And live this day as if thy last;

Improve thy talent with due care;

For the great day thyself prepare.

Think how all-seeing God thy ways

And all thy secret thoughts surveys.

And with the angels bear thy part,

Who all night long unwearied sing

High praise to the eternal king.

FIRST READING

R: The first Reading for the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter one of Isaiah beginning at verse one.

Isaiah 1:1,10-20 CEV

God tells his people: Become clean

Isaiah 1:1,10-20

I am Isaiah, the son of Amoz. And this is the message that I was given about Judah and Jerusalem when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were the kings of Judah:

Isaiah 1:1,10-20

10You are no better than the leaders and people of Sodom and Gomorrah! So listen to the LORD God:

11"Your sacrifices mean nothing to me. I am sick of your offerings of rams and choice cattle; I don't like the blood of bulls or lambs or goats.

Isaiah 1:1,10-20

12"Who asked you to bring all this when you come to worship me? Stay out of my temple! 13Your sacrifices are worthless, and incense is disgusting.

Isaiah 1:1,10-20

I can't stand the evil you do on your New Moon Festivals or on your Sabbaths and other times of worship. 14I hate your New Moon Festivals and all others as well. They are a heavy burden I am tired of carrying.

Isaiah 1:1,10-20

15"No matter how much you pray, I won't listen. You are too violent. 16Wash yourselves clean! I am disgusted with your filthy deeds. Stop doing wrong 17and learn to live right. See that justice is done. Defend widows and orphans and help those in need.”

Isaiah 1:1,10-20

18I, the LORD, invite you to come and talk it over. Your sins are scarlet red, but they will be whiter than snow or wool. 19If you willingly obey me, the best crops in the land will be yours. 20But if you turn against me, your enemies will kill you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 50:1-8,22,23 CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 501From east to west, the powerful

LORD God has been calling together everyone on earth.

C: 2God shines brightly from Zion, the most beautiful city.

Psalm 50:1-8,22,23 CEV

R: 3Our God approaches, but not

silently; a flaming fire comes first, and a storm surrounds him.

C: 4God comes to judge his people. He shouts to the heavens and to the earth,

R: 5"Call my followers together! They offered me a sacrifice, and we made an agreement.”

Psalm 50:1-8,22,23 CEV

 C: 6The heavens announce, "God

is the judge, and he is always honest."

R: 7My people, I am God! Israel, I am your God.

Listen to my charges against you.

Psalm 50:1-8,22,23 CEV

 C: 8Although you offer sacrifices

and always bring gifts, 22You have ignored me!

So pay close attention or I will tear you apart, and no one can help you.

Psalm 50:1-8,22,23 CEV

R: 23The sacrifice that honours me is

a thankful heart. Obey me, and I, your God, will show

my power to save.C: Glory to the Father, and the

Son, and the Holy SpiritAs it was in the beginning is now

and will be for ever Amen.

SECOND READING

R: The second reading is written in Chapter eleven of Hebrews beginning at verse one.

 Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 CEV

Living by faith in God's promise

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

Faith makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see.

2It was their faith that made our ancestors pleasing to God.

3Because of our faith, we know that the world was made at God's command. We also know that what can be seen was made out of what cannot be seen.

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

8Abraham had faith and obeyed God. He was told to go to the land that

God had said would be his, and he left for a country he had never seen. 9Because Abraham had faith, he lived as a stranger in the promised land. He lived there in a tent, and so did Isaac and Jacob, who were later given the same promise.

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

10Abraham did this, because he was waiting for the eternal city that God had planned and built.

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

11Even when Sarah was too old to have children, she had faith that God would do what he had promised, and she had a son. 12Her husband Abraham was almost dead, but he became the ancestor of many people. In fact, there are as many of them as there are stars in the sky or grains of sand along the beach.

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

13Every one of those people died. But they still had faith, even though they had not received what they had been promised. They were glad just to see these things from far away, and they agreed that they were only strangers and foreigners on this earth.

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

14When people talk this way, it is clear that they are looking for a place to call their own. 15If they had been talking about the land where they had once lived, they could have gone back at any time.

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16

16But they were looking forward to a better home in heaven. That's why God wasn't ashamed for them to call him their God. He even built a city for them.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSE

C: ♫ Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

C: Jesus said: 'Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.‘

(Luke 12:32 NRSV)

Hallelujah.

gospel

M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter twelve of the Gospel according to St Luke beginning at verse thirty two.

C: ♫ Glory be to you, O Lord.

Luke 12:32-40 CEV

Be ready for Christ's return.

Luke 12:32-40

32My little group of disciples, don't be afraid! Your Father wants to give you the kingdom. 33Sell what you have and give the money to the poor.

Luke 12:32-40

Make yourselves moneybags that never wear out. Make sure your treasure is safe in heaven, where thieves cannot steal it and moths cannot destroy it. 34Your heart will always be where your treasure is.

Luke 12:32-40

35Be ready and keep your lamps burning 36just like those servants who wait up for their master to return from a wedding feast. As soon as he comes and knocks, they open the door for him. 37Servants are fortunate if their master finds them awake and ready when he comes!

Luke 12:32-40

I promise you that he will get ready and have his servants sit down so he can serve them. 38Those servants are really fortunate if their master finds them ready, even though he comes late at night or early in the morning.

Luke 12:32-40

39You would surely not let a thief break into your home, if you knew when the thief was coming. 40So always be ready! You don't know when the Son of Man will come.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: ♫ Praise be to you, O Christ.

Prayer after the gospel

M:Thank you, Lord Jesus, for promising us the kingdom of God.

Help us to be ready and waiting for your return.

Der Glaub ist ein lebendge Kraft

Petrus Herbert c1530-71

Tr Catherine Winkworth (1858), alt.

67

Faith is a living power from heaven

1. Faith is a living power from heaven

that grasps the promise God has given,

a trust that can't be overthrown,

fixed heartily on Christ alone.

68

Faith is a living power from heaven

4. Faith feels the Spirit's warming breath

in love and hope that conquer death;

faith brings a lasting joy in God

that even trusts his heavy rod.

69

Faith is a living power from heaven

5. We thank you, then, O God of heaven,

that you this faith to us have given

in Jesus Christ, your Son, who is

our only source of happiness.

70

Faith is a living power from heaven

6. Now through his goodness lead us all

towards our true faith's final goal,

the happiness no foes destroy,

eternal love and light and joy.

Hymn

We sing as our free will offering is received.

Just as I am

V.1,3,5,6

LH 335 CAL293

Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871), alt.

Just as I am

1. Just as I am, without one plea

But that Your blood was shed for me,

And that You bid me come to You,

O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am

3. Just as I am, though tossed about

With many a conflict, many a doubt,

Fightings and fears within, without,

O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am

5. Just as I am, You will receive,

Will welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;

Because Your promise I believe,

O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am

6. Just as I am - Your love unknown

Has broken every barrier down -

Now to be Yours, yes, Yours alone,

O Lamb of God, I come.
