Baptism. It isone of thosegrand momentsin our faith jour-ney; a moment
when we mostfully connect tothe church, thebody of Christ,
the community of faith. It is a momentspecial beyond words. It is sacred.
Somewhere between the Dead Seaand the Sea of Galilee, Jesus stepped intothe Jordan River with John the Baptistand was baptized (Mark 1:9-11). It was hiscommissioning momentthe beginningof his ministry and work; the start of hisjourney to the cross. So in our baptism
we are re-enacting his baptism. It is ourcommissioning moment. We are affirmingour faith in Christ and proclaiming himto be the Son of the living God, our Lordand Savior. And we are affirming ourcommitment to a Christ-like ministry andservice. According to Paul, our baptism is
also the dramatic portrayal of Jesus burialand resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). It is thatdefining moment when we die with Christand emerge a renewed beingsymboli-cally and powerfully.
This Sunday, Palm Sunday, 18Pastors Class participants will join ourchurch-wide palm processional fromShannon Miller Park to the Rotunda, intothe sanctuary, and on to the waters oftheir baptism. They will affirm their con-fession of Christ, their eagerness to mostfully connect with the family of faith, andtheir commitment to a life of ministry andservice. It is their sacred moment.
Please join them for this grand sacra-ment and encourage them in their faithjourney. In the process, take time to reflect
on your own baptism. Recall it frommemory or the stories of your family at themoment of your christening. Rememberand celebrate.
Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comesin the name of the Lord (John 12:13).
