functions as a hub and platform to identify interdisciplinary connections and accelerate collaborat ions amongst the students and third parties. The book Convos is an enquiry into contemporary issues and tendencies in independent publishing practices conceived as a compilation of dialogues to inform Pub’s practice. In conversation with Delphine Bedel, Tom Clark, Florian Cramer, Mariana Lanari, Silvio Lorusso, Koen Nutters, TXTbooks and Pieter Verbeke the interviews touch upon a broad scope of topics from curation to author-ship, ownership and politics, technology and communities, to archives, networks and history.
Daniel Seemayer (1990) is a German graphic designer, currently based in Basel (CH), who recently graduated from the design department of the Sandberg Institute (Master’s of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, NL). With a strong focus on micro- and macro-typographic systems, editorial work, publishing discourses and the synergy of these elements, his scope of works mostly includes books, posters, identities and other printed matter that underlie a process- driven approach.

Werker 6: Cinema Diary (2013)“Cinema Diary” koosneb dokumentatsioonist 30aastase filmikunstniku Matthijs Diederiksi kaheaastasest
kogemusest poole kohaga töökohal Pathe Arena kinos Amsterdamis (2008–2010). See on esimene osa fotoraamatute sarjast Werker 6, mis peegeldab amatöörfotograafia kaudu tänapäeva noorte tööliste töötingimusi.Cinema Diary presents images and docu-ments of Matthijs Diederiks (30, filmmaker, Amsterdam). It is photographed and collected during his work at cinema Pathé Arena in Amsterdam, his side job from 2008 until 2010. Cinema Diary is the first issue of Werker 6, a collection of photo-books that reflect on the current working conditions of the youth through modes of self-representation and amateur photography.
Werker Materials 1,2,3: On Art Education (2016)Trükises on kolm progressiivsest kunstiharidusest kõnelevat doku
olles elu jooksul kohustatud tagasi maksma summa suurusjärgus 21 000–25 000 €.This publication presents a sequence of three documents on the subject of pro-gressive art education that were gathered in consideration of the recent austerity politics in the Netherlands. In 2014, the Dutch government passed a bill that turned all previous student grants into loans. Graduates from higher education and University will now start their work life as debt citizens with an average due of between 21.000 and 25.000 €. The paradigm of education as a universal human right is thus further defied by this transformation.
Werker ABC: An Illustrated Post-Marxist Reader (2009)Werker ABC on laserprinditud trükisekogumik, mis kõrvutab
märksõnade “noor mees tööl” kaudu erinevatest internetiallikatest leitud pilte poliitiliselt vasakpoolse teooriakirjandusega.Werker ABC is a self-produced publication that relates imagery of ‘young men at work’ assembled from many different sources on Internet with contemporary left-wing theory about labour also derived from Internet.
Werker 2: A Visual History of the Young Worker (2011)Kasutades raamatuid ja muid dokumente 1920ndate aastate
töölisfotograafia liikumise kohta, mille kollektiiv Werker on kogunud antikvariaatidest Hollandis, Belgias, Saksamaal, Šveitsis, Hispaanias ja Ameerikas, konstrueerib see trükis Noore Töölise visuaalse ajaloo. From Werker Collective’s collection of Worker Photographer publications and other documents depicting labour found in second-hand bookstores and antiquaries from Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and USA, a visual History of Labour is articulated, centered around the figure of the Young Worker.
Werker 7: The Language of Revolution (2012)Ajalehte Werker 7 peaks eelkõige lugema ja arutama koos teistega,
Millised esteetilised elemendid on osa revolutsiooni läbiviimisest? Kas revolutsiooni keel on universaalne, globaalne? Mis osa mängib selles fotograafia ja massimeedia?

Werker 7 is meant to be read and discussed collectively, displayed as separate pages on a wall at home, at school or on the floor of a public square… What is a revolutionary image? Which aesthetic elements are involved in the making of a revolution? Does revolution have a global language? What role does photography and the mass-media play in all this?
Werker 2: A Spoken History of the Young Worker (2016)2011. aasta väljaandega Werker 2 samal põhimõttel toimiv meedia
kogumik, mis sisaldab näitlemisharjutust Image Act, mille jaoks oli sama materjali esitaval näitusel üles seatud lavapind.Compiled on a similar principle to the 2011 edition of Werker 2, the collection of media also features Image Act, a collective reading for which a stage was set up at the exhibition that showcased the same visual material.
Esimene “Bandage” on pühendatud palderjanile. The Bandage series explores the palliative (from the latin: palliare, “to cloak.”) effects of annunciation and self-publishing. Each bandage is developed with a person that uses a drug or substance regularly to soother the negative side effects of neoliberal economy on their body and/or mind. The first Bandage is dedicated to Valeriana Officinalis.

So Many Dark Gifts
Smoke&Dust/019 + Art Paper EditionsGhent, BE, 2014
“S&D#024/APE#047: So Many Dark Gifts” annab ülevaate kunstnikekollektiivi Smoke & Dust esimese viie aasta tegevusest ning sündmustest, mis toimusid nende projektiruumis 019 selle esimesel tegevusaastal. Trükis kirjastati koos näitusega “A Room Filled With ElectroMagnetic Transmissions & Gestures Of Absence” (BePart Platform for Contemporary Art in Waregem, Belgia). Tegu on esimese osaga seeriast, mis keskendub 019s toimuvatele sündmustele. Sarnane kogumik, “S&D#024/APE#069: Sabotage And Complicity”, järgnes aastal 2016 ning hetkel töötab Smoke & Dust kolmanda väljaande, “Museum Of Moving Practice”, kallal. S&D#024/APE#047: So Many Dark Gifts gives an overview of the first 5 years of the activities of art collective Smoke & Dust and the first year of the events at its project space 019. It was made to accom-pany the exhibition A Room Filled With Electro-Magnetic Transmissions & Gestures Of Absence at Be-Part, Platform for Contemporary Art in Waregem, Belgium. The book was a starting point for a series of publications revolving around the activities in 019: a similar compilation, S&D#024/APE#069: Sabotage And Com - pli city followed in 2016, and Smoke & Dust are currently working on the third edition named Museum Of Moving Practice.019ghent.org
Projektiruum 019 on kunstikekollektiivi Smoke & Dust (algatanud aastal 2008 Valentijn Goethals, Tim Bryon ja Tomas Lootens) üheksateistkümnes projekt, mis asub 450 ruutmeetri suuruses endises
keevitustehases Gentis, Belgias. Tasapisi liikus Smoke & Dust’i fookus muusikalt performance’i ja visuaalse kunsti suunas ning peale 18 albumi üllitamist sai 19. ettevõtmiseks projektiruum: intentsiivne koostöö arhitekt Oliver Goethalsi ja paljude teistega.019 is the nineteenth project of Smoke & Dust, an artist collective founded in 2008 by Valentijn Goethals, Tim Bryon and Tomas Lootens. Centered in a 450-square- meter former welding factory in the Old Docks area of Ghent, Belgium, 019 invites a diverse range of local and international artists, graphic designers, composers, collectives, and other creative practi-tioners to explore the potential inside and around the building. Origi nally function-ing as a non-profit record label and publishing house, Smoke & Dust’s objec - tive was to distribute contemporary music that was made by artists who share a common vision and background. Every release was an intense cooperation, intertwining the artwork (two thirds of S&D are graphic designers) and the music meticulously in order to make a new, coherent and balanced entity. Slowly the focus switched from music to perfor-mance and visual arts. After releasing 18 records, the 19th project became a project space — an intense collaboration with architect Olivier Goethals with the help of many others.
INCREDIBLE EDITION
[The Breakup]Daniel K Y NorregaardLondon, UK, 2016
“INCREDIBLE EDITION [The Breakup]” on uudistekanaleid ja nende eesmärke uuriva projekti tulemus. Analüüsides uudislugude tekstuaalset ja visuaalset retoorikat alternatiivsemast vaatepunktist kui tavapärane ajakirjanduslik praktika, üritab projekt subjektiivsete loominguliste visuaalsete narratiivide abil paljastada uudismeedia tahke, mis on paljale silmale märkamatud või tugevalt tööstuse poolt defineeritud. Raamat on katse astuda välja traditsioonilisest ajakirjanduslikust kriitikatsüklist, aeglustada protsesse ning uurida meile esitatava informatsiooni materiaalsust ja selles leiduvaid erinevaid tõdesid.
INCREDIBLE EDITION [The Breakup] is the outcome of an ongoing research project, looking into news media outlets and their agencies. The project is an exploration of the language of the news, textual as well as visual, from an alter-native perspective than that of a traditio-nal journalistic practice. It is an attempt to expose areas which are not apparent to the naked eye or defined by the industry, by means of subjective, creative, and visual narratives. It is to be considered as a stepping-out of the traditional journalistic cycle of criticism in order to slow things down and essentially explore the materiality of the information and the various truths that lies within.
Daniel Kang Yoon Nørregaard (1986, Seoul, South Korea) is a Danish graphic designer based in London, United Kingdom. In 2012 he graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After working for various studios in Amsterdam and London, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London where he graduated from in 2016. Upon finishing his studies, he and Guillaume Chuard founded studio Ard — a graphic design and art direction studio. Besides running Ard and his current research project, Daniel is also teaching and running various workshops at different institu-tions and universities both in the UK and internationally.

Signature Strengths
Boy Vereecken + La Loge & Sternberg PressBrussels, BE, 2016
Esmakordsel ilmumisel põhjustasid mass toodetud pehmekaanelised juturaamatud kirjastusrevolutsiooni. Kriitikud põlgasid need madalalaubaliseks meelelahutuseks, kuid see ei kahandanud nende populaarsust. Samas tasus ärimudel end vaevu ära: hinnad olid niivõrd madalad, et kasumi toot miseks pidid raamatud müüma uskuma tutes kogustes. Nii kujunes välja üks tööstuslikest normidest, millega müügiedu kasvatada: enamike novellide kaantele lisati pilt provokatiivsest, väheses riietuses naisest. Paljud lugejad langesid võrgutuse ohvriks, kuid õige pea kaotas see korduv ahvatlus oma mõjuvõimu. Samaaegselt kinnitas toidupoodides kanda vastupidine, essentsialistlik suund. Sellest otsekohesest lähenemisest inspireerituna arendasid Terry Bisson ja loovjuht Frank Kozelek 1980ndatel välja novelliseeria “No Frills”.
When first introduced, mass-market paperbacks sparked a publishing revolu-tion. Critics despised them as lowbrow diversions, which did not impact their popularity. But the business model barely worked. Prices were so low, the books needed to sell in incredible numbers to make a profit. An industry norm emerged to pump up sales, whereby most of the novels were wrapped with images of women in provocative settings and states of undress. Many readers were duly provoked to purchase, but this recurring allure eventually lost its sway. Simultaneously, an opposing theme of essentialism was asserting itself in grocery stores. The No Frills brand presented goods in unadorned packaging. It was as if the very intention to sell had been excised from the label’s straightforward design and terse declaration of contents—SALAD DRESSING, FRUIT PRE-SERVES, LAUNDRY DETERGENT. No Frills stripped the cloying appeal of traditional marketing and replaced it with a candid offering of canned beets and corned beef, pure and plain. Inspired by this direct approach, Terry Bisson and art director Frank Kozelek developed the No-Frills book series in the early 1980s. Signature Strengths, conceived and edited by Boy Vereecken, reproduces in full the four books published in the series—Western, Mystery, Science Fiction, and Romance— as well as critical evaluations of the fasci - nating experimental endeavor in genre writing and mass-market publishing.
Boy Vereecken juhib 2009. aastal Brüsselis asutatud sõltumatut graafilise disaini stuudiot. Kirjeldades oma töömetoodikat kui “As Found” (“nagu leitud”), on ta kesken dunud trükistele ja kohaspetsiifilistele installatsioonidele, tuues elujõulise paind likkuse tänapäeva visuaalsete identiteetide tavapärasesse keelde. Suure osa stuudio tegevusest moodustab uurimistöö tellimustega seotud teemade kohta. Vereecken loob visuaalseid identiteete mitmetele institutsioonidele. Boy Vereecken runs an independent, Brussels-based graphic design studio founded in 2009. He is focused on printed matter and site-specific installations, and describes his methodology as “As Found”, bringing a vital flexibility to today’s visual identity language. A greater part of the studio’s activity or practice is put into research surrounding the commissioned topics. Vereecken works on projects (visual identities) for a wide variety of insti-tutions, such as KIOSK (Ghent, BE), La Loge (Brussels, BE), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna, AT). In 2012 he took on doctoral studies at Sint Lucas School of Art Antwerp and the University of Antwerp. He has taught also at Marmara Üniversitesi Istanbul (TR), Università luav di Venezia (IT), Sandberg Institute Amsterdam (NL) and Otis College of Art and Design Los Angeles (US).
Shut Up I’m Counting!
Felix Salut + Spector BooksAmsterdam, NL, 2014 Raamat “Shut Up I’m Counting!” on filmistsenaarium, mis räägib keerulises ja korrapäratus maailmas aset leidvat lugu: Tara ja Ohio on lõksus sümbolitest, süsteemidest ning katkenditest koosnevas reaalsuses, millest nad ei oska välja pääseda. Otsides Xmärki, mis näitaks neile põgenemisteed, ning juhindudes Oraakli saladuslikest mõistatustest, satuvad nad filosoofilisse seiklustekeerisesse. The book ‘Shut Up I’m Counting!’ is a film script. The story is set in a complex and erratic world. Tara and Ohio are trapped in a reality packed with symbols, systems and fragments. They don’t know how to escape from it. They are looking for the sign ‘X’ to show them the WAY OUT. Guided by the Oracle with its mysterious riddles, a turbulent and philosophic adventure story evolves.
Felix Salut (aka Felix Weigand) is a German graphic designer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After studying at the UDK Berlin (2001), Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (2003) and Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem (2005), he worked as a freelance designer for the designer duo Mevis & van Deursen from 2006–2008 while building up his own practice as a graphic designer at the same time. In 2014, he founded Studio Felix Salut with the idea of ‘the studio as laboratory’ — embracing the idea of study and experiment. Stemming from an interest in typo-graphy, works find form not only in graphic design but also in fashion, film and objects. Felix Salut teaches on a regular basis at ENSBA Lyon and Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

113The Picture of Dorian Gray (2007)Gareth Jones’i visioon Oscar Wilde’i klassikust “Dorian Gray portree”
1970ndate Pariisis toimuva kostüümidraamana. Raamatu suur formaat viitab teose esma ilmumisele ajakirjas. Kasutatud kirjatüübid on ITC Benguiat (pealkirjad), Times New Roman Italic (eessõna), Garamond (tekstifont).Gareth Jones has re-imagined The Picture Of Dorian Gray as a costume drama set in 1970s Paris, in a large format edition that returns the book to its origins in a magazine. The typefaces used are: ITC Benguiat, for the cover and headers; Times New Roman Italic for the preface; and Garamond for the main body text.
Pyman’i illustratsioone ja iga tegelase jaoks kasutatud erinevat, raamatu ilmumise ajal (19. sajandi lõpul) kasutusel olnud kirjatüüpi.The yellow cloth-bound book (just like the first UK edition of Dracula) has been typeset with a different typeface for each character, with fonts based on those in use at the time of the book’s original publication (1890s). Illustrations by James Pyman.
115Vanity Fair (2010)Donald Urquhart’i 1930ndate Holly woodi stiilis illustratsioonid keskenduvad peategelane Becky Sharp’ile,
rõhutades tema tugevat karakterit. Peatükkides, kus Sharp’i ei esine, puudub ka illustratsioon. Kasutatud on Eric Gilli kirjatüüpe Perpetua ja Felicity (valitud osalt ka nende naiselike nimetuste järgi).Donald Urquhart’s illustrations in the style of 1930’s Hollywood focus on Becky Sharp, the main character of the novel. Her strong will and persona are emphasised by illustrating only those chapters where Sharp is present. The typefaces used are Perpetua and Felicity (partly chosen for their feminine names), both designed by Eric Gill.
116Some Canterbury Tales (2014)Kunstnik Marvin Gaye Chetwynd’i lemmikjutud Geoffrey Chaucer’i 15. sajandi raamatust “Canterbury

126 Real-Time RealistJung-Lee Type FoundryAmsterdam, NL, 2017
JungLee Type Foundry ehk kirjatüüpe kujundav stuudio tegutseb Hollandis Amsterdamis, olles saanud alguse 2014. aastal Karel Martensi ja tema endise tudengi Jungmyung Lee vahelisest kirjadisainiprojektist nimega Jungka. Kirjakoja kirjatüübid on emotsionaalsed: need juhinduvad tervest inimlikust tunnetespektrist, jättes publikule ruumi nendes laotud tekste tajuda ja tõlgendada. JungLee Type Foundry kirjastatud “RealTime Realist” on emotsionaalne eksperiment kirjadisaini, visuaalkunsti ja kaasaegse kirjutamisega. Seeria esimese raamatu teemadeks on hämmastus, meeltesegadus, üllatus ja aukartus, mida lahkavad kaastööd kutsutud kunstnikelt.Jung-Lee Type Foundry is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, started from Jungka, a collaborative type project between Karel Martens and Jungmyung Lee, in 2014. The foundry’s typefaces are emotional: they use as their guide the whole range of human affect, leaving gaps for the audience to interpret a text in its own terms. Published by Jung-Lee Type Foundry, Real-Time Realist is an experiment in the range of human affect through type design, visual art, and contemporary writing. The first issue explores amazement, dis-traction, surprise and awe with contributions from invited artists distilling the aforementioned emotions. www.junglee.nl
Jungmyung Lee is a freelance graphic/type designer based in the Netherlands whose work explores the range of human affect, the experience of feeling or emotion, in type design with diverse media.

Success and Uncertainty –
Back UpBart de Baets, Sandra KassenaarAmsterdam, NL, 2012
2011. aasta kevadel Kairos Townhouse Gallery kunstnikuresidentuuris viibides töötasid Sandra Kassenaar ja Bart de Baets koos plakatiseeria “Success and Uncertainty” kallal. Plakatite ingliskeelseid versioone eksponeeriti galeriiruumis, moodustades aina kasvava kollektsiooni. Trükis “Success and Uncertainty – Back Up” loob reprodutseeritud töödele ka põhjalikuma konteksti.During an Artist in Residency at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Egypt in the spring of 2011, Sandra Kassenaar and Bart de Baets collaborated on a poster series titled Success and Uncertainty. A month prior to their arrival, the then-president Hosni Mubarak had resigned, and the country was in a state of euphoria — celebrating the dictator’s departure on Tahrir Square. This politically unstable time complicated positioning themselves, being right in the middle of it all. Every day, over a period of three weeks, Bart and Sandra designed and displayed a poster — in Arabic — in a light-box at the entrance of the Townhouse Gallery, which reflected on recent events from the city. An English version of the poster was on display inside the gallery, where the collection grew larger every day. The posters were composed of politically charged discussions, interviews with locals, international comments on the revolution, symbols of the people’s movement, observations of daily life, as well as gossip in Cairo. Soon, the posters caused discussions among the locals which fed the next day’s design. In the spring of 2012, Bart and Sandra organized an exhibition in the Amsterdam based art book shop San Serriffe, where all
posters were again shown in large light-boxes, and Success and Uncertainty — Back Up was launched: a modest publication providing the work with a more elaborate context.
Bart de Baets (1979, Belgia) on Amsterdamis tegutsev graafiline disainer, kes on erinevate sõltumatute publikatsioonide kirjutaja, toimetaja ja kujundaja. Üks käimasolevatest projektidest on fanzine Dark and Stormy, mida ta koostab ja kirjastab koos disainer Rustan Söderlingiga. Omaalgatuslike projektide kõrval on ta teinud koos tööd kunstnike, kunstiinstitutsioonide, kultuurisündmuste, loengusarjade, filmiprogrammide, klubide ja bändidega. Ta on kaastöötaja ajakirjas Girls Like Us, mis on ajakiri “kõigist sugudest naistele”. Bart õpetab graafilist disaini Gerrit Rietveldi Akadeemias Amsterdamis, ülikoolis KABK Haagis ning hetkel ka Karlsruhe disainiülikoolis.Bart de Baets (1797, BE) is a graphic designer based in Amsterdam. Since 2006 he has been working on a variety of self-initiated and commissioned projects. An ongoing project is Dark and Stormy, a fanzine he makes together with Rustan Söderling. Next to this, Bart’s commissioned work include a variety of clients: collaborations with artists, art institutions as The New Institute (Rotterdam), AFK, De Appel, Royal Palace on Dam Square, W139 (all in Amsterdam), cultural events, lecture series, film programs like The Weight of Colour, A New Divide?, music venue Paradiso (Amsterdam), and sleeve design for Australian band Total Control. He is a contributor to Girls Like Us, a magazine for women of all genders. Bart is teaching at the graphic design department of the Gerrit Rietveld academy in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. He currently teaches a seminar at the Hochschüle fur Gestaltung in Karlsruhe.
Sandra Kassenaar (1982, Johannesburg, ZA) is an independent graphic designer and art director, living and working in Amsterdam. She graduated with an MA from the Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem in 2007 and since then has worked with artists, curators, writers and architects, focusing mainly on printed matter. Besides running her studio, Sandra collaborates with the editors Kirsten Algera and Ernst van der Hoeven on making the biannual design and craft magazine MacGuffin, and regularly teaches at the graphic design department of ArtEZ in Arnhem.

See trükis on antud välja osana Elisabeth Klementi ja Laura Pappa kureeritud näitusest “Signaalid perifeeriast” (1. juuli – 13. august 2017) Tallinna Kunstihoones, toimides sisujuhina lugemisnurgale/kirjastamis sektsioonile, mille teostasid Ott Kagovere ja Maria Muuk, kes koostasid lõpliku valiku raamatuid, kavandasid neile riiulid ning panid kokku, tõlkisid, toimetasid ja kujundasid antud trükise. This booklet is published as an accom-panying index for the reading room/publishing section in the exhibition Signals from The Periphery. New Forms of Graphic Design at the Tallinn Art Hall (EE) in July 1–August 13, 2017 curated by Elisabeth Klement and Laura Pappa. The publishing section was realised by Ott Kagovere and Maria Muuk, who compiled the final selection of books, constructed the shelves, and composed, edited, translated and designed the booklet.www.signalsfromtheperiphery.ee
Ott Kagovere (1983) ja Maria Muuk (1994) lõpetasid 2016. aastal Eesti Kunstiakadeemia graafilise disaini osakonna ühise lõpu tööga: nad andsid välja ajalehe, mis koosnes transkribeeritud vestlustest kaastudengite, õppejõudude ja kolleegidega graafilise disaini teemadel. Alates 2016. aasta sügisest organiseerivad nad alternatiivhariduslikku projektiruumi fookusega disainiteoorial, mille programm koosneb lugemisgruppidest, loengutest ja filmiõhtutest, tegut sedes samaaegselt vabakutseliste graafiliste disaineritena.Ott Kagovere (1983, EE) and Maria Muuk (1994, EE) graduated from the graphic design department of the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2016 with a common final work — a self-published newspaper consisting of transcribed discussions with costudents, teachers and colleagues about the role of contemporary graphic design. Since fall 2016 they are organizing a self-educational project space focused on design theory, with a programme consisting of reading groups, lectures and movie nights, while practicing also as freelance graphic designers.
