Our Human Body

-Your human body systems work together to function for the whole (organism).

2

A system is a whole made up of many parts.

Organization in the human body:

1) Cell

2) Tissue

3) Organ

4) System

5) Organism

3

I. Nervous System

• Functions to direct (control) your body’s actions via electrical impulse.

• Receives & responds to information.

• Stores & processes information.

• Maintains homeostasis.

Organs: Brain, Spinal Cord

4

II. Endocrine System

• Functions to control and regulate your body’s actions by secreting chemicals (hormones).

Organs: See image to right-->

5

III. Digestive System• Functions to break

down the food you eat to a small enough size for cell entry.

• Breakdown is mechanical & chemical.

• Also functions to eliminate waste.

Organs: Mouth, esophagus, intestines, stomach … See figure to right

6

IV. Immune System

• Functions to combat infection and fight off disease.

Organs: See image to right-->

7

V. Circulatory System• Also known as the

cardiovascular system.

• Functions to transport materials to & from all cells of your body.

Organs: Heart, arteries, veins, aorta.

8

VI. Respiratory System

• Functions to bring oxygen in to your body and remove carbon dioxide waste.

Organs: Lungs, trachea, mouth, bronchi

9

VII. Skin System • Functions to cover and

protect your body.• Regulates body

temperature.• Senses environment.• Removes waste.• Produces vitamin D.• aka: Integumentary

system

Organs: skin, hair, sweat glands,nails.

10

VIII. Skeletal System

• Functions to shape & support your body.

• Protects organs.• Produces blood cells.• Stores minerals (Ca2+) &

other needed materials.

Organs: skull, femur, rib cage, sternum and all other bones.

11

IX. Muscular System

• Functions to provide movement.

Organs: biceps, triceps, deltoids…

12

X. Reproductive System• Functions to

allow humans to mix their genetics through sexual reproduction, thus making unique offspring

13

XI. Excretory System

• Functions to filter and eliminate liquid waste.

• Also removes excess water.

QuickTime™ and a decompressor

are needed to see this picture.

Organs: see image to right -->

14

How does your stomach work with other systems?

• Smooth muscles contract to move food along your digestive tract. [peristalsis]

• Blood vessels deliver oxygen to stomach cells. (circulatory)

• Strong acids kill off harmful pathogens, thus improving immunity.

15

How does your liver work with multiple systems?

• Makes bile for digestion of fats.

• Breaks down medicines to support immunity.

• Filters blood from circulation.

16

How do your bones work with other systems?

• Bone marrow produces blood cells (circulatory).

• Bones attach to skeletal muscle for movement.

• Bones protect vital organs, i.e. brain (Nervous).
